diggingest_dogg616
Type in the zip code or the address of where it is you want to go. If you're signed in, the coordinates appear. I don't know if there are any in state parks or if they have different rules than national parks. Can't help with the iPhone, but if you have a clear view of the sky then it can work okay. If you're going to an intro to geocaching thing at the State Park, then I'd imagine they'd talk about GPS units more, but they might mention smart phones. If this something they're doing, then they should provide you with the coordinates when you arrive and things get started. I don't know about this orientation thing and what all's going down, but I hope you get your questions either here or there Quote Link to comment

+tomfuller & Quill
Looks like a great place would be to start with a virtual cache GCB5CE New Birds of Jupiter. Play>Hide & Seek a cache>type in address>Start with difficulty 1 or 1.5 caches. Start with caches that are larger than the micros. Check the format of cache pages. Down near the bottom of the page, you should click on nearest caches for other choices. Quote Link to comment
+Fireofficer
Welcome to a fun hobby. I have just recently started myself but have been reading a lot on here. I have learned a lot from the forums just by reading all the others posts. It would probably help if you could get hooked up with some other cachers from your area that have been doing it for a while. There's lots of friendly people on here that can answer questions for you too. Good luck and Have Fun. The iPhone 4and 4s have a great GPS. The Groundspeak Official app is well worth the $9.99 in the app store. It is by far the easiest one to use in my opinion. If you want just a GPS "dashboard" like app, then I would suggest MotionX GPS in the app store. It might be $2 or $3 but works just like the "dashboard" on many handheld GPS units so it includes a compass and heading, you can program waypoints into it, mark waypoints, etc. If you are going to a general GPS orientation class then this might be good as it will be similar to the screen that GPS users will be looking at when going after a cache. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motionx-gps/id299949744?mt=8 Hope this helps and have fun! Although I created my account 5+ years ago, I only started caching in the beginning of December '11 and I'm totally hooked! Quote Link to comment
Pup Patrol
Hey, I am brand new to geocaching, and was going to Johnathan Dickinson State Park (Jupiter, Florida) to check it out on Jan 21st. where / when do i get coordinates for the caches? If I understand this correctly, you will be attending GC30EFZ Cacheapalooza 6 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=757f3ebd-6277-4eb4-8847-d6a53ecaacd8 (You haven't posted a "will attend" log as yet.) This looks like a pretty large event, in a large park. Lots of things to do, and lots of caches to search. Perhaps it would be best to email the folks putting on the event and ask them about the coordinates for the caches. Go to their website: http://www.cacheapalooza6.com/ There are two pdf's to download. In the "CP6 Schedule of Events" pdf is this paragraph: Cords for your GPS. Most of our caches get published on Thursday and Friday. Puzzles usually on Tuesday. We will have a lap top computer with a book mark list of all the caches in the park available to upload to your GPS, however, there are many models of GPS's out there on the market, so if you have a cord that is not similar to your typical USB cord. BRING IT! Hope that helps. Sounds like a really super event. Don't be shy about asking questions, and meeting folks. Hope you have a great time. Quote Link to comment
Pup Patrol
Looks like there are a lot of caches already published. Go to the cache page for Cacheapalooza 6: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=757f3ebd-6277-4eb4-8847-d6a53ecaacd8 and click on the Geocaching.com Google Map: http://www.geocaching.com/map/beta/default.aspx?lat=26.992433&lng=-80.147617 While you are there, mention to someone (maybe at the registration table?), that this will be your first time looking for caches. Ask if it's possible to be teamed up with some experienced cachers who can help you. Quote Link to comment
