Several times over the past year, the distance from point A to the waymark changed from "miles" to "kilometers".

I really don't comprehend Km (LOL) so I don't want this to change to Km.

How can I alleviate that problem?

Go here: http://www.geocaching.com/account/default.aspx

Scroll down to "Your Preferences" at the very bottom. Click "Change" in the top right corner of that box.

Change "Distance Units" to imperial.

Scroll to the bottom and click "Save changes".

The scientific units like meters, millimeters, centimeters and kilometers are based on a system of multiples of 10.

You no longer have to wonder how many quarts go in a gallon, how many inches go in a feet or how many feet go in a mile.

The prefix tells you the amount and once you know what milli-, centi- and kilo- mean you can apply that to not just meters (for distance), but also to liters (for volume), Joules (for energy) and grams (weight).

kilo- means 1000. kilometer = 1000 meters, kilogram = 1000 grams, kiloJoule = 1000 Joules. You get the idea.

The system reduces the number of conversion values you need to know to make your calculations drastically because of those prefixes, so take another shot when you get the chance. It's definitely worth it.

To get you started 1 meter = = 3.2808399 feet = 3 feet 3 3/8 inches

A normal adult would bridge approximately 1 meter with one step.

With that starting point, you can comprehend it in no time. Handy if you ever end up in Europe on holiday. :)
