WAAS in UK, re: GPS V

Recommended Posts

The Wide Area Augmentation System is owned and operated by the US FAA for use by aircraft in the US. You may be able to receive the WAAS signal, but no useful correction data. The correction data is based on measurements from ground stations, which are located only in the US. Sorry.

WAAS has a European equivilent called EGNOS. It is compatible with WAAS, in that a GPS that is compatible with WAAS is compatible with EGNOS.

However, it's currently in test phase and the signal is not always on. You need to enable WAAS, and have a clear view of the southern horizon as the EGNOS signal is transmitted from a geostationary IMMARSAT bird. I have got it to work a few times, but it failed to increase accuracy!

So, effectively at this point WAAS is not really something you can use and it is not worth upgrading to get. There is a website from the ESA which explains in more detail than you could possible want about EGNOS.
