Am I doing this right?

It doesn't seem like I'm doing this right... please bear with me!

I just bought a Magellan Explorist 210 after seeing a show featuring geocaching. I read the manual but am still having trouble using its features... however, I have been able to find a few caches.

I have been writing down cache info in a notebook and using the device like a compass sort of, watching the numbers change as I go. Is this the way to do it? Or can I somehow send the information to my device?

thank you in advance for your help!!

Not overly familiar with the 210... there should be a way to manually enter the map coordinates directly into the unit as with the Magellan I have... if not, then you will probably want to upgrade, and if you want to be able to download coordinates via a USB into your GPS you'll need one compatible: so a Garmin...

I just looked up the 210 and it apparently comes with Magellan Geocache Manager software.

That would be what you should be able to use to upload your geocache finds. I would suggest going for the Pocket Queries when you feel comfortable. It sounds like you are starting out with how to find a geocache. Take your time it will come and if you are confused about something please ask.

Welcome to the sport! I have an old Magellan GPS 310 which I use as a backup to my backup. The problem with these units is that they only read minutes to only 2 decimal places.

Once you have the GPS reading the current position, press the "MARK" button, then using the central "arrow" button set the location of the cache you want to look for. Once you have it entered properly, use to GOTO and the distance and direction to the cache will show up. Keep practicing and you'll figure it out.

There are many better units to cache with but with some patience you can even find caches without a GPS.

Once you learn to "follow the arrow" your efficiency will improve greatly. Attend an event and meet your local geocachers.
