Coordinate Conversion

Recommended Posts

I am having trouble using the coordinates on Geocaching on map sites such as MapQuest. I know that Geocaching uses the WGS84, but how do I plug in coordinates on a map site - how do I convert them? Help!!

You asked two good questions - plugging in the coordinates and coverting coordinates.

As far as plugging in the coordinates, make sure that you're using the right format. There are degrees minutes seconds (DD MM SS), degress decimal minutes (DD MM.MMM) and degrees decimal (DD.DDDD).

Geocaching.com's coordinates are given in degress minutes decimal (e.g. N 43° 47.599 W 076° 33.592). On the mapquest site, they want either degrees minutes seconds, or degrees decimal.

You can use this site to convert from one form to another. You can also use that site to convert from WGS84 to NAD27, but I don't think you'll need to do that!
