Getting tracks and routes from my Garmin to pc.

Hello all. I have a Garmin550t. I am using Mapsource. I am trying to transfer my tracks and routes from the garmin to Mapsource. I have followed the directions but nothing seems to be transferring. I click on the receive from device button and it sees my Garmin and I tell it to transfer. It says it has transfered but then nothing shows up in Mapsource. Does anyone have any experience or insights on this? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

First and foremost, the 550t must be in Mass Storage Mode before you can do any data transfer to or from the unit.

I have MapSource 6.15.11, but I believe this is true for all versions: The MapSource "Receive from Device" transfer function doesn't work with Colorado, Oregon, or Dakota units. The easiest way to get tracks, routes or waypoints from the unit is simply to use the File... Open command in MapSource to open the files. The data files are usually located in d:\Garmin\GPX, where d:\ is the drive letter for the unit.

Thanks Larry!,

Just knowing that has saved me some frustration. I will try what you said to do. I do have one question, It seems that opening a file will let me access it but is there a way to actually save it (say, all my caches and tracks) to the map on Mapsource so I don't have to open it from my Garmin every time? (Or am I missing something here.) Also, I have the same version of Mapsource as you.

Thank again!

Waypoints, tracks, and routes, at least on units like the Oregon, are simply files with a GPX extension. If you look in the d:\Garmin\GPX folder on your unit with Windows Explorer (assuming you have a Windows PC), you'll see these files listed. You can copy and paste these files to your PC's hard drive and keep them there for future use. I don't think you can save the files "in" the MapSource program, but you can easily keep them on your hard drive and open them whenever you need them.

I've been using the "Receive From Device" feature in MapSource with my Colorado 400t for over 2 years...no issues receiving waypoints or tracks from the GPS.

I believe the newer Oregon units (550 and 450) require Basecamp...have you tried that?

That's good to know that Garmin hasn't forced users to move to Basecamp.
