  1. Hi, new to geocaching and need to buy a handheld. These two are similarly priced but which would be best for my new hobby? Can either be used to navigate in a car? Am UK based but will be visiting USA and Canada soon. Will the basemaps cover these areas or do I need to purchase more maps so I can hunt caches over the pond? Thanks Mike
  2. I have a brand new Garmin Oregon 200 GPS that is brand new still in sealed box for sale. I ordered one and then got one for Christmas, so instead of returning the item, I am going to give a fellow GC'er a chance to purchase. I also will include a brand new 4GB MicroSD card that is loaded with all Topo2008 maps in USA. Will sell it all packaged & shipped via FEDEX to lower 48 for $305.00 --- I accept Paypal, and I am an active Geocaching member. Hope this helps someone move up to this great line of GPSr units & get out there! Saintroad
  3. I was wondering if you could load geocaches on this unit through the SD card slot and if so how hard would it be to get them to work . Thanks
  4. I went to best buy and they didn't have the data cable, besides the associate was really rude, he pointed and said, they should be over there. So far this GPS has been working great for me but I want to be able to load coordiantes and maps from the computer.
  5. Did anyone have any problems with their triton 200 (Or any other triton/Magellan)? Mine, when I disconnected it from my comp today (after being plugged in but not connected for a 24 hour period) shows nothing except where the time should be (--:--), where the signal should be (Its blank, even after sitting for an hour), and the power in the battery (its reads this accurately.) All the rest is blank. I have tried to hit all the buttons and get no response. I tried taking the batts out for an hour or so to see if it "resets" or anything and get the same thing. And nothing I do changes it. I can't even turn it off. Any help out there for me? thanks fer any help
  6. I have been away from Geocaching for a few years and the family is recently getting back into it. What I have currently is an eTrex Legend (the blue one). I used to have a Palm to do paperless caching but the Palm has since died. Here is why I am considering the 200 and maybe someone can point out why I should spend the extra $$$ on the 300 or 400t or on something else completely different altogether... Basically, all I really want to do is paperless Geocaching with it. I'm not a hiker so I don't need Topo maps or electronic compasses and such, I'm not big on turn-by-turn navigation (sue me... I like to plan my geocaching expeditions on paper maps, plus I have OnStar for that in the rare instance I need it for other purposes). I do however like to turn on the GPS and have it track where I went and upload the tracks to Google Earth and whatnot for giggles, but I can do that with any GPSr. Here is why I am leary... I also want to have the ability to mount it to my motorcycle handlebars so I can see when I am getting close enough to park and start the hunt when I am soloing, but I see a lot of people moaning about the screen in bright sunlight. I have also seen the PN-40 and it looks good but promises of coming true paperless caching and actually already having it are two different things. Also seen a lot about very short battery life with it. Anyone who can shed any light on the above? It's a big purchase so I want to make the right one.
  7. New to this, however been using my Nuvi 255w recently for geo and works well...sort of. Was hoping somebody could lead me to a decent hand held unit with the features that I've been reading about (compass, ability to add maps, etc....please help. Any other advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. Found a few today! -Scott
  8. hey folks, need to ugrade from my blue legend, so what would you say is the best garmin gpsr for under 200 bucks. thanks.
  9. At the end of next month we are going on a long holiday (vacation) and expect to find maybe 200 plus caches. What options do people use for when you get back from a trip with a heap of caches to log?? I've been playing with the GSAK macros CachmateLogging and PPC_CachemateLog but I can't get either of them to work as I am not that computer literate. Are there any other methods that people use that might be easier to learn (other than a boring cut and paste log that is the same for each cache!) Annie
  10. My parents just gave me this unit for Christmas. Just went out to play with it on my first adventure and didn't find it. Guess I need a little practice reading the maps. At one time I was away from the "flag" on the map of the gps and it said I was within 30 feet of the coordinates. But yet the map on Geocaching.com shows the cache to be across the street. Hummm. Any help or hints on finding a cache would be great. Anyone else have a Garmin nuvi series system? The person at the store said a LOT of hunters and what not come in to get that particular model for finding their way in the woods.
  11. I'll give this a shot here. I have an explorist 200, used. Error- "Unit Currently Contains No Maps! Intiating Map Upload" No matter what I do I can't get past this screen. I have a 4 pin cable that connects to the PC via a USB port. I have tried the Prolific USB drivers...to no avail. I have tried every secret handshake out there. Only one combination does anything. Menu-Enter then Power. When I do that I get "Software Upload Mode Active". I am really at wits end here. I talked to Magellan support today... They're not interested in supporting older units. I've downloaded what I think are the right base maps. Basemap.mgi and/or NAbm112.mgi The unit is used...(you guessed it...ebay). I have no CD...but do have a 210 CD from a friend. If there is anyone that can help me fix this...please let me know. I really just want to go exploring...as opposed to re-engineering a gps unit. Thank you, God Bless, Merry Christmas SoloCraft
  12. New at this, try again: My old Rhino 120 went on the blink and I needed a new unit right away for a trip. I let myself get talked into a Garmin 200. I found two things problematical right away. 1. There is no map page. This is very useful to me, because I want to see the UTM coordinates change as I move. I want to see, for example, when I cut the east-west coordinate of a way point as I drive a road. From there I know the shortest distance that I can efficiently walk to to get to the point. 2. The unit only stores about 50 of the nearest way points in the "Manage Way Points" screen. How can I "Manage Way Points" if I cannot get to them on the screen? It is possible by using the map function, but too much trouble. If I am missing anything here, someone please let me know. Perhaps there is an insight that I have missed. If you have the same problems, let me know, as well. It appears that Garmin has tried to make their new units more user friendly, but in so doing, have dropped some important features. I think the 60CSX would have been a better choice.
  13. I am interested in starting to hunt geocaches. I want to buy either a garmin nuvo 200 or 200w portable gps with 3.5" touchscreen. Will either of these gps units work for geocaching?
  14. Ok, sorry. I posted earlier wanting to upgrade my Yellow Garmin Etrex to something that keeps a really excellent signal under tree cover (mine is really awful), and has maps. Now I've decided I must have paperless caching as well. What do you recommend? I'd like to spend $150-200, and I don't mind refurbished or used. I've heard good things about the Delorme PN-20, but i know there is an 800 character limit, is that going to be lifted on the PN-20 too? Based on wanting a paperless and in my price range is there even anything else I should be looking at? Thanks again!
  15. I have maps I've custom-made that I use with my Garmin eTrex Venture (hydrology, contour, land-cover, etc). Are they compatible with the Nuvi? Does it also use Mapsource? Wal-mart has the Nuvi 200 on sale tomorrow (black Friday) for $99, and I'm considering grabbing one for the car.
  16. So what with the $50 Garmin Colorado rebate and EMS' Colorado 300 $250 price until Dec. 1st, considering getting one. In reading GO$Rs Colorado Wiki he makes this statement: Since I don't use Garmin's dark colored Topo 2008, rather I use these maps I was hoping a Garmin Colorado owner might do a test. Download these Demo Maps and compare the forest green to the same area on Topo 2008. Then I'll know if it inherent to the Colorado screen or Garmin's maps that make daylight viewing so difficult in bright sun. As a reference, I currently use a Venture Cx, its daylight map viewing is very good. So much so that I never use the backlight during the day. I also have a Nuvi 205W, impossible to view the same maps w/o heavy backlight. Thanks
  17. I have a 10-year old Magellan that I used for hunting and fishing. Old and slow. I started geocaching with my kids over the weekend. They love it. Spent all weekend (evenings) researching an excuse to get a new GPS. I think I want the Garmin Oregon. I definitely want color, I like the touchscreen, I want to be able to choos which maps I want, topo is very nice (I'm also an adventure racer, and although GPS's are a no-no it would be great for training). I want it to work well for: - hunting (mark deer stand, wander around, get back) - fishing (enter coordinates and go to) - geocaching (not really sure what I need, sounds like "paperless" geocashing would be nice). I am a techie-type person, but for the life of me after reading the reviews, specs, etc. on the 3 models (200, 300, 400) I can't find an answer to these questions. Please help. - Why is the amount of RAM important? They all store the same amount of waypoints and geocaches. - If the maps come on a separate card, what's the RAM used for? - If it's important, then I'd conclude the 300 is a better value considering how much more RAM it has for not much more $ (24Mb vs. 850Mb). - Does the 400 come with built-in maps or does it come with a map card? - If it's built-in, does that mean I can add a card and have multiple maps available at the same time, i.e buy the 400t and add a lake map? - Can I recharge the rechargeable batteries while in the GPS? Why don't they make these things rechargeable??? What a pain. Just like my walkie-talkies, cell phone, etc. I want to just plug it in to charge it. Basically, why would I buy a 200, 300 or 400 if the map cards are ~$100 each? Any help to a newbie would be greatly appreciated.
  18. I've been enjoying paperless caching but all of a sudden the geocaches aren't appearing on my Oregon 200? The Garmin Communicator tells me it is transfered successfully but it is not actually on the unit? Up until now loading has been a simple procedure. Any suggestions?
  19. We just got our Nuvi 200 in the mail today from Walmart.com No it is not a 205 I checked. Instead of the regular SD slot it has a microSD slot. No big deal as I have both size cards. I am wondering what other suprizes this little guy has. (Software version 4.50 BTW)
  20. I am selling my Magellan eXplorist 200 to upgrade to an sd compatible unit. It is in excellent shape, has the screen protector on it too. I can email pictures if you want. $40 plus shipping to lower 48.
  21. The only thing I can delete is waypoints but when I "send to gps" it doesn't show up in waypoints and I can't figure out how to delete the ones I've found and ones that I have decided not to try to find. I admit that I am not technically savvy so I sure could use some help.
  22. Could anyone give me advice on a magellan Triton 200 I am interested in purchasing one but I would like to hear from a few users first....
  23. Can you load GPX files on SD card to do paperless caching on a NUVI 200 Sd card instead of into favorites and will it work as well. Just received unit and looking at all the posts on Nuvi 200 I could find I didn't see any info on doing this. Using the latest GSAK. All help appreciated. I have DL the POi Loader Etc and looked at the tutorials ???? Thanks Chuck :[
