  1. Had this happen this week. I live in SD and am in Tampa for work. Thought I take a bit of time and go caching. Came across one that I thought was just inside a park. But it was back in the woods a couple hundred feet. So I started in, came across a little clearing that had some beer bottles with sticks in them...weird but ok. Then I looked into the woods and saw something hanging from a tree that looked like a small gatorade cooler with a candle burnring on it and something hanging off it. No idea what it was and even though I was really curious, this little 'ping' kept going on in my head to turn around and go back to the car. So I did. If I had been in SD, I would have taken a look at it. (concealed weapons permit and a Glock 10mm gives a little confidence boost).
  2. I bought a 60CX and the wife flipped I spent 300 bucks on it. So I bought her a $300 Coach purse and surprised her with it when she came home from work. Now the topic never comes up. Worked for me!
  3. Mine have been kind of hit and miss lately. I think it has to do with the newest PQ's being run first. In other words I haven't modified mine for awhile (4 weeks?) and that means they are being bumped to the bottom of the queue and day ends before they are run. The reason I am guessing that is that my PQ's 'seemed' to be running later and later in the evening, and then not at all. So maybe one that is set to run Friday used to run at like 11:45p, now it's even later and gets bumped to Saturday. It's not set to run Saturday so I never get it. Who knows. I have a 'copy' of each with no days checked. I run those in the morning of the days I think I am going caching by checking the box for that day. They *usually* show up in like 15 minutes.
  4. Log in every time from a Treo as well. No big deal.
  5. I haven't found a reason why TOPO map would be worthwhile. Maybe because of where I live - ie no mountains to hike up an down. What do you guys 'use' them for? To me, street maps are the way to go.
  6. On all the time. According to my Garmin manual, having WAAS on and not getting a 'WAAS signal' can degrade accuracy, so the unit automatically chooses the most accurate method. No reason to turn it off.
  7. one on my neck while caching, one on my shirt and one on my arm while camping. None dug in, just crawling around. hate those things! creep me out. Found a couple on the dogs too, the Frontline does a great job at killing them/keeping them away.
  8. What's the plan on hiding it? ie what location do you have in mind?
  9. Wow. just wow. Makes ya feel like watching the auction and emailing the winner to also buy a 'Green Energy shield' to ward off evil spirits and maybe a 'Silver Shield' which makes your beer colder, and who can forget the 'Magic Black Bean' which makes chicken taste like licorice.
  10. Had the same problem so I went to the Garmin website and just downloaded the whole thing. It was like 48Mb versus the 4 or 5 MB that the update was. No big deal on a broadband connection. After it downloaded the update ran fine.
  11. So how do you find out who a reviewer is for a given area?
  12. plus what happens if the SD card dies? With the DVD, you buy another SD card and reload it. Not sure if you buy the preloaded what will happen.
  13. same 'guts' different case different memory card (but who cares a 2GB card is around 25 bucks) 76 floats 60 has a nice rugged-ish design different control layout Me: I looked at both. I like the 60 series form factor better so went with it.
  14. I have the same thing going on with mine. I believe you are right in that while standing still, the unit has no idea which way you are facing/pointing. I think the 60CSX version with the electronic compass build it may help this as the compass should be able to determine 'North' by standing still. I simply walk a few feet in any direction and it will usually figure out the direction. Plus when I am 15ft from a cache, I start relying less on the GPS and more on 'where would I hide it' logic.
  15. Well considering there is only a small price difference between the two: $117 for MG and $140 for CN if you buy from Garmin's website. Hard to say if Garmin will discontinue it or not. My guess would be they will keep it around to have compatibility with units that don't autoroute. I'm not sure what will happen if you load CN on a non-routing unit. I am guessing the maps work, but obviously don't route and take up more space than an equivalent MG map. I use MG7 and Metrowizzz to get autorouting on my 60cx. Works great. Also, I haven't had any problems with it not finding/searching addresses either.
  16. Thanks SgtSue - exactly was I was after. I swear I looked on that same screen earlier before posting. Thanks!
  17. Hi all - I am looking for a way to filter out the unavailable caches in GSAK prior to sending to Cachemate and to my GPS. I know I can just read the cachemate logs, but it would be nice to not have those even come up when I do a 'nearest search' with the GPS. Any ideas?
  18. Worst thing about Usenet is the spam YOU will receive if you post your real email address. Since it is text only it is very easy for spammers to grab email addresses from it. Flame wars are easy to ignore as are the spam posts. But if you don't reply using a fake email address you could suddenly find you inbox very full.
  19. Anyone out there have the handlebar mount for a Garmin 60-series? I have a 60CX and ride motorcycle caching when the weather permits. I was thinking that having the GPSr mount on the handle bar would be great as right now it just hangs around my neck. I like the idea of being able to look at it without a)taking eyes off the road and b ) taking one hand off the handlebar to hold the GPSr. Are they sturdy? How does the GPS stay in place? GPS won't vibrate out or anything similar? Vibration from the engine cause any issues with the unit itself? (I doubt it, but thought I would ask anyway) Thanks
  20. another vote for the rechargeable batteries. I keep an extra set or two in my bag and usually end up swapping batteries ever other caching trip. Well, that depends on how much I play with the GPSr while sitting at home (60cx and still trying to learn all the stuff it does). I did the cigarette lighter adapter too - basically cigarette lighter to USB plug. But if the weather is nice I ride my motorcycle as you can't beat 45 mpg driving around trying to find caches. I need a handle bar mount for the GPSr though....
  21. best list I have seen in awhile! Especially the last one. I'll be sure to post that in my logs from now on.
  22. Thanks for the info. I just got a couple of 2007 Compass Rose Geocoins and was contemplating what to do with them. I am hesitant to release them into the wild in case they should 'disappear'. Maybe I'll just keep them, and then buy a cheap one to release.
  23. So how do you log it with a cache, but not leave a log entry showing there is a TB at that cache? IE record the mileage, but not have the cache show that there is a TB present?
  24. When I am looking at the 'Map' page on my 60cx, the map itself is a tan color with the roads being different browns. Is there anyway to change that? Not sure if it matters, but I downloaded map tiles from MetroGuide v7. Another interesting thing - when I took a screen shot with XImage, the map color is yellow!
