Bill93
Yesterday I was privileged to attend a ceremony dedicating a replica of the initial point for the Minnesota and Dakota land surveys. A member of the Surveyors Historical Society brought one of their Burt Solar Compass instruments which was of the same design that was used by the advance party as reconnaisance for the Iowa-Minnesota state line. I'm in the gray cap. The initial point was placed in 1852 on a land survey range line brought up from Iowa and at the longitude of a post that had already been placed in 1849 near the Mississippi River to mark the latitude N43 30'. To keep this on topic for GC, I saw three stations which I can log on GC, one of which was the 1849 monument later measured for geodetic position as AB9853.
