'nother newbie question - GCxxxx waypoint - where does this go

I have a Garmin V and I recently went on my first Geocache hike and entered the lat./long. coordinates and named it as waypoint GCxxxx - whatever was listed on the site by the person leaving the geocache. I was not successful in finding the geocache - I was soooo very disappointed. What did I do wrong? I really don't know what the GC number is for - perhaps that's my problem. Help! Thanks.

Your first step should be to go to www.geocaching.com and read all FAQ and help pages. The links in the very first paragraph should talk you 80% of the way to everything you might need.

On the cache's web page, right next to where it tells you the GCxxx waypoint, there's a little link that says "(what's this?)". Click it.
