processedlemon
Hi All I have just started caching with the family recently. Due to limited funds I went for a summit HC that I picked up at a steal but it only came with basemaps. I was wondering if anyone knew of free topo maps that I can play around with before forking out cash for the Garmin version. I don't really need them, just have a new toy and want to play Quote Link to comment

processedlemon
Hi Anton I notced that the Topo maps on the URL have been remove. I did manage to find some rather basic street maps that I managed to load. The only hassle now is how do you remove them. I think it calls for a factory reset but will do a bit more research this side. Thanks for all the help, did you recieve any mails through the forum from me? +trevorh7000
Have a look here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map...Garmin/Download South Africa is not that well mapped. but it is better then nothing Or email me off-list. I might be able to help. Cape Town is extremely well mapped and I think the other major centres are looking quite good. Some areas are much better than what Garmin offers and the great thing is you can add and fix mistakes as you go. So your hometown not mapped - make it your hobby to map it and add to a great project. That Garmin img file for South Africa is over a year old and I know that there has been lots of action in the last year. I am on the local OSM mailing list and I know there is someone who has just added South Africa to their list of countries rendered on a weekly or monthly basis which means you can then get to use your own edits with in the week or month When I find this link I will add it. Unfortunately it is not topo which is what the original poster was after. Just keep on googling as their might be a few people that are sharing their custom made maps. Of course if there is nothing out there you can alwasy make your own - fancy scanning in some 1:50000 topo maps!?!! or even I suppose the 1:250000 could give useable results! Then I think NASA has height data for most of the planet that you could use in your custom maps. The possibilities are endless - but some of that high end mapping software is wuite priceyt, but there are free alternatives as well. Good Luck and if you come across any great topo or other maps - share! Ok I just delved into my old emails and found this update by the same guy as the link someonelsegave - this is a routable map Using mkgmap I've created an OSM routable map... Seems to work for me. http://www.firefishy.com/za-gmapsupp-18022009.img.bz2 Install instructions available here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map...ss_Storage_Mode Map can be viewed without a Garmin GPS using: GPSMapEdit (windows): http://www.geopainting.com/en/ QLandkarte (linux/unix) http://www.qlandkarte.org/ Garmin MapSource... later, requires registry hacking. And here is a source for DAILY updates of SA OSM data - not in img format - but you can get the free software that makes img files http://download.geofabrik.de/osm/africa/ Have fun Trev Quote Link to comment

+DamhuisClan
I am on the OSM email list, and have mapped most of the streets in Edenvale. I was planning to do Kempton Park, and Germiston as well. But since I have bought a Garmin, I have lost interest in doing it. From the email list, Capetonians are hugely active, and adding lots of details. It is nice to see such a huge community effort being undertaken. Quote Link to comment
