using Mapsource Topo w/o the cd

Recommended Posts

Guest k2dave

Is there a way I can run the Mapsource Topo (east) program w/o having to put the cd into the drive? Can I load it onto my harddrive somehow? I want to do this because I don't want to have to swap cd's all the time and it would load faster from the harddrive.

This post is not about illegal copying - I own the Mapsource Cd (or at least the license) I just want to use it w/o the cd.

I've not used Mapsource Topo but I'd think it would be much the same as other software in that upon installation it creates an *.ini file either in the install directory or in the Windows directory. First, I'd look to see if such an entry exists. If so, try copying the cd to your HD (assuming it's big enough) and then changing the drive letter referenced in the .ini file to point to the HD partition that it's in. Make sure you get ALL the references. For example, my Street Altas 6 has a ref to the drive letter and then 3 separate refs to individual dirs. Hope this helps.

see one listing

Loc d:MGWest

To change, double click on Loc, and change the path to where the map files

are.

You only need to copy the one directory from the cd to the hard drive.

This way, if you are using a map with multiple disks, you can pick and

choose which ones to put on the hard drive

If you saved the registry and want to restore it, just find the file

(suffix of ".reg" and double click on it.

or you do this:

I created subdirectorie C:program filesGarmin, copied CD disk to this

directory, and executed the setup program. Program installed as usual, but

does not look for data on CD's.

The above was done with the Metroguide CD but it will probably work with TOPO.

Wow!! That was so easy, thank you!! I'm running NT 4 and I have both the MapSource US Roads & Recreation (1CD) and the US TOPO (3CD) packages. I followed your steps as outlined and I dumped the data from all 4 CDs into one directory. There are 9920 objects that take up 1.77GB. Thanks again!!

Thanks that really helps out and it is so much faster now. I just wish I had room on my laptop to load that cd as well
