  1. When I click the links in your communication email, I am redirected to the app which is useless. Somehow, the direction to the browser won't work. (Same as the Open in browser link in the app, but this is already discussed in another topic)
  2. Doesn't pass MY smell-test. Sounds like a phishing expedition. Bet they ask for more info aside from another verified email address to sell. Then MORE info from you. REALLY look at the addresses and any links in the email before clicking on anything. Float your mouse over each hyperlink to see the address to which it points. Be suspicious. If you want to check, email the SUPPORT link at the bottom of every page on the website. See that? I didn't even give you an email address to use, because THAT'S scam-behavior, too!
  3. Today I received an email (actually three) asking me to vote about demoting someone. In the email I am referred to as an officer in the group. Lucy, somebody has some 'splaining to do. How am I now considered an officer? I mean, I only recently added my first WM in any category. I was in Scouting for 15 years, so I'm familiar with being "Voluntold", but usually there is a bit of explanation.
  4. I suppose this doesn't apply to the hide-from-3rd-party-apps 'feature' So the option would really only relate to the email address anyway. It does seem kind of frivolous; but it's similar to the option for people to see your email address or hide it on your geocaching profile (ideally, they should be the same option, instead of just an AL reporting function)
  5. I'm curious, what legal liability does an absent owner expose HQ to, and why doesn't this apply if the cache doesn't have any DNFs, NMs or NAs? HQ doesn't know the CO's real name, physical address, phone number or anything else apart from an email address that may or may not be monitored. From what I've read of the Terms and Conditions, HQ absolve themselves of any responsibility at all for the physical caches, regardless of whether the CO is active or not.
  6. Is it possible to email in find details? I can access Email from the middle of no where in the outback but I can't access the website until I return to civilization so this option would speed up the process.
  7. if the user can hide the email address, then it effectively makes the sender a no-reply email address. Unless replying can be like the message center and push the reply to their MC inbox. Or the system can just forward the reply silently to the original user by proxy. Otherwise... yeah, reporting an error becomes an anonymous one way alert. =/
  8. It also seems that the reporting user can tick the box to "allow creator to view my email", even if they haven't verified their email address. That feels... wrong: the system shouldn't give me an e-mail address that hasn't been verified to belong to the reporting user.
  9. Having said that, it does seem to have become much less reliable of late. On the 5th of December, I received a Message Centre message from another cacher. I didn't get an email for their initial message (fortunately I did get a notification on my phone) but their second message, about an hour later, did generate an email, as did the third about an hour after that. Yesterday, I received three messages from another cacher, spread over a couple of hours. I didn't get an email for any of them nor even a phone notification, I just happened to notice the yellow dot on the envelope at the top of a cache page I'd opened. I have the incoming Message Centre email preference set to "notification after 30 minutes of inactivity" so I'd expect to always get an email for the first message from a cacher.
  10. The raw HTML is showing in pocket queries in both Gmail and Yahoo email (this is from Yahoo):
  11. Email notifications from the in-app message center can be disabled by the user, whereas a direct email will always be sent to the user's inbox. Whether it's an inbox they still monitor or have access to is a different question.
  12. When someone sends me a message through the Geocaching Message Center I get an email alerting me that I have a message. I assume that if you send an email it would be the same address that Geocaching uses to alert a user about a message so it shouldn't matter which you use..
  13. If you sent a message through the built-in geocaching message center, you could try sending an email instead. If the CO hasn't logged in for awhile, an email could be more likely to reach them than a typical geocaching message.
  14. Long story short. I have starting coordinates. I have a bearing. I have distance to location. I would like to find the location coordinates, so I can check out the location on a map. I can not post the starting coordinates online for fear its a spoiler, but can email them to anyone that can help. Thanks, AchStone
  15. I can be a bit of a dunderhead when it comes to puzzle caches, I'm probably the only one in the state who hasn't been able to solve all the geoart puzzles from the 2018 mega near here. Sometimes I can be lucky, like one recently where the pattern of numbers reminded me of an encoding scheme I'd used a lot at work, and sure enough that's what it turned out to be, but on another recent one I disappeared down rabbit holes involving base64 conversions, signs on buildings at the listed coordinates and email encoding schemes when it actually had nothing to do with any of that and was much more straightforward. After a nudge (well, two nudges) from the CO, I got there with the obligitary forehead slap and ultimately gave it an FP for both the puzzle and hide. Puzzles can cover a broad range of interests, skills and difficulties, where one man's meat is another man's poison is an absolute truism. Do the ones you like and ignore the rest.
  16. Hi Picklesj, If you’ve clicked on the words “Download Now” in the email, you should find that is enough to put the PQ file into the Downloads folder in your PC. Open the Downloads folder in File Explorer in Windows 10, and your PQ should be at the top of the list as a .zip file (may have to sort by Date Modified if it’s not at the top). Double-click on the zip file name and a new window will open in which are shown the two .gpx files (as referred to in the 28 July post above). Now you can copy those two gpx files into your handheld GPS as described in that post. SECOND method (if needed) : The above seems to work reliably for me but if you find that clicking Download Now in the email is only taking you to the “Your Pocket Queries” page without putting the file in the downloads folder : Go down the Your Pocket Queries page to the link “Pocket Queries ready for Download” which should then have a 1 in the brackets after it. Click on that link, a box appears under it with the PQ name in. Click on the PQ name and that should download the zip file into the Downloads folder. These ways seem to work OK for me with my Garmin 62S, but please come back if any further queries. I can't help about using the phone I'm afraid as I only use the Garmin.
  17. I just got my first "Your log was removed" email. At first, I thought that my found it log was deleted. I had to check the cache page to find out that it was my NOA log that was deleted. The CO removed everything about the need of maintenance together the maintenance log. It is very good that the deletion mail now contains explanation, if the CO is willing to share one, but it should also contain link to the archived log and the deleted log type would also be a nice addition.
  18. Got an email from UPS stating my shirt is to be delivered today, another email from Groundspeak I believe showed an attachment to obtain the results but I cannot get those results. Apparently the attachment need to be converted but when I go through the indicated process I see no results. Maybe it worked and I simply have no clue where to look to retrieve it. No matter, the world will still function. Edit: of course this would happen! Shortly after writing the message above I went back to the email from Lee and the attachment opened to a YouTube presentation. But I could not hear very much of the conversation ,the male voice pretty much but the other I could only hear noise, not recognizable content.
  19. I wasn't sure what the etiquette is for missing stages. So in my log I said that the plaque was missing so I started guessing at 1930 and quickly got the right answer (it was 1932). The owner is active so I hope he fixes it promptly. I don't know if I can check to see if he has made the fix. He never contacted me, and I have yet to be contacted by the library AL owner but it's only been a few hours since I posted the missing stage for the library AL. (I did check off the box that provided my email address with my missing report).
  20. I would have no problem removing the now archived cache. I would post a note on the cache page — ‘The container has been removed and I will hold on to it for a month. If the owner would like it back I will be happy to arrange a pickup. After one month I will recycle the container for use in a new cache. ‘ I would also email him for good measure.
  21. Can anyone tell me the email-to-SMS address for the Three Network. I would like to have alerts come to my phone but can't find their address.
  22. Only one bounce disables your account? Seems harsh, given today's internet. Would it be possible for GS's system to respond to a bounced email by sending a message to the cacher through the Message Center? How about something like this: "Hello, TeamRabbitRun - This message is being sent to tell you that we got a bounceback from an email sent your email address <"email address">. This COULD be indicative of a problem, or it could be a transient e-glitch. Please note that if we get another one, we're shuttin' you down. Cache-on!...Groundspeak"
  23. Interesting - I got the email stating I was receiving a Cache Crate travel bug, but we were traveling and I didn't look closely, and figured we'd be home before it arrived and I'd have time to figure out the requirements and all later. I checked after reading this thread, and sure enough, although it came to my email address, it was sddressed to a different geocacher! I got a second email today - apologizing for the mixup, and apparently I WILL be getting a trackable at some point in the future months) once they produce a second run. Part ofthe text I received today... As you may have guessed, the email you received yesterday about winning a trackable was caused by a glitch in our mailing list. Unfortunately, your name was not initially selected to receive a Cache Crate™ trackable. ...Now, the good news. We are going to fix our mistake and you will receive a Cache Crate trackable, though the process will take a few months. The email didn't say if I was going to be required to log and hashtag it, and all that as the original was to be. Guess I just wait and see!
  24. So here's what I'm not clear about. Do you consider caches where the owner is no longer active (for whatever reason) but don't have any issues, don't have outstanding NMs and haven't been brought to the attention of the reviewer, either by an NA or the CHS, to be abandoned trash? Or is it okay for those to remain listed until such time as issues arise? To clarify my position: No NMs or NAs, no CHS flag, no DNF logs that suggest the cache might be missing, just an owner who's no longer active - no problem, let them be. They can still be a great caching experience for years or decades to come. Historical outstanding NM that was either a false alarm or a minor issue that was addressed by the community - no problem as long as the community are staying across it. CHS flag that's a clear false positive or where the problem is just the D-rating being a bit too low to fit the algorithm's expected distribution of finds and DNFs - I would hope the reviewer would let it be, but some of the examples posted here suggests not (which is what started this discussion). NM about a more serious issue that can't be readily addressed by the community, such as a missing cache or one that's really reached end-of-life - if no CO response in a reasonable time, follow with an NA if the reviewer isn't already across it. As for reasons COs become inactive, usually it's not a conscious decision or something that happens overnight, more likely a gradual waning of interest accompanied by a change in life situation, such as starting a family or moving away from the area. Perhaps, with a change of email provider, they stop getting log notifications without really noticing, particularly if their caches are rarely found these days. With the 25th anniversary fast approaching, many of those early players who might have been in their 50s or 60s when they started in the 2000s would now be in their 70s and 80s and a lot of things can creep up on people in that age range that would ulitimately lead them to becoming inactive COs. Dementia, stroke and death are three of the more extreme possibilities, but there are lots of other conditions that limit physical activity. I'm sure most aren't intentionally giving the finger, they've just gradually drifted away until they lose contact. I just turned 69 so it's likely that, somtime in the next decade or so, I'll have to consider what to do with at least my higher terrain hides. They were designed as much as possible to be maintenance-free, such as that ammo can in the remote hilltop cave, so when I reach a point where I can no longer get out to them (and even that's more likely to be a gradual impairment than something overnight), I'll have to decide whether to leave them there for the benefit of any new players or visitors to the area, try to find an adopter (not easy around here) or just archive them and persuade a friend to go out and collect them. My wish, should I no longer be in a position to make that decision, is for them to be archived and, as an aside, I think it would be a great addition to the website to be able to leave a geo-will saying what you want done with your caches if you become uncontactable.
  25. I got my first blackmail email yesterday. It is a scam! But of course I figured that. Why am I telling you all about it? During my search on this issue I found a website that can tell you if your password or your account name had possibly been compromised. My email and password had not. As well as many of my other web sites that I use. All except one. Geocaching .com and the geocaching store. My password had been viewed five times to my geocaching account. My password had been viewed once to the geocaching store. Geocaching.com has not told us about any attacks!!!! So last night I changed them. I would suggest that everybody check thiers as well. I have also been getting scam emails from caching friends. So this may have happened quite some time ago. Who knows this may have happened during the fake geocaching accounts created by that BOT.
