Maptrails CD

Is anybody using the Maptrails CD (www.maptrails.com)? The website looks good and the price looks better but I'm wondering if it will enhance my geocaching. I'm using a Magellan 315 and very happy with it.

There are several different levels of detail in USGS topo maps. If you have ever seen the paper maps, they were in different scales. The best ones are the 7.5 minute maps which are typically at a scale of 1:24,000. They provide very good detail on the terrain. Older ones were the 15 minute maps which were typically 1:62,500. They provided considerably less detail on the terrain. There are also maps of lower scale that show a wider region and which provide even less detail.

The Maptrails CD to which you refer are at a scale of 1:100,000. This is a fairly low resolution and would only be usefull for a wide view of the area and not a great use for geocaching IMHO.

National Geographic and DeLorme both produce CD based maps which are based on the 1:24,000 scale 7.5 minute topo maps from USGS. Both of these products require several CDs per state. DeLorme also makes another product which has a lower resolution and covers the entire USA. Again, I would not recommend this for geocaching purposes.

I have used the NG Topo! product and I am very pleased with it.

Maptech is the one I prefer ... the series is a bit expensive ... but their genuine USGS topos. And their free navigator program is very handy in dealing with waypoints. Will not work without a CD in the drive though.

For an extra $10, we're going to be offering topo maps of the entire US with our new ExpertGPS software. It's in beta test now, but you can check it out or order an advance copy at http://www.expertgps.com.

ExpertGPS is compatible with our new Geocaching version of EasyGPS, which will also be released later this month.

Dan: do you know what resolution the ExpertGPS topo maps will be?

ExpertGPS resolutions range (in factors of two) from really big (you can see almost the whole state) to 1 meter/pixel on the aerial photos, or 2 meters/pixel on the topo maps. That's approximately a 2x magnification on a standard USGS 1:24:000 map. Put another way, you can count cars in parking lots with the aerial photos!

I've been testing ExpertGPS on every geocache I've visited since December. Using the aerial photos, I've been able to find approaches that weren't apparent on the topo maps.

We just released a public beta version of ExpertGPS. You can use the product for two weeks to evaluate it. Get your copy at http://www.expertgps.com/download.asp. We'll have a full manual and screenshots up later in the month.

Let me know what you think!

I downloaded the beta version and was very impressed; two questions, however:

will the CD improve the scroll time of the maps? I found them somewhat slow on my rather antiquated machine

Has the import function been disabled in this version? I was unable to import a set of mapquest directions

Thanks for what seems to be an excellent product.

You might try turning off the "Toggle Internet Connection" button, which may improve the scroll speed.

I was able to import MapBlast driving directions without problem in ExpertGPS b3. If you're still having problems, drop me an email at expertgps @ topografix.com

If anyone's interested, I'm looking for a geocacher to be featured in a user profile on the ExpertGPS site.

That link doesnt work. Also, I downloaded your easy gps, and it doesnt work too well.. I dont understand why it wont let me input waypoints. I started a new thread regarding the problem..

You are making a geocachers version of easygps? Cool... keep up the good work BTW, I enjoyed the functions of panterra during the trial, but I cannot afford the software. :^( It appeared that the functions of panterra I used were free on easy GPS, but it doesnt work at all. I am confused... there doesnt seem to be much difference between the two...
