This is not a "Getting Started" question, so I moved your thread to a more appropriate forum section. From a Reviewer's perspective, your proposal would give me nightmares. We already see people doing all sorts of creative things to get around the 528 foot proximity rule. Enabling them to simply choose "Large" as the cache size in order to skirt the rule just means that they can switch the size post-publication to achieve their "objective." How do I enforce the special rule for "Large" size caches only? These are fairly rare, by the way. Do I require a photo and verification that the container size meets the minimum standards? That will add time to the review process. What happens if I say that a 50 cal ammo box is a "Regular," not a "Large?" How do you know that this would "not be a hard change for the IT folks?" Do you have insight into the Reviewer toolbox, and specifically the Litmus Test module? It works great now, but it would be quite a change to the UI to call out "Large" size caches only, in addition to the underlying code for the exemption. What is the shorter separation distance you're advocating for? 400 feet? 200? In my experience, "Large" caches are either hidden way out in the woods, where muggles are less likely to come across them, or as gadget type caches at someone's residence where there is less likelihood of a cache saturation issue. Micros out in the woods, where a Large might be hidden, tend to be frowned upon. If micros in the woods are prevalent in your area, perhaps the better path might be to hide more non-micro caches in the woods and encourage others to do the same.

Hallo Accu, der Unterschied zwischen aktiviert/unaktiviert ist ein bisschen wir genutzt/ungenutzt. Da man Coins eigentlich immer aktivieren kann (wenn man den Aktivierungscode hat ;-)), sind sie unaktiviert als "Neumodell" tendenziell etwas wertvoller als Sammelobjekt, aber natürlich unaktiviert auch zu nichts anderem zu gebrauchen. Es kann schon sein, dass so eine Serie einen gewissen Sammlerwert hat, wenn sie heute nicht mehr hergestellt werden. Es gibt ja manche Cacher(innen), die Coins sammeln und die zahlen da vielleicht schon ein paar Euro dafür. Reich wirst du aber nicht werden. :-( Eine gute Richtlinie, was die Coins wert sind, wäre für mich, was du selbst bezahlt hast. Ich nehme an, dass du die Coins vor Kurzem geholt hast und nicht schon 10 Jahre rumliegen hast - Wertsteigerung passiert hier höchstens über die Zeit, wie gesagt, zum Beispiel, wenn die Coins nicht mehr hergestellt werden. Wenn du die vier Coins vor Kurzem für sagen wir mal 50 Euronen gekauft hast, dann würde ich jetzt nicht damit rechnen, dass du sie für 200 wieder verkaufen kannst. Was hast du denn - Größenordnung! - bezahlt? Normalerweise würde ich vorschlagen, bei deinem Plan zu bleiben, aktiviere sie, nimm sie zu Events mit, zeige sie Freunden - dann haben die Coins einen gewissen Sinn. Ich nutze Tracking-Codes schöner Coins auch gerne als Gimmicks zum Entdecken in meinen Caches. Ansonsten würde ich mal schauen, ob du Geocoin-Sammler-Foren oder Facebookgruppen oder so etwas zu dem Thema findest. I live in a pretty cache dense area - and yet, over the past year and a half several new cachers have appeared, and a few have hidden several new caches. There are still lots of spots available - and not all cachers even WANT to hide and maintain caches of their own. Those that do enjoy hiding are able to find spots. Yes, we do have a few "prolific" hiders, but not all that many, and they. by no means, take EVERY available spot. There's lots of room for those who want to place a cache. I very much doubt that limiting each cacher to a specific # of hides will "throw open the game to more people who wish to place a cache of their own". If someone truly wants to lplace a cache, they will find a place. Limiting the # of caches any one individual can place to a specific # is not likely to "allow more people to join the game" - the number of caches any individual can place, and maintain, is inherently self-limiting. Each cacher is different. I have 17 hides, with a few more in the works. For me, that's about all I want to manange. Others who have more time and resources may have 100, or 200 hides to manange, and that works for them. The local community (different in every town, or area) knows who the hiders are and how they maintain (or don't maintain) their caches. Reviewers see patterns and may limit a cacher's ability to place new caches. A concrete, specific # simply is not a workable solution. This ^^^^^

And I will be the first to agree, BUT it was certainly time well spent. Lee, that must have taken much more time than I have EVER SPENT on a single Waymark, save for one notable one (notable only to me because of how much time it took to bring to fruition). So, you get a heap of kudos from me for all the time and effort you have obviously put forth to create that map. I've already bookmarked it. BUT, as time passes, people will tend to move about, thereby somewhat muddying the waters, even yours. I see at least one (lemme go back and peek at the map one more time)... ... yes, just one, is now about 200 km. off. Not your fault, just that, as I said, people do move around. No, I'm not going to help you out and expose the inexactitude. After all, you, yourself, profess to have plenty of time to track it down. NB - the km. should be a BIG hint. Doesn't the % FPs say more? 8 FPs on a hide with 200 finds is not as convincing as 8 FPs on a cache with 10 finds.

Does this count as user-configurable? (If you Inspect Element, change the "value" of one of the <option>s to 200, ensure that the modified <option> is selected, and then press "Go", the change is persistent across refreshes.) (I suspect that this might get fixed soon, now that I've pointed it out.) (Oops) (Hopefully they add an "proper" option to the settings.)

I just returned from a fantastic trip to Iceland, involving active volcano watching, glorious sunshine and fantastic landscapes, and dense, superwet fog. Fab caching overall. I also spend quite a long time on developing, testing and building the caches. For most of the more difficult ideas I also try to get someone testing it. The most extreme cache to date is GC8YEYQ, an online mystery with a dedicated website. It has 22 questions and puzzles to be solved embedded in a story of a young woman losing her memory. The outdoor part is "just" a 2 stage multi with a really big box and some surprises. The time spend on this is really hard to estimate, but even before the publish it was far more than 200 hours for me alone developing the software, selecting and processing the images, sounds and music. Additionally we need to take into account the efforts of developing the story done by my geocaching partner. We had two teams for beta-testing the online part and the outdoor part. Unfortunately, we had to move the final at one point and therefore we re-did the beta as well. But that's not all...such a complex website needs maintenance. We experiences some glitches that had to be fixed and add another 100 to 200 hours for that and for also for our monitoring tools. Sounds like work? Not at all. It is such a rewarding and fun thing that I love spending the time! All the requests for help, that we love to answer for the perspectve of this poor woman, it's fun! And most cachers write really lovely and long logs. Unfortunately: only available in German :-(

Yes, there are something like 4000 caches in the Sydney region, of which I've found a bit over 200, but I really don't like driving in Sydney - if the traffic isn't bad enough, a few decades of "urban consolidation" means parking is almost impossible to find once you get where you're going - so most of my Sydney caching has been by public transport, either on the train or the Broken Bay ferry. COVID has also added another perspective, particularly after I narrowly avoided being caught up in the Northern Beaches lockdown just before Christmas, having visited the area just a week before it all started. Most of my cache-finding this year has been in the Newcastle region and, looking at the map, I've probably gotten through about two-thirds of the caches available there: The rest should keep me going for a few more years I guess before I start having to go further afield, but I'm also reasonably content for cache-finding to play a diminishing role in my participation in the game, with CO duties, group hikes and events filling the gap. I expect that trend to continue.

100 miles is not enough; too bad you can't increase that. That's why I liked the "old" search; you could get into the URL and up the distance to 200 miles (or whatever), which gives me Wichita and the DFW area (from OKC).

Separated by miles? They are everywhere! The closest ones here have starts 200 meters apart, and these two are 300-400 meters from the planned Mega! BTW, "separated by miles" doesn't sound very far apart. Add a bunch of stages to that.

Kann ich für meine Familie zumindest nicht bestätigen. Meine Kinder wandern durchaus gerne, was sie aber extrem nervt ist wenn man alle 161 (oder 200 oder 300) m stehen bleibt um eine Dose zu suchen. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass ich solche "Runden" alleine machen muss.

Nöh, das halte ich nicht für merkwürdig. Eher für ein wenig einseitig formuliert. Der Pfeil und das Nachlaufen wird ja mit nem Ziel, an dem es was zu sehen und/oder einem anderen Mehrwert dabei hat nicht schlechter - sondern besser. Und natürlich ist der schöne Weg ja auch schon mehr als "Pfeil nachlaufen und Döschen entdecken". Wenn man sich da aber alle 200 Meter bücken muss und dann zuhause 50 Logs schreiben, sind da ziemlich viel unnötige Begleiterscheinungen dabei - und so sehen Dosen und Logs eben auch aus - reduziert. Der Weg bzw. das Führen der Leute darüber erfordert das aber nicht. Das geht auch anders. Gruss Zappo

What is the game coming to? This premium member joined almost a year ago and has made over 200 finds but has never visited the website and clearly has no idea that there's such a thing as a Needs Maintenance log, or if they do they can't figure out how to log one on the app.

Recently I was caching with a friend an we found a cache that was quite nice, but not really worth a full favourite. We said to each other: Wouldn't it be nice to be able to award millifavourites. So my request to split up favourites in to one thousand millifavourites (mFav). This will give us the possibility to give 1/2 (500 mFav), 1/3 (333 mFav), 1/4 (250 mFav), 1/5 (200 mFav) 1/6 (167mFav) etc. favourites. Tc

Ein echter Cacher ist der, der das alles so sieht - und tut - wie ich. Nöh, natürlich Quatsch, sorry. Eigentlich kann ich da ja jetzt nur verlieren - selbst wenn ich das irgendwie mit sprachlichen Mitteln einigermassen in die Reihe kriege, kann man da natürlich immer bei irgendeinem Begriff, Redewendung o.ä. "ja, aber......" sagen. Aber ich versuchs mal Zuallererst muss man - um eventuellen Missverständnissen zuvorzukommen - wohl beschreiben, was das NICHT ist. Es zielt da nicht auf Cachearten ("Mysterys/Multis/Tradis sind grundsätzlich doof"), auch nicht auf die Frage, ob jemand lange oder kurze Logs schreibt, ob jemand viele oder wenige Cache gefunden oder versteckt hat und auch nicht, ob man Caches vom Thema (oder an Location) X lieber hätte als Y oder andere Vorlieben. Man kann nicht alles, es interessiert einen nicht alles - aber das andere kann trotzdem ein toller Cache sein. Und - VOR ALLEM ANDEREN - ist das keine Wertung der Person. Ich kenne viele, die belanglose Caches in viel zu hoher Zahl hinter die belanglosesten Büsche werfen - aber die mag ich gerne, freue mich, wenn ich die draussen mal sehe und/oder trink mit denen auf nem Event meist zuviele Schorle und rede Blödsinn. Und wenn ich mal über so einen Cache mitten auf dem Waldweg auffinden, werde ich versuchen rauszukriegen, wo der hingehört und den wieder deponieren - oder ich nehm den mit und benachrichtige den Owner oder leiste bei Bedarf erste Hilfe. Es ist ein gemeinsames Spiel - und ein "das ist m.Es nicht wirklich gut, was Du da machst" genügt ja nicht zur Ablehnung der Person und auch nicht zur Aufweichung des spielerischen Miteinanders. Das ist eher so wie der Kumpel, der beim Kicken vorne aber wirklich NIE abgibt. So - und jetzt ein wenig Geschichte. Angefangen hat das (deutlich vor mir) bei GC auf der ersten Seite mit dem Anliegen, Caches an interessante Orte zu legen. Die zu teilen. Step one "Location, Location, Location" und "wenn der Cache der einzige Grund ist, die Leute hinzuführen - such nen anderen Ort." Das kombiniert mit der "Presseerklärung" Cachen ist Abenteuer und Erlebnis usw. - da war die Absicht und der Antrieb denn doch klar - und vor allem war das den meisten Mitspielern eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Da war ein Powertrail, ja sogar Caches hintereinander vom selben Owner VERBOTEN .Wurden nicht veröffentlicht. Um dem auszuweichen (und anscheinend der Hyperaktivität ein Ventil zu geben) , begannen dann manche, in einigen Wäldern die Fields of Fame anzuleiern - quasi ein PT immer von einem anderen Owenr - wechselseitig gelegt. War zwar auch eher flach - aber nur ne Randerscheinung. Und dann fiel das mit dem PT-Verbot. Und ab da gabs zigmal soviele Caches - und zig neue Cacher, die DAS als Cachen betrachteten - und deshalb da weitermachten (ob PT oder einfach Petling hinter Baum 14, weil hier mnoch keiner liegt) , was wiederum ähnliche Leute anzog. Die dann auch .... und und und..... Und da simmer jetzt. Und jetzt wirds schwer Ich versuch mich mal an einem nur halb passenden (- aber mein Lieblings - ) Beispiel. Wenn ich mich dazu entschliesse, bei den Modellsegelfliegern mitzumachen, dann ist es doch eher selbstverständlich, dass ich daran arbeite, dass mein Flieger in die Luft kommt, dass ich vielleicht irgendwann nen besseren habe, oder den, den ich habe, irgendeinen Ticken besser oder schöner oder eigenartiger mache oder das Ding ein bisschen besser fliegen kann . Kurz - ich strenge mich da an, das zu beherrschen, das so gut zu machen, wie ich kann. Und mich nicht damit begnügen, dass ich nen Clubausweis habe und nen Papierflieger basteln (oder "über den Wolken" pfeifen ) kann. Und vor allem - das muss mir doch niemand SAGEN! Es ist ein selbstgewähltes Hobby - und da ist das doch ist doch das selbstverständlich. Das mag in der Realität bei 3 von 10 Punkten stehenbleiben, weil ichs nicht besser hinkriege - aber das ist völlig egal. Ich hab mich "angestrengt" und versucht, ein wenig was rauszuholen. Das sehe ich beim Cachen in weiten Teilen nicht mehr. Wenn die Dose ein irgendwo hingelegter Mikro ist, wo man dann geschwind die Koordinaten nimmt, zwei Zeilen lang ein "da war noch Platz" - oder "das ist meine liebste Hunderunde" Listing textet und damit den Reviewprozess unfallfrei durchläuft (und bei ner Runde oder PT da gerne immer dasselbe ausser der Nummer) , dann ist das zwar theoretisch ein Cache - aber eigentlich ist das eben kein Produkt eines Cachers*. Es gibt ja ausser der berühmt/berüchtigten "Location" ja noch andere Dinge, wo man sich anstrengen kann - das hat sich auch sinnvollerweise in Richtung "Erlebnis" entwickelt - ob das nun das Erreichen der Dose oder das Lösen einer Aufgabe oder das Aufbauen eines Technikspieles oder ein freches Versteck oder ne gebastelte Dose oder oder oder sein. Aber halt nicht das maximal denkbare Minimum. Und ich verstehe auch nicht, das man da draussen zig wirklich tolle Dosen mit Erlebnissen und Locations und Mehrwert präsentiert kriegt und legt dann selbst etwas gerade so knapp über den Grundbedürfnissen. Und das ist für mich auch - abseits Kritik an manch anderem - die grösste Empfindung : Unverständnis. Es ist ja keine Pflicht, Dosen zu legen. OK, man kann sagen, vielen ist das genug - Liste runterladen, hintraben, ein wenig Dose suchen und finden, Stempel oder Kürzel rein, auf dem Gerät das voreingestellte E-Log losschicken - und weiter. Und am Ende steht da sogar manchmal ein schöner Weg und ein Erlebnis, der aus dem Cachetag und dem Draussensein mit den Kumpels besteht. Aber das ist nicht ein Erlebnis beim Cache. Und um DAS gehts eigentlich. Und das ist bei ganz wenig "Mühe" möglich und leicht. Wir reden hier nicht über einen hochkpomplizierten Multi und nicht über die Location "Zugspitze" - sondern eher die Location "guckt mal - eine riesige Eiche/ein kapellchen/ein alte Schleuse/whatever" - und das ist oft nur 50 Meter weg von dem Döschen der "Runde", die da geworfen wurde. Und man kommt als Sucher mit etwas mehr Wissen und Erlebnis nach hause als nur nach dem Piepsen sich einmal gebückt zu haben. Und das ist das Ziel - anderen was zu geben. Und wie schon gesagt - man muss das nicht erklären - es ist eigentlich selbstverständlich. Ich hab das mal scherzhafterweise das "Cacher-Gen" getauft. Man kapiert das wunderbare Spiel - und sofort drängen sich einem Möglichkeiten auf - da kann ich den Leuten den kleinen Weiher zeigen - da oben auf dem Hügel hätte ein Ortsfremder ne wunderbare Übersicht - ob jemand weiss, dass es hier eine Straussenfarm gibt - wir hatten doch hier mal das Geländespiel gemacht - mein Opa hat mir erzählt, da gäbe es.... bis hin zu "wenn man da was installieren würde, wo man dann das macht und dann das und dann passiert das..... Und lustigerweise haben 90 % der Muggels, denen man was vom Cachen erzählt, genau die selben Reflexe. Auf den Gedanken, alle 200 Meter einen Petling zu legen oder ne Runde zu bedosen nur um der Dose - in den Wald rein, hinten rum und wieder zurück, kommen nur Leute, die "cachen gehen ". Vielleicht ist ja DAS der Unterschied. So mir reichts - ich hätte doch meinen Schreibbmaschinenkurs fertig machen sollen Gruss und bis bald im Wald Zappo *ausser, damit wäre die Spitze seiner Leistungsfähigkeit erreicht - dann wäre das voll ok.

Well I installed the app today. Did a first adventure lab nearby. And then found out that this totally screwed up my Geocache-Score. Gladly found out how to delete the adventure lab logs. How dumb is it, to score 5 points for one (!) adventure? This AL I did, was nice and easy. Maybe 200 metres for all 5 stations... Now I need to decide, to give the app another try with a different or new account or to wait and see, until this bug is corrected and fixed. But seeing my real geocaching-score getting screwed up big time was really annoying.

No! No! No! No! No! Those devices are ancient. They require special cables. They aren't inherently geocaching compatible. And they don't really give you a taste of how modern GPS units function. If you are going to take the legacy route, go no farther back than the oldest models that support USB mass storage mode, gpx file support, and paperless geocaching. The eTrex 20/30, the Oregon 200/300, the (defunct) Colorado series, or the gpsMap62. Those are the oldest models we should be recommending to new users looking to save on a GPS. Anything else is like recommending your grandparents buy an Apple IIe as their first computer in 2021.

I am member of a geocaching telegram group where other members were discussing this new "trend" only recently. I couldn't imagine why owners would have to create such an ALC until exactly one of those was released in my area (Central Germany) a few days ago. The first stage is 35 km away from me, the next one is located 200 km north. One is 300 km further west, one is in the Netherlands and one on a tiny island in the ocean near Montenegro! I asked the owner what his intention is and whether players would have to travel to all of these places. His answer was: "You don't have to. Nobody forces you." I don't understand the owner's intention or the point of ALCs like this. In my opinion, it is impossible to complete them without fake GPS.

Die Meinung darf er auch haben, OHNE irgendeinen Cache gefunden zu haben. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass seine Meinung wirklich als gewichtig empfunden wird, ist halt grösser, wenn er das als wirklich erfahrener Aktiver "aus dem Spiel" heraus macht. Ich unterstelle mal :), dass HHL das meinte. Das ist eben nicht dasselbe. Wobei so am Rande - jedesmal, wenn ich mit nem völlig cachefernen Muggel so übers Cachen ins Erzählen komme, kommt der mit "ha, dann könnte man doch......" und da sind dann immer bessere und gehaltvollere Ideen dabei als vieles, was da draussen so rumliegt und die Idee, entlang eines stinknormalen Waldwegrunde alle 200 Meter eine Dose hinzulegen, ist Lichtjahre weit weg. DAS fällt tatsächlich niemand ein, wenn es um Möglichkeiten geht, was das Speil so bietet. DAFÜR muss man schon Cacher sein Gruss Zappo

I don't know whether there's anything similar in other parts of the world, but here (New South Wales, Australia), for outdoor gatherings above the freely-allowed limit (currently 200 people), the organisers can complete and lodge a COVID-safe plan which then allows up to 5000 people.

Remember that in a reddit post that there were over 200 million players as of March 2021. Could be right or wrong.

The trackable situation is kinda grazy at the moment. I´m relatively new with 78 finds and 8 Tb´s moved so far, but I saw a lot of Tb´s dissappeared, some were logged at a different cache. I write many notes for missing Tb´s (one of them was discovered again after months a couple of hundred kilometers away from the last known location), I saw a cacher who allegedly took a Tb to more than 100 caches in one!!! day, other cachers dip them every 200 meters for weeks or months, a Tb hotel near my hometown with 7 Tb´s in it got compleatly emptied, you name it. I want to send one or two Tb´s out myself, but oh boy. This really makes me wonder, if it´s a good idea to make the Tb´s / Gc´s a premium member only thing.
