  1. What if the log date was set to default to the date of the event, but still allow users to change the date? If the date is different than the event, it could put an alert next to the date stating such. User goes to log event. GC.com sees it's an event and pulls the date of the event (not necessarily today's date) into the date field of the log. User changes date, so page displays "This is not the date of the event." in red text, maybe with an icon to click that opens a popup box with more information. If date is changed back to "correct" date, alert goes away.
  2. Maybe NM should be a checkbox with a Found It log as well. That way, it's flagged as "Found" and "Needs Maintenance". If a user clicks the "Needs Maintenance" checkbox, then a second input field opens where the user must input why it needs maintenance. Alternatively, have default answers with checkboxes ("wet log", "full log", "broken container"); the user can then select which ones meet their reasoning.
  3. That's what I get for only reading the first post.
  4. From original post (bolding mine): "new and revolutionary iPhone app"
  5. Doesn't take physics or a computer program to solve. A basic knowledge of how images work in webpages would be the best way to start.
  6. solo, There are many cachers in the St. Louis area. I'd suggest going to the website for SLAGA (St. Louis Area Geocaching Organization): http://www.slaga.org . We have an email group that you would probably be interested in joining. Hope to see you on the trails! yawetag
  7. Personally, I'm glad it's gone. The only TBs remaining in my inventory are personal coins that I'll never drop in a cache, so it's great to finally not see the little * next to it. I can't see why a lot of these little things that are in a constant "I want it / I don't" battle aren't on an "Options" part of a user's account. You want to see the * when you have a TB/coin for 14 days? Great! Turn it on in your settings. You don't want user emails when you do maintenance on a cache? Great! Turn it off in your settings. For that matter, here's a list of all the emails we send out -- select the ones you want and the ones you don't. Honestly, it's not THAT difficult to implement, and it would quell these constant tug-of-wars that occur with every code change.
  8. My father and I use the same team name to place caches. We don't always talk to each other when we do maintenance. I'd like to know when he logs something on our caches, and he likes to know as well. I set up the email account to forward all emails to him, and I read them directly from the account. This way, we keep up with each other's actions on our caches. Yes, we could add the caches to our respective watch list, but that means 2 emails received for every log (one from watch list and one to team's email account).
  9. Welcome to St. Louis! Last year, SLAGA (St. Louis Area Geocachers Association) voted on our first annual Best-Of Awards. You can find the winners here: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...0f-eef0426e9487 In the St. Louis area, most of the caches are in parks. You won't find too many ammo boxes. If you're looking for Power Trails and aren't stuck to staying in the city, there are a few places: * Spanish Lake ( http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...86-25dd76b71dcf ). * Grant's Trail ( http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...0e-02aef6dd5127 ). There are several other places with high density of caches.

    MOGA 2008

Woooo! Weather doesn't look good for Friday on the 10-day forecast, but that can change. Here's to hoping we have a dry MOGA.
  11. This is better discussed at GSAK, but I'll answer it here. Download the "PQPlaced" macro. Run the macro in a database containing only your finds. It will give you a list of PQs to make to get every cache in the database, using "Placed On" dates. I use two sets, one for "Not Found" and one for "Found".
  12. I've heard that it takes 100 "Will Attend" logs. Is that true? If so, is it an automatic change, or does someone change it? If not, what does it take?
  13. Frankly, I don't think anyone said anything because nothing is better than something that doesn't work. For what it's worth (which isn't usually much), I wish it would be recoded to show upcoming events I've stated I'll attend.

    MOGA 2008

I'll be there! I'm heading up Friday to hit the caches from last year. I'm planning on 100 caches easily that weekend.
  15. I labeled my home coords "Not Home". I figure that will deter the criminals.
  16. Your "local" group would be the Kansas City Geocachers. You can find their message board at: http://mogeo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showforum=21 Again, welcome to Geocaching!
  17. It doesn't happen often, but I'm on the same side of the fence as CR. This paragraph (emphasis mine) is probably the best argument for this. By eliminating things that haven't changed, you leave filespace for things that have. Simply use the "last run" date (which is already in the database somewhere -- it shows on the PQ page) and use that as the basis for the PQ.
  18. Yet another way to make this work: if beginning of "homepage" doesn't start with "http://" { add "http://" to the beginning Groundspeak could also add a blurb on that part of the Edit Profile page: "Make sure to include the http:// at the beginning".
  19. Why not both? if "encrypt" selection is on { anything in brackets is not encrypted } if "encrypt" selection is off { anything in brackets is encrypted } I do have to agree that brackets was a bad idea. I don't use them, but I could see where others would.
  20. We just landed! Yeah! I'm in ATL! I know!
  21. Welcome to geocaching! I suggest you visit MoGeo, the website for Missouri Geocachers. There, you will find information on the different geocaching groups in Missouri. yawetag
  22. In and around SLAGA territory in Missouri: (GCK8TF) LADY OF THE WAY (GC96CA) Reflection (GCRRG1) Lake St. Louis Travel Bug Travel Lodge If you decide to take I-270 around St. Louis, let me know. I'll give you some that are on that route. yawetag

    LANGUAGES

And we've heard it from the man himself. Thanks, Jeremy!

    LANGUAGES

Yes, there are sites (babelfish, for example) that will translate a website from one language to another. However, the site is HORRIBLE with translation. You have to decipher what it spits out. Unfortunately, we don't all have one in our head that does it correctly. There is one problem with the GC site, though. All of the links on the left side ("Getting Started," "Hide & Seek a Cache," etc.) are images, not text. Those will not be translated. I speak English and only English, but I think the site really needs to look at international users that don't. If it can't be used on the site (using either IP addresses, country codes, or user settings) directly, then Groundspeak should look at making multiple GC sites (geocaching.es, geocaching.ru, etc.) to cater to those people. The problem is attracting new users that know NOTHING about geocaching. They come to the site and can't read ANYTHING because nothing is translated. Yes (and I mentioned this before), their cache write-ups will be in their language, but if they don't know what they're doing, how can they use that information? I think that if Groundspeak wants to take the venture, then they should start with the "popular" languages (English, Spanish, French) and then work from there. I don't expect them to add Zulu or Cherokee.
  25. Welcome to Geocaching! Without knowing what part of Southern Illinois you're from, I'll gleam from your area code that you may be in the St. Louis area (you could be farther south, such as around SIU). If you're in the St. Louis area, then SLAGA (St. Louis Area Geocachers Association) would be your best place to find fellow cachers. We are VERY active in the area and love new cachers. If you'd like more information, head to SLAGA's website: www.geostl.com
