  1. I'm an aggressive NM/NA cacher, even for caches which I haven't physically visited but are in areas I target to possibly hunt. I mark caches NM and put them on my watch list. I follow-up in a month or 2 and post a NA if nothing has been done. Within a week, a reviewer posts their note and 30 days later the cache is archived. I'm not sure there's been any case where I've posted a NA that it wasn't archived. Often I do so knowing the CO is gone from the game and expect no response from my NM, NA or the reviewers action. If everyone in this thread and many cachers not in this thread took 15 mins a week to do what I described above, a fair amount of known crap would get cleaned up. I know some feel it's the CO's job but when the CO is gone or not attentive, we can make things better. Automation is great but unless there's some magic AI algorithm that will be implemented, we, the caching community, will always be much smarter at it. So stop posting to the forum and start logging NMs (with you following-up in 1 month) and those NAs and lets clean things up. P.S. If you don't like this approach, don't do it, which changes nothing. Just because you don't want to do it, don't criticize those that do any more than you wouldn't want me or others to criticize your lack of DNF, NM and NA contributions.
  2. Its not a beta so you can get it here - http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=10379
  3. In the field, the 'depends on your phone' is still a need. The options for online access by the O7xx is wifi or Bluetooth so your phone will need to be on and have service to do anything 'online' while outside.
  4. Tonight I received a watchlist notification for a note I posted on 9/13 so a 3 day delay. I'm familiar with email headers and the headers show it was sent tonight: Received: from mail04.Groundspeak.com ([63.251.163.229]) by in2g.electric.net with esmtps (TLSv1.2:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:256) (Exim 4.87) (envelope-from <noreply@geocaching.com>) id 1dtLoF-0007xV-3m for david@abcxyz.com; Sat, 16 Sep 2017 15:43:35 -0700 Received: from appint03 (bigip-lb.Groundspeak.pub [172.22.16.1]) by mail04.Groundspeak.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F2B28C0204 for <david@abcxyz.com>; Sat, 16 Sep 2017 15:43:29 -0700 (PDT) Maybe someone unstuck a bad message or restarted a service so I'm just putting this out here in case anyone from Groundspeak is surprised by this.
  5. They do have some level of control and I see below that someone representing GS responded as well. You can read about what Google supports for sites using Adsense... https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/180609?hl=en&ref_topic=23390&visit_id=1-636410014959830033-3453662166&rd=1
  6. You shouldn't need any brightness on unless you are using the device in the dark. In daylight, the screen is bright without any backlight.
  7. Why would I switch back? I have an app that has elegantly provided those features since the start and much more along with excellent developer support . Maybe more folks can get by with the official app vs a year ago but I would see no reason anyone who switched to a more feature rich app would want to switch back.
  8. If you use something to press the button down with your own batteries installed, no option will be displayed for battery type in the GPSr setup menu. See 'Setup > System > AA Battery Type' here. Thanks for correcting my comment. I've run with the plastic piece since I got my Oregon so I haven't looked at the menu since. I used a stiff piece of plastic from the impossible to open packaging we get today. The plastic packaging might have been from the memory card that I got and used with the Oregon at the same time.
  9. Yes, the button is there to detect the rechargeable battery pack. You can put a thin piece of plastic across it and it should then allow the GPS to display the menu option to select the Garmin battery pack and recharge in the unit. Some people recommend charging outside of the unit.
  10. Aha - for all those whining / complaining / posting, the answer has been found... Archive all your caches except 3 and then pay off your friends to give your 3 remaining caches a lot of favorite points. Sit back for 3-33 years and see if they run some other reward that would possibly use the same criteria. Edit: In case it wasn't obvious - I could care less how GS determined the 4000 individuals and I'm just glad there's 4000 new quality places to go discover.
  11. I don't know why anyone would be disappointed. Every person whether they get to place one or find one should be thrilled there's likely a new and interesting place to visit because of this. Cache on!
  12. I have a 700 and Garmin Connect on an iPhone. I've used the Geocaching Live feature and the Sync feature after I complete a hike. When I begin, I press Start on the Hike and when I'm done I press Stop. Within 15 seconds or so of pressing stop, I get a message on my phone that it was synced and I see the data there. When I go home I can look on https://connect.garmin.com and it shows the activity there. From what I see at https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918057-Uploading-from-a-Garmin-device- any Garmin that works with Garmin Connect should work. I wouldn't expect you'd need to do the steps referencing Garmin Express. It appears as long as your info gets to Garmin Connect it can be accessed by Strava. Maybe someone using a 7x0 & Strava can confirm.
  13. At first I didn't think the beta firmware resolved the issue. After following the steps and "ejecting" the GPS after loading the update file, I restarted the phone and applied the software update. GC Live worked via wifi as it did before the update so I turned off wifi on my Oregon 700. Bluetooth still didn't work and I was left on the loading screen with the circle underneath. I tried single GC code loads via GC Live and none worked. I tried multiple Near Me loads and none worked. I know I was connected via bluetooth as a received text message was displayed on the Oregon. I turned off the Oregon and then turned it back on and tried again to load a specific cache via GC Live and it prompted me to connect via bluetooth. It took a second for the Oregon to reconnect after the device was restarted and I was then able to load a specific cache via bluetooth. I then tried to load caches near me via GC Live and it also worked via bluetooth. Won't have much time to see if everything else isn't impacted and still works but this feature appears to now be working again. I know previously loaded caches were still there after the update was applied. If someone tries this and it still doesn't work, try a second power off/on cycle and see if that helps.
  14. The official smartphone app provides the feature to create a new list but like some other features in the official app, doesn't use the API. This restricts 3rd party apps from doing the same unless you go rogue like that Android app everyone likes. They should provide the feature via their API for their partners and problem solved.
  15. Page doesn't display properly on an iPad in chrome or safari. Info is on top of other info - 2nd row of images. Tried to upload am image but failed from iPad with error -200
  16. Not sure what you were searching my logs for vs searching the forums to see all the feedback on standalone NM/NA logs, but since you did... https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC3E707_apu?guid=37b106b0-c0d3-4826-9b79-2d400d266294 was the new DNF + NA as the entire DNF log was the NA log. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC1HAQ3_a-whole-lot-of-tandem?guid=18e268da-a12e-43ff-85ca-cdfe6409f57b is a standalone NA log vs write note + system NA - 2 logs instead of 1. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC15RM6_twice-as-fun-behind-closed-doors?guid=d8a033e2-854e-43a0-a22e-7e3b112acec2 was a followed NM some months later after a DNF vs write note and system NM - 2 logs instead of 1. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC282Q5_changes?guid=4fb0b0ee-62d3-4efc-b612-42c78d76f34a is the one you referenced. I found it. There's already an open NM on it if you check the logs, which I knew when I logged it. You can go ahead and create another note/NM if you want - maybe 2 NMs are better than 1?
  17. Why would I have an opinion about something I now need to use a 3rd party solution? I used to use the web site but now, even for a NM or NA, often launch a 3rd party app to perform the task on my phone/ipad. Just asking for someone to repeat what you've heard dozens/hundreds of times doesn't seem productive. Nothing I could write here hasn't been said by myself and others. Do a search and find the threads with this feedback.
  18. I use a 3rd party app which supports via the official API posting standalone NM and NA logs. Like dprovan, the workflow and result is more streamlined and targeted. My NM and NA logs are distinct from a Found or DNF with different info.
  19. What are you trying to do - anything/everything? Maybe log out, if you can, and log back in. Also try an incognito window which will force you to log in and see if you still get an error.
  20. The website and apps that rely on it are currently unavailable. Once the site is back, I'm sure you'll be able to log in.
  21. Not sure what keeps http://status.geocaching.com/ up to date and if it's managed by a person or automated, but for the current situation, API should be show as an outage. 3rd party apps are unable to connect and receive an error about being Not Authorized or something similar.
  22. The home page and some other pages are returning a 500 error now so I expect they are dealing with a larger issue.
  23. i received a prompt follow-up from Groundspeak when I emailed and asked for any update. I haven't yet received a follow-up from Garmin after I contacted them again last week. Groundspeak's reply: Please know we are aware of the issue and are working with Garmin to get this resolved. Unfortunately, it's taking longer than we anticipated. However, I've passed your feedback onto the appropriate teams.
  24. Is this released to everyone? I tried a couple different browsers and incognito mode as well as with developer tools on and caching disabled and I'm not seeing any icons in the drop down Play menu. I don't see any new links in the Shop menu.
