I'll have to let the wisdom of the forums weigh in on whether or not you're supposed to trade for a pathtag, or if you can just grab it, much like you can with a travel bug or a geocoin, which are meant to be kept moving from cache to cache and are not subject to the "trade up or trade equal" guideline.
