CacheMonkeez Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 How is it that most of the cache descriptions have 3 digits after the decimal point but my cheap GPS has only 2 (in the minutes)? Is it OK to place a cache and provide only 2 digits after the decimal point? Quote
+welch Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 you should double check that your in the correct datum. but, what gps do you have? (magellan 300or310 by chance?) some units just were not set up to got three digits, placing a cache with one is find, but you should point this out in the description so that seekers know the search area will be a bit larger than normal. The first couple finders will probly check the coords, and could include them in their log, exspecially if you request this be done quote:Originally posted by The Hammacks:How is it that most of the cache descriptions have 3 digits after the decimal point but my cheap GPS has only 2 (in the minutes)? +CharlieP Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 If the GPSR supports UTM coordinates that may work better for you than using .00 degrees. The basic unit in UTM is a meter, which is much more precise than the 60 feet precision you get with .00 minutes. There are many conversion programs available to convert from UTM to LL and LL to UTM. dave and jaime Posted September 29, 2002 Posted September 29, 2002 another possibility is that your firmware is not up to date. check the magellan site and upload if necessary. also keep in mind the accuracy of the unit, even though your may get several decimal digits is the display the gps unit accuracy may not be any greater than 3 digits anyway and additional digits may only be guess-tamates.
