MapSend Topo -- send data WITHOUT roads?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if I can send topo data as region files to a MAP330 using MapSend Topo WITHOUT the additional roads? I use my GPS mainly for geocaching on it's own. When I am mapping in the car, I have it connected to my PocketPC with Mapopolis. Therefore, all of the extra roads shown in a region from the Topo program are just extra garbage to me.

I want the topo info -- along with the topo-related POIs -- but I don't want the extra roads themselves. Is there some option that I'm missing that would allow this?

Thanks!

I don't think you actually *can* upload regions without roads, but under map options,if you turn map detail to "lowest" you might as well not have roads.

Actually, you do upload roads with the regions, otherwise you wouldn't have the additional detail that John Goggan is complaining about.

I took a quick look at Topo and didn't see any method to not include roads. You can remove Topographic data, and you can remove POI's even selecting which POI to remove.

Truth is, I don't think it can be done. Just ignore the GPS data and go with what's on your PocketPC.

Cheers!

Magellan wrote back to me and said that it couldn't be done -- but they seemed to agree it might be a good feature. They said they'd add it to the suggestions list for Topo...

Of course, they'll likely delete the email and have a good chuckle, but oh well. icon_wink.gif

This is a little tangential to what you're seeking, but it might help. This is a link to a page that describes how to edit the export.cfg file to change the shadings of specific map features. I would suppose that modifying unwanted streets and roads to LIGHT_GRAY (or maybe even WHITE)(?) would make the information either less prominent or disappear.

If you try this, be sure to (1) backup your original export.cfg file and (2) let us know how you make out.

Yup. Embra was on the right track. I've been playing with this for a couple of weeks I think this will do what you're after:

Find the file Export.cfg in

program filesmagellanmapsend topoUSMap

Make a copy of export.cfg because you'll probably foul it up the first time. I know because do every other time I play with it icon_smile.gif

Open Export.cfg in Notepad and look for the [LAYERS] section. Layers 0 through 3 (interstates, state highways, major roads, and street) are the ones you want to change.

In each line you'll see a series of numbers something like this:

'0 7 0 6 0 5 ... '

and so on, 15 pairs of numbers.

For layers 0 through 4, leave the first six numbers pn the line alone (e.g. '0 7 0 6 0 5') but change the rest of the line to zeros.

This will give the effect you want. On the HIGHEST quality level, you're GPS will pretty much act the same as always. Drop it down to HIGH and when you zoom in it will omit all of the roads. Will still show 4WD trails, railways, water features, etc.

For this to work, you have to define your region from scratch and re-upload it to the GPS. And the bother of it is when you want to go back to a "normal" configuration you'll need to restore the backup copy you made of export.cfg and re-do your regions again. It's really a big bother.

There's actually a lot of customization that you can do with this export.cfg file. But it's an awful lot of fiddling little changes to keep track of. I'm thinking about writing a little utility program to do it, but I'm not sure I would find enough use for it, often enough, to make it worthwhile.
