Name and address on Meridian's startup menu?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Greetings from the first Platinum user in Japan

(apparently). Garmin rules here - except for a

few 310/315 users whose pages I found on the

Internet (hope they're still alive - most pages

dated 1997), Japan is a Magellan-free place.

I asked Thales if they have or plan to release

maps for Japan - nope. So all I have is a VERY rough outline of the coast.

Now back to subject.

Has anybody managed to put her/his name and

address on the Meridian's startup screen?

It would be very nice a feature to have in

Japan. Probably 90% of Japanese would return

a lost GPS to its owner.

By the way, this is why I'm here asking

silly questions:

BTW, I'm not the original Loible icon_wink.gif

Has anyone tried this?

The file is in Motorola S-Record format (or at least something close to it), so it's a bit more complicated than editing data with a hex editor.

I started to write a quick and dirty parser for it, but soon gave up after I realized that I've got no experience with S records. I stopped when I think I figured that the S7 record at the end of the code translated into "Now we've loaded the program, run it!" I figure even if I *did* change it, I'd be too afraid to use it anyway. icon_wink.gif

I may tweak with it when I get some time.

I reckon the worst that can happen is that I have to three-finger-salute it into the upload mode and re-load a good copy of the firmware.

The piece that made me quick and realize that I was WAY out of my league was the S7 record at the tail end of the meridian update. I've seen and molested data in intel .hex format before, but the motorola S format has that "starting execution address" record at the end. I took that to mean "you are loading program code to the unit. When the end comes, it runs that program to update the unit to the new firmware". I ain't going there just for fun! I'm probably wrong though. If I had a little bit of experience and fully understood it, I'd go for it. icon_wink.gif
