Problem opening .loc & .gpx files directly from the website

Hi,

I want to open .loc and .gpx files directly from the geocaching.com website into my application of choice.

I make sure the correct associatin is set in Windows Explorer's File Types. If I double click a .loc or .gpx file using Windows Explorer or on my desktop it is correctly opened in the application, for example EasyGps or Magellan's Geocache Manager.

However, when I go to a cache webpage on geocaching.com it doesn't work if I try to open it directly. I click on the LOC Waypoint File or GPS Exchange File and then it prompts me to Open it or Save it. When I select Open, my application of choice (e.g. EasyGPS) opens but gives me an error like "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KDKDK43\geocaching[1].loc file does not exits. I checked and the file does not exist.

If I choose Save instead of Open and save the file somewhere on my computer and then, after saving is complete, choose to open the file it opens correctly. For some reason I'm unable to open the file directly into the application.

I've tried this on two computers (XP & 2000) using Maxthon and IE 6.

Does anybody have a tip? Do other people have the same behaviour?

Thanks,

Michiel (Team Jack Bauer)

I have not tried it before, but I just gave it a shot and the .gpx file from the cache page opened up fine directly into GSAK. Actually, I didn't even know I could do that.... so it looks like you helped me even if I couldn't help you B)B) ....

EDIT: Tried a .loc and it worked fine, too... have you tried several different caches?

I don't know sure. But i think it has somthing to do with security settings or thrusted sites from Internet Explorer Actualy behind the promt wath to do with the file Open or Download there is a other prompt for downloading. But after klikking on open the file is not downloaded.

Thanks for your reply.

I tried many caches, but it keep going wrong for me. It tries to open geocaching[1].loc, where i think it should be geocaching.loc. Very weird.

Have you already downloaded (or tried to download) another geocaching.loc file? The [1] means that IE is saving the new file and renaming it to avoid replacing an existing file.

Maybe clearing your temporary internet files/cache will help.

Thanks for the info; I can now open loc's and gpx's directly into GSAK.

I switched the default to EasyGPS, and both files open properly even though the files "C:\Documents and Settings\...\geocaching[1].loc" and "C:\Documents and Settings\...\GCYTCD[1].gpx" did not exist when I checked afterwards.
