GPSMap 60CSx question:

One of these days I'll be hopping and skipping in sheer delight because I'll have purchased a 60CSx. (I'll also be broke, but that's another story). Anyway, it seems pretty pointless to buy the 60CSx if you're not going to upgrade the memory card to store maps for navigation. As such, I have a couple questions:

1) What's the largest micro SD card capacity that the 60CSX can handle? Is there a limit?

2) How much storage on the SD card would be required for the entire USA? How about just the eastern half of the US?

I'm watching for deals on 1GB and 2GB micro SD cards, but I really don't know how that capacity translates to actual area covered. Everything east of the Mississippi would be great to have, but would a 1GB card hold it all?

Using City Navigator North America v8 everything east of the Mississippi is just over 800 MB. You can have all of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and the entire USA to the east and still be just over 950 MB. The remainder of the USA amounts to less than 500 MB.

Cool! Sounds like a 1 GB card would easily suit my needs, but if I find a deal on a 2GB I can put the whole country in the palm of my hand. Oooohhh... the power!!!!!! :D Thanks for the info!

When the 2GB microSDs came out last week, Quoddy confirmed (over in the 2gb MicroSD Is Here thread) that there's still a limit of 2025 map segments total, even if the card still has sufficient room to store more. Shouldn't be an issue unless you're combining City Nav with vast tracts of another map product that uses lots of small segments (like US Topo/Topo 24K).

The SanDisk press release from a bit over a week ago that announced the 2GB microSD cards indicated that Verizon Wireless stores have exclusive sales rights within the U.S. for the first 60 days, supposedly for a price of $99. (Although one of the early 2GB adopters, zookc, said it cost him $89.99 (+tax), and that was at a Verizon store.)
