  1. According to the OP via PM this unit is sold.
  2. We have used the film cans with a bag for CITO. IMO it is a waste as hardly anyone CITO's. When I check on caches we have that have been out for years the CITO film can is usually still there despite the area accumulating garbage. Instead you could make the containers and leave them as swag. I have one of these caches dubbed by some as "large nanos". It has a magnet inside and is attached to some metal stairs about 9'-10' up.
  3. Welcome to the fun! I agree. Try to wait until you have a fair number of finds to get the feel of what geocaching is, types of hides and the general nuances of geocaching. Many people suggest 100 finds. I had 70+ with ours and I did have a small problem with the cache. It was a simple remedy which I may have known about if I would have found a few more. Once you are ready to hide one I'm sure a local cacher would help you with the coordinates. By that time you will probably be aware of the cachers that live close by.
  4. I have used the adhesive Lexel for this with great results. It has worked for every application I have tried so far including neodymium to plexi-glass.
  5. First off, here is the manual for it. I would save it to your computer. I have a 600 so I think it is similar to yours. You can adjust the screens to your preference. Once you have it set to go to a waypoint the red arrow will point to the direction of the waypoint (cache) you are heading toward. Note that you have to be moving for this to point in the proper direction. Otherwise you can carry a real compass to orient the compass screen with the proper direction or use the icons to the side of the compass screen. Do you see the sun icon or the moon icon? Just turn the unit so they match up. See page 23 in the manual. (30/119 in the PDF) To customize page from compass screen... MENU > CUSTOMIZE PAGE > (Highlight box you want to customize) press ENTER > Scroll down to "Dist. to Next". I usually adjust the other box to "accuracy" so I can tell how accurate my readings are. I know this is confusing at first. We were just like you when we started. Please let us know when you get it figured out. Welcome to the fun.
  6. We have Darth and C3PO for our TomTom as well as a bunch of others. They get extremely annoying after the novelty wears off.
  7. I rarely label the outside but I always put the website address and GC ID inside the cache. I have had one non-cacher stumble upon our cache and contact me. If it didn't have that information inside than I doubt they would have figured it out because they hadn't heard of geocaching.
  8. According to the guidelines they should be marked on the outside but in reality this rarely happens. From guidelines:
  9. Those are great points, especially the point in red. What is more refreshing it it lends to the discussion of this thread. I'm not sure the cache outside the business matters much. You still couldn't mention the name of the business as it is [sometimes] permitted in event listings.
  10. How about the police station? The dispacher could have a bunch of papers with information on them. The cachers would have to go in and ask about it. It would educate law enforcement on caching, plus they could glean information on how the average cacher looks and acts. It's an idea. I like the idea of coming to X location and asking for someone like. George. George cache. Then they could get an envelope or something. Maybe I'll have a treasure map inside. We do have caches at the local police station, fire station, and historical society. It has worked like references for a job when trying to work with another public entity. They have vouched that cachers have not been a problem and only good experiences have been had. That's an idea. I'll have to shake it around in my head a bit to see if it could be made more exciting. I don't like the idea of using a business for the idea but it certainly is a place where someone would be most of the time. Maybe I can get a roaming homeless guy to help out. That would be something.
  11. Go ahead. Explain it smarty pants. So what, I'm a liar? I am much more aware of this guideline because of this idea but it in no way has any bearing on this thread. I know this isn't going to change. (I'm not even saying I want it to.) It was just a point for discussion. I have had that idea for years but never posted a thread before. I'm not trying to change anything to suit a cache idea. I'm just noting an inconsistency. Sometimes these forums are just too much.
  12. Why would it be poor manners? Geocaching events are meant to be open to everyone, and not everyone can afford to eat in a restaurant every time there's an event. We have a number of attendees at our monthly event who only get a drink, or nothing at all. We hold our events in restaurants that are willing to accommodate that. If a restaurant wasn't willing to accommodate that, we wouldn't have the event there. As I mentioned before it would be rude unless previous arrangements were made with the management. I am sure this has happened although I have never noticed it mentioned on event cache pages. Since it isn't mentioned one should not assume that this arrangement has been made. This thread is not in response to anything although I do admit that I am really trying to do a cache that requires interaction with a live person and this is harder to do without using a business. Even if it was permitted I don't think I could find a suitable business. I think a library is my best bet. Maybe city hall... I've had this idea for years and have yet to make it come to fruition.
  13. I'm not worried about it. On the flipside shouldn't it be ok that a cache is mentioned in/near a business and not suggest that the business be patronized? While an event may not specifically mention to patronize a business it would be poor manners not to. Although not said it seems implied. What would a restaurant owner do if we held an event there and no one patronized them?
  14. Oh yeah, vietital, McKeeFamily2, and any other newer cachers. Being a regular reader of these forums will greatly enhance your effectiveness geocachng. I know of a cache that others had spent hours and hours on. I was able to find it immediately because of things I had learned on the forums. You have to skip all of my posts for sneaky hides though!
  15. I'll try to think of some caches that are more wheelchair friendly. -Engine No. 9 in town can be done in your chair. The final is over grass but I'm sure you'll do fine. -Spooky Tree -Impossible Mission Force in Norton are both over grass and should be ok. (The IMF cache is trickier though so you might wait a while.) -Listen to the Sound of Water wouldn't be too bad. -Those Iced Tea Snaffles, -Above Bikini Bottom, -Two Gallons? (If you take an easier path in. If you can go in the woods you should be ok) -Rogues' Hollow - History & Legends v1.0. The final for that is on a trail but it is hard packed and well defined. I'll try to think of more later. You might find this site interesting if you haven't already seen it. Welcome to the fun. Email me anytime for help. I'd even head out with you if you'd like. I'm just a few minutes away.
  16. Enjoy it while it lasts! My kids used to be like that. I've learned if you drive close enough sometimes you can stay in the car. That sounds bad, doesn't it?
  17. It means that steering wheel fell off the satellite, and that since it won't stay in its own lane it tends to create problems for other drivers, and eventually, geosync satellites whose steering wheels fall off all wind up in basically the same parking lot. Did you mean?
  18. You sound like me! When we first attended events I logged them with a note because an event isn't really a geocache and while we don't collect numbers I do like them to be accurate. Of course then your record of attended events is incorrect. You can't win!
  19. Personalities. What can you do? Some people take those FTF seriously and will bend and break rules to get it. That coupled with the deletion of a log is enough to really irritate them. I don't care about FTF as its just another find to me. I'm not a number counter so that's no biggie either. But I will say that I have been irritated when a log is deleted. When it comes right down to it, what can you do? (I admit I briefly thought of deleting every one of their logs from all of our caches but that certainly wouldn't make the situation any better and it would be just as childish as their deletion of my log. ) There a cliques/personalities everywhere in life. Personality A disliked B and then A will pick on anything they can that B says/does. It all goes back to -What can you do? I suppose venting is nice. You can hash it out in the local forums. Unless it is so flagrant that GS bans this member(s) then it's a tough situation. Kill 'em with kindness maybe? BTW- while I have never searched for any of your hides I hear they are legendary. I try to have trickier hides but I'd love to find your secret book of cache hiding ideas.
