How to describe geocaching?

I have a tough enough time accurately describing Geocaching to my friends. How do you describe it to the authorities (to get permission)? I want to know a clear, concise way to explain the game and be ready for their questions. Any suggestions? Is there something to print out to give to a ranger (similar to the 'you accidently found a geocache' that gets put in the buckets). Something like a 1 page summary and FAQ?

Thanks,

Fanaka

We hammered out some things in a forum a long time ago here. Take a peek and see if any of this fits your bill.

I had just returned from a cache hunt and stopped in at a bank to get some forms for an equity line and checking account, and she saw that I stunk like hell and was all filthy and asked where I'd come from. Typical dialogue is...

"I was looking for a geocache," I say.

Puzzlement.

"Well, I use a GPS device and these people post where they've hidden these caches in the woods and..."

"GPS? What's that?"

If they aren't familiar with GPS, it's probably a lost cause, and you won't get the loan cause she now knows you're some weird freak.

Electronic treasure hunt would be simplest. OR just say you were out hiking looking for a hidden treasure.

"You get money out of this hobby?"

!@#$%!!

Have you really found any 'treasure'? I haven't. I think a closer definition is scavenger hunt. It doesn't carry the buccaneer image that 'treasure hunt' does. If we're trying to convince people that this is a wholesome family activity, maybe thats a good thing.

scavenger hunt - A game in which individuals or teams try to locate and bring back miscellaneous items on a list.(The American

Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.)
