Hacking A Magellan Meridian.

Have noticed that when powering up my Meridian and holding down the "NAV" and "GOTO" during power up I get a screen best described as a 2 digit digital counter.

If I use up/down arrows it scrolls the counter. If I use left/right arrows it select what digit to scroll..

03 on counter and "ENTER" gives you a WAAS Status screen...

Also if holding down "ESC" and "NAV" during power up you get a "Burnin" screen.... HUH?

If unit seems to lock up in unresponsive mode and a blank screen, just pull (a) battery and replace, unit resets to "off"...

No time at present to explore more...

There is a whole list of key combinations that will do all sorts of things to your Meridian, some kind of risky...heres one combination that could come in handy...I'll keep looking for the rest......

Below are the recovery instructions for a dead MAP330 or Meridian.

They are written for the MAP330 but they work just as well for the Meridians.

1. If your MAP330/Meridian in in a "locked up" state (stuck on), power it down

by holding down MARK/GOTO and the ESC keys and press ENTER. This will

power down the unit.

2. Power it up in "Software upload mode" by holding down MARK/GOTO

and the ESC keys and press POWER. Unit shold power up with a

"software upload mode active" message.

3. Run magup.exe, select NO at the dialog box. Click on "Expert" and

checkmark "On" for the "Expert Upload" setting (be sure MAP 330/Meridian is

selected as the "Unit Type" and click "OK"

4. Select the firmware file by clicking on "File" then "Select Code File".

The firmware file should have a name like ZORRO204.SRE or ZORRO204.HEX or MRDN3_08.HEX.

5. Click on "Upload" and click "OK". Checkmark "Program Code Only".

Check "Upload File".

If you do a forum search for "hidden menu" you'll get some hits... I remember someone posting a partially complete list of what each of the numbers controlled, but I can't find it now.

Basically, we used to used option 92 to change maps, prior to firmware 3.12 coming out with its card utilities function. Other than that, I've never used it. Someone in there, you can turn off WAAS, too, but I don't know which number it is.

YES BE VERY CAREFUL with this!

There are soem codes that once you select the number and hit "enter", you've just done something to your unit.

These are marked with the "WARNING" label....
