Stupid Questions

I apologize for my ignorance, I am an absolute neophhite, but I have ordered a Garmin 2610 and have since discovered geocaching. I am partially handicapped and use a walker or canes. I have 2 stupid questions.

1-Can I geocache with the 2610?

2-Are most caches accessable to a handicapped person?

also, while most cache hiders are pretty good about rating their caches, make sure you read both the cache description and some of the previous logs - just to get a better sense of the terrain.

once you've found some caches, and have a better sense of the caches in your area, you might be able to try for a lot of the ones with terrain ratings of 1.5 or even a rating of 2, which might be a very short walk on a grassy area. It just depends on your physical skills and how cachers near you tend to rate their caches. you'll quickly get a better sense after you find a few.

The stupidest questions are the ones that aren't asked.

1) The 2610 appears to be more of an automotive unit. Having never seen one myself, is it functional outside of the vehicle? That will be the biggest determining factor about how useful it is for Geocaching.

2) A lot depends on your area. In our area I would say MOST caches aren't handicap accessible, but that isn't to say there still aren't a lot that are. As mentioned above, look for caches with a terrain rating of 1.

Good luck and welcome to the game!

I'm not familar with the unit, but if it's Garmin, it's good. As to the second part. Look for caches that have a terrain difficulty of 1. There are tons of them.

Thank you

The 2610 is more of a street navigation, but any GPS that gives you coordinates is good enough! :)

Good luck, and happy caching!

Thank you.

We have the Street Pilot 2610, we just got it a few weeks ago and LOVE it. It's the best thing since bread came sliced.

It is not, however, suitable for caching on its own as it does not have any battery backup. If it's not in the car, it ain't woikin. :) Plus, I am guessing, after having had a Street Pilot III before this one, that it would not get a strong enough signal in tree cover, and you would not get such an accurate lock.

We use ours for caching and would be lost without it, but when we get out of the car, we fire up our handheld Magellan Explorist.

Happy caching!

I would suggest since you have restrictions that you contact the cache owner before trying to find it in case there are barriers to your success. We try to identify our caches correctly, but sometimes we do not think of all the restrictions a prospective cacher may have. I would also suggest contacting the local cacher organization in your area. I am sure that there are many cachers that would be willing to go with you on your first adventure and show you the ropes.
