Map drawing / Website software?

OK, I admit that I?m addicted to this activity, but that?s another thread.

What I?m thinking of doing now is posting a map on my website that will keep track of where the traveling items in my caches have gone. Nothing too elaborate, certainly not as sophisticated as Jeremy?s maps. Maybe just a map of the U.S. with dots and arrows that I can draw in with Paint Shop Pro or Paint Shop. I suppose I could scan a map and get the jpg that way.

Has anyone done this and can you share your site so I can check it out? Ideas?

Thanks

Here's a link to a map I made.. This is a draft of a map of local bike trails in the area.. I used my MapTech Terrain Navigator for the base map, and exported it , to my desktop, then added pics and text from Adobe Photoshop.. All you need is the basemap of the area you are intersted in. and you may be able to get that from the Terrra server, the USGS map site or any other mapping site..

I use Mapblast and jigsaw the locations together until I have a coherent map - using Powerpoint to combine the graphics. It's a little tedious, but all I have to do is add the next spot and the lines...

See the cache's site, and look for the map in the "photos" section. (BTW - will somebody PLEASE move this thing!?!?)

You also might want to try the U.S. government's Tiger Mapping Service if you intend on putting the map online. It's really very easy to use.

Instructions (and samples) for TMS are here: http://tiger.census.gov/instruct.html

Some maps that I have made w/ TMS showing geocache locations in SE Wisconsin: http://pages.prodigy.net/bjbest/geocaching/wimaps/wimaps.html

I've made an Excel spreadsheet into which I enter all the relevant info and it spits out the parameters TMS needs--let me know if you'd be interested.

MapPoint from Microsoft is the best mapping package I've found to date. It will even publish the maps and directions (if you want them) to a webpage. It's the ONLY map solution, including all the Internet mapping sites, that has my neighborhood represented correctly. I got a free copy at the Microsoft Office XP Launch in Sacramento a few months back. I think if you get it retail it runs around $200.

Mapoint look interesting though probably out of my price range. Then again, I was considering Adobe Illustrator to start manipulating vector graphic maps. I think Illustrator goes for something like 3 or 400 dollars. As usual, the more I look into this subject the more complex things get. Experimented with Arcview at work and like it a lot, just can?t afford it for home.

Anyway, thanks to all for the suggestions. Looks like I?ll just stick with manipulating gif images in PhotoShop. My first attempt at: http://www.creekbed.com/geocache/maps/usmap.htm (click on the Calif Cards link)

Funny, I started out just wanting to map the locations of my cheesy trading cards. LOL Next thing, I?m considering spending hundreds on map creation software. As my wife would say, ?No more hobbies!?
