  1. As mentioned, there are many threads here on the subject. I keep Garmin Communicator running as a personal challenge, but it's a chore (on a Windows PC). But if you keep your computer updated, Garmin Communicator will break. If you don't, many features will break. For a Garmin GPSr, click the "GPS File" button on a cache page (NOT the "Send to My GPS" button) and place the GPX file into the /Garmin/GPX folder. It's the same folder you place Pocket Queries. Thanks all, that link was useful sort of. So if I want to do that I need firefox otherwise just need to download it then transfer to my GPS.
  3. When you are trying to download to the GPS are you using the communicator plugin (send to gps button) or saving gpx files to the gpsr (gpx button)? I have Windows 10 and the communicator plugin, it works fine for me in IE 11 (although you probably have to make sure that edge is not the default browswer). If you use the GPX button, both IE and Edge will save the gpx files files to your downloads folder (C:\, users, your name, downloads) where they can be copied over the garmin/gpx folder on your gpsr (assuming you are using a garmin unit that supports paperless caching and gpx files). I normally use firefox, which gives the setup option e to choose the folder where I want to download and save a file. I press the gpx button and save a file directly to my gpsr (again, the garmin/gpx directory of your device). I could also use the communicator - although some people report problems with the latter it is working fine for me.
  4. Since Garmin bought Delorme you will not be able to find anything regarding Delorme units. The removed and blocked anything Delorme. Delorme units have a duo core processor. Also not programed up the same way a Garmin is. Garmin can only have one file of GPX geocaches. Delorme can have multiple. Example: file name April hunt. In that file I could place 500 geocaches. May hunt. In that file another 500. I could place then in the unit with pocket query or the send to GPS button. If one of those geocaches were to have bad code such as a symbol.#&$¥£π¶. Those are examples then the hexadecimal 1A issue would wipe out a bunch of geocaches when you switch from one file to the other. Those symbols also could cause route calculation issues when you tell the unit to lock on to a geocacher and route to it. Now if you use the pocket query method to bring in a list of geocaches chest then some how the goofy symbols are converted and or deleted from the cache description. But not if you used the send to GPS method. The send to gps button is only supported in internet explorer. I know some will say also in a certain version if Firefox. But that version is scheduled to be eliminated. Delorme does not use the Garmin communicator. It uses the Delorme send to gps plugin. But due to that now not working I tried to place a gpx file(geocache) into an existing geocache file with others. Then when I opened that file, poof! 150 geocaches gone. But the cache that I had placed was there among the survivors. Maybe it is a good thing the send to GPS not work now. I have tried it on other computers that I know have the plugin. Windows 7, 8 and 10 using internet explorer. All do not. Work now.

  6. This is very true! I am a newcomer to Geocaching and I first tried to transfer some geocache to my GPS using the "Send to my GPS" key without success. I did many attempts but none reached the goal. I download Garmin Communicator (but it never is recognized as present onto my PC) Then I tried to use both Chrome and Internet Explorer I used both Windows 10 and Windows 7 My GPS is a Dakota 20. The only way had success is the one suggested by kunarion: Use the "File GPX" button instead of "Send to my GPS" button Then copy the GPX file from the PC to the GPX folder of the GPS unit. This works fine! Thank you kunarion!
  7. I've just now noticed that Chrome on my Win 8 laptop also does NOT have Fancy Menu. Chrome on Win 7 does. So I did a Browser Report for both. Java is different, and I may not be able to make them the same (guessing it's Java that causes the difference). There are a couple of other different plugins between the two systems. Here's my info for Chrome in Win 7, the browser that shows the new Fancy Menu: Shockwave Flash Shockwave Flash 11.8 r800 Chrome Remote Desktop Viewer This plugin allows you to securely access other computers that have been shared with you. 8. I don't think Edge supports Garmin Communicator. I am running Windows 10, and searching for a browser that I can use Communicator with (not Chrome, or Firefox, and IE isn't available with Win 10 since Edge replaced it C'MON GARMIN!!
  9. When it breaks in Windows 10, Garmin Communicator can go through all the motions, no errors, and all seems perfectly fine except for one small detail: The file doesn't arrive on the GPSr. That's what happened with mine. One quick way to know, is to click the button again. No errors, means no file conflict message, and therefore, the file was not sent to the GPSr. If the OP feels the need to mess around with finicky plug-ins, installing it in Firefox is the way to go. I tried the first "Garmin Communicator" suggested in FF's "Add-ons" list. I changed nothing else. Internet Explorer was trickier, requiring the addition of "Trusted Sites". That requires a whole new level of decisions: Just how many security features am I willing to disable, for the convenience of a button that I can do without?
  10. I'm having problems with sending GPX files to my GarmIn Oregon 550T since I have upgraded to Windows 10. I have the latest Garmin Communicator plugin! When I hit the "Send to my GPS" bottom, It sees MY GARMIN Oregon 550T, but when I tell it to write the GPX file it will not transfer the file to my GPS. I talked to Garmin support I they told me that the problem is with Geocaching.com site and not with their plugin. At the moment I'm downloading the GPX files to my computer and then dragging them to my Garmin GPX file. Any help would be appreciated since I did not have this problem with Windows 8.1 operating system.
  11. I have a Garmin Oregon 400t and use my laptop to transfer caches.I have a new laptop, runnng windows 8.When I "send to my Gps " I get the message that garmin communicator is not installed.I downloaded communicator and I am reliably informed it was successfully installed, however the cache still wont transferto my Gps. I had the same problem on my previous laptop, windows 7, and found I ould transfer using google as opposed to internet explorer.I have tried the same on this machine to no avail.Any ideas ? I normally select a cache, choose send to my Gps and I transfers, but,as I say, now the Gps is not found. On garmins website,my Gps is found if that means anything.
  13. Other than manually entering coordinates into your GPS there are basically three methods for getting cache data from the site to your GPS. The first, as you mention it to use the Garmin Communicator plugin. It does not work in all browsers as the technology it uses has been deemed to have a potential security vulnerability (that doesn't mean that the plugin is insecure). It also only allows you to send data to your GPS one cache at a time. The second method, as HHL and niraD describe is to download a GPX file (or LOC for a basic member) which contains cache data for one or more caches to your computer, then after plugging in the GPS to the computer, to copy the file to a folder on the GPS. This will not work for older GPS devices, and although the procedure for doing it is well documented, those with a Magellan, Delorme, or other GPS brand will need to find instructions on how to copy files to the GPS. The third option is to use a waypoint manager on your computer. The most common for Windows users is GSAK. GSAK *can* be run on a mac but requires jumping through some additional technical hoops. EasyGPS, and ExpertGPS (the latter being the paid version of the first) are a bit easier to use than GSAK but are also only for Windows. Garmin Basecamp has versions for both Windows and a Mac and can also be used for managing maps that can be sent to your GPS. There are other waypoint managers as we;; but all of them have a driver for sending *and* receiving waypoints to/from a GPS. They an can be used to manage a very large collection of waypoint and save all or a portion of them as a GPX file then copied to a GPS as mentioned in the second method. Superb, NYPaddleCacher! That makes a lot of sense. Many thanks for taking the time to respond. I will have a play about with Garmin Basecamp, methinks. Best wishes, Mace
  14. I've tried to send to my device, and get the message "Garmin Communicator Plugin not detected". So I click on download, Download complete. Message pops up says "You have Communicator Plugin" Devices detected = eTrex 10. I try to send to my device and message "Garmin Communicator Plugin not detected" I'm using Windows 8 Any suggestions
  15. I am about to pitch my Oregon 650t out the window. I cannot, *cannot* get it to accept geocache information, either individually from the cache page "send to gps" button, or through the "Send to Garmin" button on the lists page. Have tried both methods on both Windows and Mac computers. Have installed (and re-installed) Garmin Basecamp, Garmin Express, and Garmin Communicator. Have updated Mac OS. Have tried Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari. Seriously, it's maddening enough to make me want to quit the whole friggin' game...
  17. You didn't mention which Operating System you're using, but if it's Windows 10, you will use IE11 and not the default browser called "Edge". I got Garmin Communicator working in Windows 10 by following the steps here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334207&view=findpost&p=5538114 (I post a link since there are several things to consider when you do that) You may instead place GPX files directly into the GPX folder of a Garmin GPSr, thus bypassing the plugin. And you may have the file copied in a fraction of the time it takes to fix the plugin when it breaks. Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. (For a zipped Pocket Query, unzip the file, and you should now have at least one GPX file.) Plug the Garmin into the USB port of the computer. Find the Garmin as a [DRIVE] or [storage device] and open it; Therein, locate a file folder named something like Garmin/GPX/; Click, drag and drop (or copy) the downloaded GPX file(s) to that [DRIVE]:Garmin/GPX/ folder. Right-click and select Eject, unplug the Garmin; Go Geocaching. (From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions)
  18. Instaled Firefox browser. Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - said had to download Garmin Communicator. Again installed Garmin Communictor. Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - said Firefox did not accept plug-ins. Recommended downloading a patch to Internet Exporer. Downloaded patch. Tried sending a geocache to Garmin GPSr - again got message that Firefox did not accept plug-ins. Retried with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Internet Edge .... none accept plug-ins even though I keep downloading patch and clicking OK to run that plug-in. Wondering if I need to uninstall Windows 10 and go back to Windows 8.1. That would send o GPSr from Windows Explorer, not Chrome. Previous edition of Wndows would work from both Internet Eplorer and Chrome, but the computer died.
  19. Eerst even wat achtergrondinformatie: Garmin Communicator is een zgn. NPAPI-plug-in.
  20. If you want to convert GPX files into compact data to save space, you could load them as "POIs". Garmin has a "POI Loader", and although it's not specifically updated to run in Windows 10, supposedly it still works (or can be set up to work). The POIs have the cache name, coordinates, and a little info. The POI Loader has extra settings that can't be done with manually loading files, such as proximity alerts. Another simple way to load a Nuvi is to place the GPX file directly into its "Garmin/GPX" folder. In this case, you'll likely see the GC number for a title, the coords will load, and some cache text might display when you select a cache. It's not very efficient since you're loading an entire GPX file which may have a large Wikipedia article in it, yet you only see the few lines of text that the Nuvi is able to show. "Garmin Communicator" may or may not work on any given combination of hardware and software, so if "Send To GPS" doesn't work, use the "GPS File" button on a cache page instead. Click "Save As", and place the GPX file in the "Garmin/GPX" folder of the Nuvi. A Nuvi is for street routing. If you have a handheld device (such as a phone with an App, or a Garmin Etrex or whatever), you might be better off by placing a couple of strategically selected GPX files on the Nuvi (or type coords by hand) to get you into an unfamiliar area, to a parking spot, and loading all the caches onto the handheld device.
  21. Hello, I have a Garmin Etrex Venture HC. Using my DESKTOP computer, running Windows XP, I am able to send cache info to my GPS unit from the website using the "SEND TO MY GPS" button, works fine every time. My problem occurs when I try this from my LAPTOP running Windows 7. According to the Garmin Website I have the latest and most up to date Communicator plugin, it also recognizes my GPS unit, but every time I try to send cache info using "SEND TO MY GPS" geocaching.com gives me an error that says "Garmin Communicator Plugin NOT detected. Download and install now" I am using the same USB cable to plug into both computers so its not a cable issue. Am I missing something here? Do I need to reconfigure something in Windows 7? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
  22. On a cache page, paid members can click the GPX File button. Save the file in the /Garmim/GPX folder of the GPS receiver. You'll place unzipped Pocket Queries in a similar way, a better solution for most cachers than loading one cache at a time. You didn't mention which browser or operating system you're using. But especially if it's Internet Explorer in Windows 10, and if you wish to work on keeping Garmin Communicator functioning, see one of the many threads about the issue, such as this one: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334207&view=findpost&p=5538114 You can also load Communicator in Firefox. That seems to work without much trouble for now.
  23. Since upgrading to Windows 10 have been unable to transfer data to etrex20. Keeps saying Garmin communicator not compatable. Garmin suggest use IE 11 which I have but windows edge still wont allow. An advice greatfull appreciated.
  25. It's becoming a real challenge to keep Communicator working in current web browsers. But many people don't have Windows 10, or are using old browsers, and Communicator is currently working. For those people, "Send To" is fine. For the rest of us, we should move on to other things. I like copying manually, because I delete old files before saving new ones. It's a practice I learned from using a Garmin GPSr. If you get a Premium Membership, "Pocket Queries" are the way to go. The Garmin 450 is rugged, and with the latest firmware, it's pretty stable. I think you'll like it. I found a bunch of caches with that.
