mrcw
Hi - new to the game. I live in Japan and would like to buy a GPS unit and have some fun. My requirements are: Budget 50 000 Yen (about USD450) English be handy if it could be mounted on a mountain bike Are GPS units "universal" eg the Garmin I buy locally here in Japan, could be set to be exactly the same (language/maps etc) to the one I could buy in the US? Is there any downside to buying (apart from the massive price difference!) one in Japan? Can basemaps be changed? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. +Nachtraaf
Hi there, Well, I live in Europe (Belgium) and bought my GPSMap 60CSX in the USA for about USD300, the basemap is US, but you don't want to use that in europe :-) You can buy additional (topo) maps of your region for reasonable prices (which I did) and there exists mounts for bicycles for this type of gps. Therefore I suggest the GPSMAP60CSX... Kind regards, Hans Quote Link to comment

Regards Callum Tokyo Welcome to the forums. The Japanese Garmin models are different that the North American models and cost from 2 to 3 times as much as the North American versions. You are better off getting a North American version for REI and then getting your maps from here. The mount for the bike can be picked up locally. The base maps can't be changed, and will make no difference if you get the uud.com maps. I woulds look into a Vista HCx to keep within you budget, as the V2.0 Maps are 11,550 YEN (Tax In). REI's exchange policy is the best and they have many Japanese customers so they have lot's of experience dealing with international shipments... Quote Link to comment

mrcw
one more question - do you think the maps from UUD would work on the new Colorado units? I have emailed UUD, but thought you guys/girls might know as well. Thanks very much. Quote Link to comment
