Meridian vs GPS 76

My main question is for those that have a 76 what makes this unit so heavy, not that 1 lb is heavy. I have a GPS 12xl would it be worth it for me to upgrade to either one of these units. I purchased a Garmin because Magellan lacked the features and accuracy of Garmin units at the time. Has Magellan kicked it into gear and developed a match for Garmin units, I like the expandability of the Meridian although it is still lacking in the number of routes/waypoints 20/? vs 50/50 for Garmin. Does Magellan use proprietary connectors and can you make your own data/power cables.

Thanks from a newbie to the forum.

???????

GPS 76 weighs in at 7.5 oz with batteries. Your 12XL weighs 9.5 oz.

Merigold is 8 oz.
