Guest bennkeith
Are there any software programs out there that will allow me to use my Garmin 12 CX as a tracking device that I can follow on the Internet? Is this possible yet? If so, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!! Quote Link to comment

Non-realtime tracking is easy - just retrieve the 12CX later and download the tracklog to determine where it has been recently. Realtime tracking is also possible, but it requires additional hardware besides your 12CX. The 12CX doesn't transmit any signal, so you need something that will take the position information from it and transmit it in some way to the internet. One option is to use an amateur radio transceiver via the APRS (Amateur Packet Radio Service??) protocol. This would require an amateur radio license from the FCC in addition to the radio equipment. There is also the unlicensed FRS (Family Radio Service??) band, but it doesn't currently allow for data transmission. However, Garmin has requested a waiver to allow some data use of this band and I would not be surprised to see some products from them soon that combine GPS with an FRS radio. Another approach is to use the cellular phone network. Probably the best way to do this would be to use the Garmin NavTalk phone/GPS combination or something similar from another manufacturer. We have been doing this for a few years at the Naval Academy to track Yard Patrol Craft (small navy ships) and sailboats that the midshipmen use for training. For more info go to: http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/aprs.html And for more info about APRS and Packet Radio go to: http://tapr.org Eric, Topo map help page: http://www.geocities.com/fairbank56 Quote Link to comment
