  1. Today, 40 minutes after the end of the scheduled downtime window, I logged a couple of TDs on my caches (GC8JGWN and GC92WV1) via the website but, an hour on, haven't received any email notifications of those logs. I did however get a new cache notification.
  2. Ive had two Garmin devices over the last ten years. The first one was a GPSMAP and the lastest was an Oregon 550. Both have failed the same way. (see attached photos of the Oregon) The rubber on/off button perished and eventually fell to bits exposing the microswitch inside. Ive not had it outside since I realised how exposed the electronics were and ive just sent an email to garmin asking if its fixable. Are there any decent alternatives to Garmin devices? I know they have a good name, but I just want to know what else people have used and not had any problems with.
  3. Yes, but since the OP referred to "email-to-SMS" I just assumed it was standard SMS service that was used. Also I've seen in a description of one such service (probably from a US carrier) that it sent the first 160 characters of the email as an SMS.
  4. Probably one of the emails (as are visits on my own waymarks) that were sent to the account you opened your membership with geocaching.com with? I changed the default email address to my current one but the visits (and some others) are still sent to the one I started with.
  5. That is odd as I found that feature worked fine for me - when I had it turned off I was getting an email sent every time a message was received - so during a back and forth, email after email just saying you have a message - I discovered that feature and since then the only emails were from 'new' messages and none during convos (until the reent issue - but that is sorted now too.
  6. I got my stats in an email today. My chart says my best caching day was 05/06/23, when I found 48 caches. I only found eight caches that day. How do I get this fixed?
  7. I think, in such a case, if some daring individual is aware of the blissfully-ignored cache listing, they could simply email a reviewer and point out the issue with it. Then at least you know the reviewer has seen the listing and should receive some sort of response or defence of its persistent state. At worst, email HQ. There's no mechanism to have a cache-listing-with-issue remain unavoidably untouched and undealtwith, at least without reason. If right to the top TPTB still do nothing, then they must have their reasons.
  8. I don't think I understand what you mean, but there is indeed a problem in the "use". There is no real feedback. The poster will receive an email with all the comments, but not the officers. So many/most officers just start a vote and then forget about it. They never check the results. They do not learn anything and the next similar case will also go to vote. And so on.
  9. It sounds like you've already done option 1 so you might want option 2. There is an option 3 (and probably a 4-∞ too) but option 3 would be to take your already setup email notifications automatically forward them to your SMS "email" address found in the long list below. If you're using gmail youd setup a filter and forward the newly published notification emails to your SMS address. That way if your data is off you should still get the text and able to stop at the nearest McDonalds for a large coke and some free wifi so you can update your cache list How to set up an Instant Notifications: Option 1: To a data-enabled phone Visit the Instant Notifications page to add a new notification. Select cache and log types to watch. If you want to be alerted to newly published caches, select the log type "publish listing." Set the location (central point) and distance (around that point) you want to watch. Check the email listed in the "Send to" drop-down menu. (If you would like to send Instant Notifications to an alternate email, you will need to manage your email addresses first.) Check "Enable Notifications". Click the "Create Notification" button. Note: The speed with which you receive Instant Notifications is dependent on the frequency that your phone checks for email (make sure you have it set to automatic syncing) Option 2: To a basic SMS-enabled phone To find the email address associated with your phone number, Check the list below for your mobile carrier. The address will typically be your ten-digit phone number followed by some version of "@MobileCarrierName.com." Sign in to your Geocaching Premium account and visit your Account Details page. Find the box that says "Your Validated E-Mail Addresses" and click on "Change." Enter your email-to-SMS address and your Geocaching.com password. Click "Add Email Address." A text message that includes an email account validation link will be sent to your phone. Click on the link to validate (to do so, you will need to have internet access on your phone). Visit the Instant Notification page to add a new notification. You will have to select a cache type and log types to watch. If you want to be alerted to newly published caches, select the log type "publish listing." Set the location (central point) and distance (around that point) you want to watch. Select your email-to-SMS address in the "Send to" dropdown. Make sure "Enable Notifications" is checked and then hit the "Create Notification" button. Start this process again from step 5 to set up additional notifications. You can set up 40 notifications max. 10. Don't know how many times that 99.999% has been wrong. We were even a "99.999%" ourselves once... New, we had DNFs going to and others DNF caches after we found 'em. Eventually most cachers thought "that Cerberus bunch were thieves..." Talking about us at events, the other 2/3rds wasn't the happiest camper. Eventually I'm the one that caught the guy and passed info to others. To date, not one cacher that had caches missing ever apologized... 1 - Nope. Unless you think spending 30+ bucks for PM make anyone more responsible/trustworthy... 2 - Nope. PM might block some basic members, but a simple email to HQ gets you a free one-week PM (if never had a PM earlier) - If I had a free PM, I'd be sure to list every PM in the area, so when my temp PM runs out, I can still find them... 3 - Unless you have a pic of them stealing your cache, you don't know for sure. 4 - "Because of the nature of our services, which require a cellular data plan or GPS device and the ability to travel to various locations, our services are not directed toward anyone under the age of 16" - Geocaching HQ Apr. '23
  11. I have now received reports on 2 of my ALs. In both cases I believe that the reports were not in the spirit of the intended outcome. In the first case I received a report that indicated "Problem Specifics: Other". The user added additional information of "HBM...isn't working" (which I can't decipher in the context of my AL). The problem here is that the report doesn't tell me which location is at issue. Another problem in this case is that the user didn't give clear details. I reached out via the email address for clarity but haven't seen a response. So I get an ambiguous report with very little detail and no way to determine if there is a problem to solve or how to solve it. And if there is no response from the user I am left hanging. But on top of that, the email indicates that if this continues to happen, HQ may take "additional administrative action". Hardly seems fair to the AL owner if the provided info can't lead to actionable results. The second report I received was from a Geocacher who I know. This report indicated that "a location isn't accessible". Again, no detail on which location. And no additional info on what the problem is (a plaque removed? a building demolished? a park turned into a parking lot?). Also, and interestingly, when I checked the reviews on this AL, that user had left a review. Which means that they completed whichever location they reported. After reaching out to the user, it turns out there was a protest going on that temporarily prevented them from getting an answer. Ok. I don't need to resolve anything here. However, I now have an "X" against me/this AL as far as HQ is concerned. What if a larger group of users had sent reports because of a protest? I have no idea what threshold triggers "additional administrative action" and what those actions might be. I think that HQ has some work to do on this feature. Thoughts for consideration: - the email report should include the specific name of the location in question - users should be able to provide more than the limited information they can currently give - there should be some sort of reference number for each report (since HQ is watching to potentially take "additional administrative action") so that all parties can be on the same page - AL owners should be able to report back to HQ that an issue has been resolved (similar to writing a "Maintenance Performed" log on a traditional/etc. geocache) ... and this should reduce the "X" against the AL by 1 for each owner response - HQ needs to better define for AL owners the consequences of not responding to these reports, and at what thresholds "additional administrative actions" might be taken, and what those actions might entail - in the Builder, create a place where the owner can view the list of outstanding and closed issue reports I applaud HQ for continuing to develop Geocaching in general and Adventure Labs in this specific instance. The community has requested the ability to report problems to AL owners and HQ has responded. However, this version of the capability is not without problems, and there is a lack of transparency between HQ and the AL owners as to status and consequences.
  12. Can't change Email address in Account Settings. (Firefox/Safari). No preferences diplayed. the same for Home Location.
  13. I've found this an issue with some virtuals and earthcaches as well. Some people write "email me the answers" in the cache description, and what they really mean is "use the Geocaching message system". Other people write "email me the answers" in the cache description, and what they really mean is "email the answers to an actual email address". I do not like doing the latter too much, but I have only seen a couple of instances where it explicitly said "do not use the Geo messaging system" and I guess that is their clear preference. Perhaps this is a holdover from the earlier days?
  14. Yes, I saw a cache log the other day with a find logged for a cache in Australia with words something like, "I have never visited Australia, but I decided to log a cache there." If that was my cache as soon as I saw the email, I would delete it. No need to go out and check the log for that one. As it was still on the cache log after a few days (weeks?) it seems the CO of that cache is just leaving the armchair logger's log there. Where it gets really annoying, is where the CO does nothing about these logs, and ruins others using that cache to fulfil a Challenge. I see that as selfish of both the logger and the CO. The CO for not making it fair for all geocachers. Examples; 1. Years ago I was trying to build up enough caches for a find caches not found for six months challenge. This multicache had not been found for a year, but someone mucked that up by logging a find for, as they wrote, "Found the first WP." The CO never deleted that, even after being contacted. 2. The second example could be logged, but it makes it unfair for those who really fulfilled the challenge, which was a VERY hard one. Find a cache is every Australian Territory in one calendar year. I qualified for that, but likely had to drive about 15,000kms to do it, and catch a ferry to Tasmania. You also naturally had to log the cache, which I did. Some people either never signed the log, or had only ever found caches in one Territory. The CO did nothing about either. If a CO makes a cache a challenge, that should check people do actually qualify. I suppose the warning there that the CO wouldn't be checking people qualified, is that this very hard challenge was only rated the (I don't really care) 1.5D/T. Sadly you are correct, but I have found there is often a correlation between those who do check logs and take the appropriate action, and those who maintain their caches. The two go hand in hand.
  15. I never created a cache page, in work or anything like that due too the fact that I emailed the reviewer In my area seeing if the spot was open, they said you can place a cache there as the area is open, I went on to ask if they could hold that area for me if I made a cache page, they said they can not hold a spot. I ended up not even bothering at that point to hide the caches as it is winter now and would wait till spring to place them. Should I email again asking if I made a cache page, if they could hold the area?
  16. Hello, Since 2 days, I no longer receive notifications of new cahceS. I obviously checked my email address, spam, my mailbox, etc. but nothing seems faulty to me! I canceled all alerts and recreated all new ones, but still without success Can you please help me? thank you very much in advance Crapion (Liège-Belgium-Europe)
  17. I really wish they'd use different terminology here. To me, "personal information" is stuff like my real name, email address, physical address, phone number, date of birth, etc. but none of that is shared with Authorized Developer partners or even known by HQ. There's nothing in a geocaching profile that links to a real person unless that person decides to make themselves known.
  18. Has anyone else ceased to receive their "Your waymark has been approved" notices?
  19. I received the Wheel of Challenges survey email last week and duly completed it. Now I've just received another email, only this time in French.
  20. I have caches where I don't really care (or at least I'm very tolerant of spoilers, and a bunch of them with disclaimers that say something like "Spoiler logs or photos will be deleted, and you'll be enthusiastically invited to come back and re-log without the spoilers." Then, I DO IT. I could send them a message and wait for them to fix it, but if it takes two weeks for them to get to it, then that's two weeks of people reading my crafted puzzles, along with some knucklehead's specific instructions. Nope. Too often, cachers, especially newer cachers seem to have the attitude that it's 'us against them', and they want to 'help future seekers'. They're not helping. As long as my cache descriptions have the warning, I don't feel bad about deleting the log. I send my notes to them in the Message Center and email, if they have an email address.
  21. When you hide a cache, you should frequently check the email associated with your account. You will receive email notifications when your cache is submitted for review successfully, when your Reviewer has a question about it, and when your cache is published. After publication, you'll automatically receive notice of all logs to your cache page. Thanks for hiding your first cache! I see you've created a cache page, but it's disabled. Your Reviewer will not see it until you submit the page for review.
  22. In the email announcement of the new souvenir for International EarthCache Day 20, the button entitled "Can You Dig It" appears to be broken. It returns a DNF.
  23. Hey all; was hoping you could provide some constructive criticism on improving my "hey I didn't get your answers" message. What I'm currently working with is below. Any suggestions to improve/clarify/sound less demeaning would be apprecaited! Hello!About once a month I go through and review my Earthcaches and I notice that you logged a find on GC84H59 Sandy Beach - Juneau Earthcache #6. It's entirely possible that they may have slipped through the cracks, but as of yet I don't seem to have any answers from you. If you're already well versed in geocaching, please ignore this next part, but I've found that many times newer cachers may not be aware about the differences between an Earthcache and a Virtual Cache! A virtual cache often requires you to merely visit a location (and possibly take a photo). An Earthcache requires a cacher to visit a location and complete an Earth-Science lesson to log a find! For more information on Earthcaches use this link: http://www.geosociety.org/GSA/fieldexp/EarthCache/guidelines/home.aspxAgain, please send your answers as soon as possible! Unfortunately without a set of answers I may be forced to delete your find. Thank you for understanding and please reach out if you have any questions!Very Respectfully,STNolan
  24. V 8.34.0 I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong but when I receive new cache notifications this morning, I can open the new traditionals with the app but when I try to open the new puzzle cache it does not take me to the correct page. It only goes to the correct page when I use my browser. If it's something I'm doing wrong on my end I can't figure it out. And I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the title of the puzzle cache does start with an emoji.
  25. Nothing changed as far as the way I use my email. Gmail using the web browser. I actually thought it was pretty clever that this worked in the first place but now it seems not to be. It wants to open the cache page via the web rather than the app. I think this started happening in the last week or so. I don't see any settings that would be relevant.
