  1. Those people are actually having emails sent to their phones, not SMS text messages. Or some of them may have come up with an elaborate scheme to have their email application send out a text message. Either way, as I'm sure you know, new cache notification emails don't contain cache coordinates anyways. You can receive the first 140 characters of a cache page via a text message, but I don't know if that includes the coordinates. When I was playing around with the textmarks, probably the coolest thing you could do with it was receive decrypted cache hints via text. Just used it the other day actually. Works good, and very fast.
  2. While this is true, the problem lies in that SMS has a limited amount of characters. By the time you get the header from the email, etc, tghe message becomes no more than a "hey, check your email" message. While you need to do that anyway on a IN, depending on what I am doing I may not care about it if it is too far away for me to go for at that moment for the time I have. 3 miles is different than 15 when you only have 30 mins between appointments.
  3. 1. Get a Blackberry or similar mobile Email device so you get the notification Emails straight away, even if you're not at your computer. 2. If you don't have a mobile Email device get a mail system that sends you an SMS text to your phone whenever the notification mail comes in. If you're on an Orange mobile you can set this up for free - you don't even pay the "standard text" charge (PM me if you want details); I believe you can do it with other systems for a small charge.
  4. Thanks for the email to sms tip... I was unaware of that.
  5. Where can you set up cell phone (SMS) notifications? I see an option to use email notifications and I have a few set up, but nothing about cell phone notifications.
  6. Some mobile providers have a email->SMS gateway, just send an email to a certain address and it'll forward to you via text. I can't remember full details of which UK providers have it.

    Here's a list of SMS gateways. http://www.mutube.com/projects/open-email-...s/gateway-list/

Most cell phone sms plans have an email address attatched to them, usually something like: 2223334444@text.provider.com Who is your provider? Someone here will probably know the specifics for your provider.
  9. They are getting to my cell phone only due to additional payments I have to pay for each SMS, converted from email by my provider. And what I get is a lot of character-jam with the name of a new cache. I can't look up the listing page, while I'm on tour, since I don't have internet-access in my car.
  10. Ditto to everything said above. I'm loving using my Verizon Curve with CacheBerry (can't switch from Verizon - wish the GPS wasn't locked). When I'm done with my day's caching, I have CacheBerry email me the Field Notes. Save 'em to my pc's hard drive, upload them to here and then go through and log the caches. It works very well for me. Also, you can use SMS to get basic cache info and log a Found or DNF in the field without hitting the website. Look here.
Do logbook branquinho.
  12. You can get notifications right now directly via SMS. Just use an appropriate email address. Find your provider in the list, then substitute your phone number into the address format. Specify this email address on the Notifications Form.
  13. These quick FTFers are probably receiving SMS notifications on their cell phones, which get sent pretty much immediately after the Reviewer publishes them. To do this, set up a notification as described above, and use this list (as previously posted by Motorcycle_Mama) T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com Cingular: phonenumber@cingularme.com Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com Nextel: phonenumber@messaging.nextel.com Alltel: phonenumber@message.alltel.com US Cellular: phonenumber@email.uscc.net SunCom: phonenumber@tms.suncom.com Powertel: phonenumber@ptel.net AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net where phonenumber = your 10 digit phone number Cheers,
  14. I used the SMS for logging caches several times and it worked very well. But not it is not working. I sent an email to TPTB but they were un-helpful. Too bad, it was a cool system.
  15. There's no SMS. You need to enter the email for your phone. http://www.sms411.net/2006/07/how-to-send-...l-to-phone.html
  16. If oyu are with verizon, you will need to use phonenumber@vzwpix.com so your message does not get truncated. The same with the other carriers. You want to use their MMS service not the SMS. Your carriers web site or customer service should be able to tell you that email.
  17. From Markwell's site ... Markwell – Used in the forums only. To “Markwell” is to respond to a message with a link to another thread where the posted question has already been answered. Named after the geocacher Markwell. --------- Anyhow, I would like the coordinates as well, but as was mentioned, previously threads would seem to indicate that's not going to happen. I use a Blackberry nowadays, so I just send the email to my handheld and pull up the entire page, so it's not a major issue for me. However, I can understand why people who have just a regular cell phone relying on an SMS would want the coordinates. -jk I think it's a great idea that's been asked for before but they said no because they want you to visit the web site. If I had the motivation I'd try to Markwell... but I don't.
  18. After so many years, and we're finally to a point where many use other OSes which aren't windows only to find myself disappointed. There are cross platform toolkits out there, and yet Wherigo builder is only for windows. For something really popular, I find it meaningless unless its going to be written in a portable manner. Yes this is possible using cross platform toolkits like Qt or Wxwidgets. One of the mods brought up about maintaining different projects if there were many, well there wouldn't be any hassle if Wherigo player and builder were open source and used a cross platform toolkit in the first place. The project would in fact fix issues much sooner and support linux/mac/windows. There is no excuse, period. So no, I won't be buying a Colorado until I see other OSes supported. I'll stick to sending the cache data to my cellphone via SMS/Email, since its true paperless caching.
  19. You dont have a sms email adress its just your number.Idont think you can.
  20. Why not just install Memory Map on the PPC and don't bother with the Garmin? Either get a PPC with a built in GPS, such as a Mio p350/550 a701, or my HTC Kaiser/TYTN II or get an even cheaper PPC with Bluetooth and get a GPS mouse. The Garmin unit that you have all recommended so far does not do half the things the OP asked for. Does it play mp3s? Connect to a PC wirelessly? Does it do turn by turn satnav (may do I'm not sure)? Can you get full cache info from it like you can with Cachemate? Do you get a display like this below? On which when you select a cache you get this: In addition to the things the OP asked for, he would also be able o send & recieve email, make phone calls, send SMS, have full HTML internet access via 3g, Edge, HSDPA, GPRS or wifi, play games, edit MS Office documents, sync his outlook calender & contacts and install whatever different apps or games he chooses. Well Ive looked and they appear to be about £450 quid + (can`t seem to find one at 275 ) ok if you `ve got the disposable income but hang on ! doesnt the new garmin do the paperless caching thing as well .... and unless you are a gadget junkie ; most folks will have changed their mobile for something small and discreet, not a blinking big lump like this , hmmmmmm and if they`re on Ebay (cheap) that says to me that people are not too happy with them, if they were that good you wouldn`t be avble to get one for love or money , Hmmmmmm

  23. I've been geocaching for just a short time now, however, it is readily apparent to me that there is a significant number of geocachers who thrive on completing a "First To Find" (FTF). Because of this demand, I think there is a market for the web site to offer an "expanded service" which provides the following benefits for an extra $10 a year: Early notification (2 hours?) of New caches (via email and SMS) Members would get a graphical symbol next to their name indicating their status Members who greatly value obtaining a FTF would be drawn to this because of the significant notification advantage. For the rest of the population who could care less about obtaining a FTF, the lag time in notification would not make a difference. Furthermore, if you are on a budget you could target a specific month - say June - to achieve your FTF. In that case, you could go with the monthly option of $3 a month. Now, this is just a proposal. I'm not affiliated with the site by any means. In fact, I don't even know if this idea was proposed in the past. What I am trying to do is discover what the general population feels about this. Why? Because I think the site can use those extra funds to make improvements to the website and increase the general population's knowledge of geocaching. Remember, the ultimate goal is to provide those who subscribe to the expanded service with an advantage of learning first when a cache is made available. It will not provide them with any additional information. They'll just get the same information sooner.
  24. A found is a found! I don't care if someone find my cache by accident or 'cause he jumps over a fence of a closed park (by hell, you'll get 5 years of jail for such a law break ;-D ). So should I also delete FTFs 'cause the cacher is noticed by email-2-SMS instantly and not by looking up new caches manually or informed by the weekle non-premium newsletter?! Again: A FOUND IS A FOUND ! Happy hunting, Martin
  25. Chuy!

    FTF

SMS = Short Message Service It's a communications protocol for text messaging; most cell phones support it. Send your cell phone a text message from another phone or through your email provider, and you'll know if you have it.
