+MNorby Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 (edited) Looking at either a Garmin 60CSx ora Magellan explorist XL. Looking to something with memory card capability and good maping and uploading to computer (map out various trails). Prob something with topo map capabilities too. Also tried geocaching today and something that will work great for that. This will be mounted in a offroad rig too so something kinda rugged. Any tips on those units or someone have a better unit recomendation? also I have vista on my laptop and XP on my desktop. I read something about vista support problems Edited October 22, 2007 by MNorby Quote
gallet Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 If you are thinking about the 60CSx then you should also consider the Vista HCx same specs but lighter and smaller. Maybe it also has the edge over the 60CSx with regards to getting a fix in very difficult conditions but there's not much in it. Quote
+imajeep Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 (edited) Go with the Garmin. They have a far better reputation for customer service. As between the 60 CSx and the Vists HCx, that's a matter of personal preference. Both have high sensitivity receivers, so both will work well under dense tree cover and in slot canyons. The 60 CSx has a somewhat better antenna, and it's more rugged. I've dropped mine several times, with no ill effects. The Vista HCx is smaller. It will fit in a shirt pocket, although it may not record an accurate breadcrumb track if held vertically. Edited October 22, 2007 by imajeep Quote

In fact I've seen reports of it suffering from vibration problems when used on a bike. I also have seen no evidence that the antenna is better. My HCx tracks with 3 meter accuracy while hanging vertically upside down while inside a train carriage. Quote
