  1. Hi since upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1 I've not been able to write GC information to my Oregon 200. Instead of the normal successfully saved I'm getting a file path. Works perfectly on our other 8.1 computer. Anybody else having similar problems?
  2. I loved my old computer with Windows 7, but it packed in and the new PC I purchased came pre-loaded with Windows 8 and IE version 11. A whole new learning experience caused me some frustration but downloading Windows 8.1 helped somewhat. However, for the life of me, I can't get Garmin's communicator plugin to work. After downloading, Garmin's webpage says I don't have the plugin installed and sure enough, I can't send cache info to my GPS. Any suggestions would be appreciated
  3. My wife's PC just quit, and I have another wit Windows 7. Hers was XP, I believe. Either way, I can't get the Garmin communicator plug in to download to my Windows 7. I've tried everything changing compatibility modes. Has anyone experienced this, and how are you getting around it? Is Garmin fixing the problem, as I've been unable to contact them? I would hate to think I have to change GPS devices to allow me to download caches. Thanks for any help.
  4. I have Firefox 40.0.3 installed and earlier today I was unable to use the Garmin Communicator Plugin, however once I followed the instructions below for Firefox, I was then able to use the Garmin Communicator Plugin. *** I have now updated to Firefox 41.0 and the Garmin Communicator Plugin is still working. I did not have to anything following the update to Firefox 41.0 *** I found this on the Garmin Knowledge Base - Link to Garmin Knowledge Base about Garmin Communicator Plugin Question: Why isn't the Garmin Communicator Plugin detected in my browser after installing it? Answer: In some instances, Internet browsers may state that the Garmin Communicator Plugin (CPI) is not installed after completing the steps to install the CPI. Before any troubleshooting is performed, verify that the browser meets the minimum requirements for the plugin. Supported browsers: PC - Internet Explorer 7+1, Firefox 3.6+, Safari 5+ Mac - Safari 4+, Firefox 35.0.1+ NOTE: Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are not compatible with the CPI. If the system requirements are met and the issue still occurs, download and install the plugin manually from the appropriate link: PC: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3607 Mac: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3739 If the issue still occurs, follow the instructions for the Internet browser being used: Internet Explorer (all supported versions) On pages that use the CPI, Internet Explorer may prompt for permission to use the plugin. Depending on the version of Internet Explorer, this prompt may appear at the top or bottom of the screen. It will say, "This website wants to run the following add-on". To allow the plugin to run, choose "Allow for all websites" or "Run add-on on all websites". If this prompt does not appear or does not allow the plugin to run: Make sure ActiveX Filtering is disabled: Press ALT+T on the keyboard If there is a check mark to the left of ActiveX Filtering, click ActiveX Filtering to disable it Restart Internet Explorer If still the plugin is still not detected, follow these instructions: Press ALT+T on the keyboard Click Manage Add-ons Under Show, select All Add-ons Verify that the Garmin Communicator Plugin and XML DOM Document are enabled: Select Garmin Communicator Plugin If it is disabled, click Enable Select XML DOM Document If it is disabled, click Enable Verify that the Garmin Communicator Plugin is being allowed on all websites: Right-click on Garmin Communicator Plugin Select More Information Click Allow on all sites Ensure the browser is set to default security settings for the Internet zone: Press ALT+T on the keyboard Click Internet Options Click Security tab Select Internet If the security setting for this zone is anything other than the default (Medium-high) return them to default: Click Default level Click Apply Click OK After following all of these steps, restart Internet Explorer. The CPI should work correctly now on this browser. Firefox Firefox blocks plugins by default, and will prompt to allow them on pages that use plugins. On these prompts, choose Allow, then Allow and Remember. Refreshing the page should then allow the plugin to load. To allow the plugin to load without prompting on each page: Open Firefox Press ALT+T on the keyboard (PC only) or click Tools Click Add-ons Click Plugins (on the left pane of the window) Set the control to the right of the Garmin Communicator Plugin to Always Activate Restart Firefox Safari (Mac) Safari blocks plugins by default, and will prompt to allow them on pages that use plugins. On these prompts, choose Trust. Refreshing the page should then allow the plugin to load. To allow the plugin to load without prompting on each page: Open Safari Click Safari in the menu bar Click Preferences Click Security Next to Internet plug-ins, click Manage Website Settings or Website Settings Highlight the Garmin Communicator Plugin In the dropdown menu next to When visiting other websites, select Allow Always Once the plugin has been allowed on the Internet browser, the Garmin Communicator Plugin should work properly. 1The full-screen Modern UI version of Internet Explorer included in Windows 8 does not support plugins, and therefore cannot be used with the CPI. Only the desktop version of Internet Explorer supports plugins. Last modified on: 09/10/2015
  5. Can someone help me get the Garmin communicator to work on my system? I'm sure there is some kind of security setting or something related that prevents it from working on my laptop. It runs fine on my old desktop with XP. Or, it did until the desktop died a couple of weeks ago. Running Windows 7 Home Premium, IE9, with Windows Live essentials running in the background. Trying to transfer data to my GPSV. Yeah, it's old, but it works fine for me. I've downloaded and installed the newest GC several times over the last couple of days, and absolutely can't get it to work. I've also checked my loaded DLL's and the GC dll shows as being loaded. I hate Windows 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  6. After many searches I have finally been able to get my Garmin to work with Windows 10. This is a step by step procedure of how I had to set up Windows 10 to do to get the Garmin to work with it. My Garmin is a 450. My following post will tell how to get the Caches to retrieve the Caches and load them to the Garmin. If you fiind this helpful, or have any suggested changes to the post, please let me know. Cache4Fun, 4evrCking ================== SETTING UP WINDOWS 10 TO WORK WITH GARMIN 450 The GEOCACHING.COM web site will NOT download to the Garmin GPS with Microsoft EDGE (which is the default browser for Windows 10). You must use INTERNET EXPLORER which comes with Windows 10 – you may want to put INTERNET EXPLORER on your opening screen. First you must set the SECURITY SETTINGS to allow access to the Garmin GPS – to do this: 1.Open INTERNET EXPLORER (not Edge) 2.Type in INTERNET OPTIONS in the search area of Windows 10. When the search results come up, select INTERNET OPTIONS CONTROL PANEL (top item). 3.Next select the SECURITY TAB 4.Then set the SECURITY LEVEL FOR THIS ZONE to MEDIUM HIGH 5.Then disable ENABLE PROTECTION MODE (remove the check mark in the box) Second, you must allow access to the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN and XML DOM – to do this: (NOTE: You may have to download the files, if you do, go to where Caches are normally downloaded to the GPS and select the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN - this will download the files you need.) 1.After you have the above files, go to the INTERNET EXPLORER SEARCH are and type in MANAGE ADD-ONS. When the search results come up, select MANAGE BROWSER ADD-ONS CONTROL PANEL (top item). 2.Next select MANAGE ADD-ONS (a box about 1/2 way down page) 3.ALL ADD-ONS should be in the SHOW box, if not select it and wait a few seconds while it searches for the ADD-ONS. 4.Look under the NAME field and select GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN. 5.The PLUG IN should be enabled, if not enable it. 6.Look under the NAME field again for the Microsoft XML DOM Document and select it. 7.This PLUG IN should be enabled as well, if not enable it. 8.When both of the PLUG INS are enabled, click on OK at the bottom of the screen. NOTE: If you do not have the PLUG INS showing in the MANAGE ADD ONS, you may have to go back to the GEOCACHING.COM site, select a cache, go to the GPS download and install the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN from there. The next full post will tell how to put the caches on the Garmin.
  7. I had the same problem with the latest IE and emailed them. There response was get Firefox. When I emailed back that I didn't think that that was an appropriate answer they sent this. Dear Walter R. Cullop, Thank you for contacting Garmin International. The plug-in works with Internet Explorer, however something specific to your computer is preventing the plug-in from running. If you are not able to identify the offending program and you you cannot install Firefox, I can walk you through these steps to maximize Internet Explorer for compatibility with the Garmin Communicator Plug-in. First, we will configure Internet Explorer's Internet Options. Please open Internet Explorer and follow these directions: 1. Click Tools 2. Click Internet Options 3. Click the Connections tab 4. Click LAN Settings (in the bottom right corner) 5. Check the box next to ‘Automatically Detect Settings’ 6. Click OK 7. Click the Advanced tab 8. Scroll down the list to 'Security' 9. Disable 'Check for publisher's certificate revocation' and 'Check for server certificate revocation*' 10. Click Apply, at the bottom of the window 11. Click the Security tab 12. Click 'Trusted sites' 13. Click Sites 14. Disable 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone' 15. Add the following website to the zone: http://*.garmin.com/ 16. Add the following website to the zone: https://*.garmin.com/ 17. Press Close 18. Press OK, at the bottom of the window 19. Close Internet Explorer Second, please disable any anti-virus or firewall software running on your computer. Rather it is Norton, McAfee, AVG, or other security software, this is the most likely source of interference. I cannot provide specific direction for this step. There are many versions of each developer's anti-virus software and the methods for disabling it are different for each one. If you are unsure of how to deactivate both the firewall and anti-virus software on your computer, please contact your security software's developer. Third, we will remove a file whose possible corruption may lead to an installation error. Please follow these steps to regenerate this database: 1. Open My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista / Windows 7) 2. Open the Garmin drive 3. Open the Garmin folder 4. Right-click the file GarminDevice.xml 5. Click Delete 6. Disconnect your Garmin from the computer and power the unit on. 7. Wait twenty seconds; reconnect the Nuvi to your computer. Finally, we will eliminate temporary files which may taint newly created files. This simple procedure may take anywhere from five minutes to more than an hour. This wide range depends on how much old, unused data has collected on the hard drive and the length of time since the routine was last run. Please follow these steps clean temporary data from your computer: 1. Click the Start button 2. Click Programs (Windows XP) or All Programs (Windows Vista / Windows 7) 3. Click Accessories 4. Click System Tools 5. Click Disk Cleanup 6. Choose your C: drive 7. Click OK 8. Once the calculations are complete, you presented with a list of option of data to remove. Please check every box on this list with the exceptions of Office Setup Files and Old Windows Installations. It is highly likely the list will not contain these options. If these options are not available to you, simply move to the next step. 9. Click OK If after following these procedures you are still unable to install Garmin's Communicator Plug-in, please attempt the installation on another computer or use Firefox. You may be able to avoid these errors by using Firefox, an alternative to Internet Explorer. Firefox uses a different plug-in, utilizing Java, to run our both our Communicator Plug-in and Download Manager. Many secured computers disable Active X, which is used to run our plug-ins in Internet Explorer. I very highly recommend downloading this free alternative to Internet Explorer. In order to use Firefox, please follow these directions: 1) Download and install Firefox: http://www.firefox.com/ 2) Download and install Garmin Communicator, through Firefox: http://www.garmin.com/products/communicator 3) Once the Communicator Plug-in is installed, the installer will exit and launch the Test Page. 8. It's possible that the Garmin Communicator is failing, especially if you're using Internet Explorer (or Edge, which can't be used in this case) in Windows 10. When using "Send To", if Garmin Communicator seems to work without error, yet no files arrive on the device, that's a symptom of the Win10 problem. You may place GPX files directly into the GPX folder of a Garmin GPSr, thus bypassing the plug-in. This does the same thing Garmin Communicator would do, but you may have the file copied in a fraction of the time it takes to fix Garmin Communicator when it breaks. Be aware that there may be additional things to set up on the 78s if you've never plugged it in as a USB drive, before the following steps will work. Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. Not "Send To", use the “LOC Waypoint File” button (or "GPX File", for Premium Members) on a cache page. Plug the Garmin into the USB port of the computer. Find the Garmin as a [DRIVE] or [storage device] and open it; Therein, locate a file folder named something like Garmin/GPX/; Click, drag and drop (or copy) the downloaded GPX file(s) to that [DRIVE]:Garmin/GPX/ folder. Right-click and select Eject, unplug the Garmin; Go Geocaching. (From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions) If that works fine, yet for some reason you'd prefer a lot more work , there are further steps to take that may get Garmin Communicator functioning for a while.
  9. Maybe not. I'm seeing what the OP experienced. Before upgrading to Windows 10 yesterday, Garmin Communicator worked as expected. That is, one day it worked in Firefox, the previous week it worked in Chrome, just keep switching browsers and for this moment it's fine. But today, it's behaving quite a but differently in IE 11, after upgrading to Windows 10. It's much more odd that usual. In IE 11, I go to a cache page and click "Send to GPS", and if the file exists on the GPSr, there's a warning that the file will be overwritten, so I clicked "OK". The file did not change (the new one was not sent). If I delete the file from the GPSr, there's no warning this time, it goes throuth the motions, but again, the file is not sent, it is not on the GPSr. Communicator is definitely broken now, in a weird way that almost looks like it's working, except for one important difference. The Communicator window never shows "Geocache GC5DFB.gpx saved successfully". I tried it in Firefox 30.0, and this morning it worked as always, files, messages and all. But this was all installed and configured prior to upgrading to Win 10, and Firefox is downloading a new version at this moment, so again, this may all change without notice. As JimmyM says, after I upgrade FF, it may be broken. But I already posted the solution which avoids the craziness of Communicator for Nuvi and most Garman GPSrs. Edge is not allowing Communicator to run, as others have mentioned. For the OP, in Communicator after clicking Write, be sure the Communicator window shows "Geocache GC5DFB.gpx saved successfully". If it doesn't, the file did not get sent to the GPSr. I would humbly suggest, please stop using Communicator and manage all GPSr files manually. Seriously. It works so much better that way in your favorite browser and OS, you'll be glad you switched. As an added bonus, you may load Pocket Queries with much the same manual process.
  10. Remove Flip for Mac (Windows Media player app) if you have it. From Garnin Support http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/home/support/searchsupport "Question: Why is Safari for Mac not able to detect the installed Garmin Communicator Plugin? Answer: The Safari for Mac may not be able to detect the Garmin Communicator Plugin due to one of the following reasons: Garmin Communicator Plugin may not be installed Flip4Mac Browser Plugin conflicts with the installed Garmin Communicator Plugin (Note: Flip4Mac Browser Plugin enables to view Windows Media Video files in Safari) To verify if the Plugins are installed: Open Safari Click Help Click Installed Plug-ins (Note: This will list all installed plug-ins used by Safari) Locate if Garmin Communicator and Flip4Mac Plugins are installed If Garmin Communicator Plugin is not installed then it can be downloaded and installed from here. If Garmin Communicator and Flip4Mac Plugins are installed however, Safari does not detect the Garmin Communicator Plugin as shown, then it is likely that Flip4Mac Plugin is conflicting with the Garmin Communicator Plugin. Any of the following options can resolve the conflict between Flip4Mac and Garmin Communicator Plugins: Use the Firefox web browser when using Garmin Communicator Plugin Note: Firefox can be downloaded from www.mozilla.com/firefox/.This does not affect the ability to view Windows Media Video files on the Mac. Un-install Flip4Mac Plugin Open Macintosh HD Open Applications Open Flip4Mac folder Double-click Flip4Mac Uninstaller (Note:This will prevent the ability to view Windows Media Video files on the Mac. Windows Media Player for Mac can be used for Windows Media Video files.) Install Windows Media Player for Mac and disable the Flip4Mac Browser Plugin Windows Media Player for Mac can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...p9/default.aspx To disable the Flip4Mac Browser Plugin: Open Macintosh HD Open Applications Open System Preferences Double-click Flip4Mac WMV In the Flip4Mac WMV, click Browser tab Uncheck Use Flip4Mac WMV Browser Plug-in Restart Safari if open Note: The ability to use Windows Media Video files on the Mac will be available but just not in Safari. This setting is needed until the plugins are compatible. Safari for Mac should now be able to detect that the Garmin Communicator Plugin is installed."
  11. You're not incorrect. But this is technology. It changes. Quickly. Standards change, and if you are unwilling to keep with the standards - if you insist on using older and often outdated technology to serve your needs, any problems you run into are your personal problems, not a problem with the general system. Hardware and software makers can only support older models of their product for so long before it becomes unsustainable to do so. You can't blame Microsoft if features of Windows XP stop working when they are now 4 OS generations beyond and a decade past support. If you choose to continue using XP instead of 7, 8 , or 10, you do so at your own responsibility. In this case, GPSrs that support GPX files and direct loading with mass storage have been around for over a decade. The Communicator plugin was somewhat necessary to move data between websites and the GPS in earlier models that relied on using Garmin's proprietary serial interface to talk to the computer. But these new fangled fancy GPS models communicate over a standard USB interface, one that allows for mass storage. Transferring data is no different than uploading/downloading files from your hard drive. So when it became known that the platform that the communicator plugin was built upon provided vulnerabilities to end users, browser makers began removing support for those classes of plugins. Garmin decided it wasn't worth their effort to create a new, more secure communicator plugin because you can just download data directly to folders on modern GPSrs. Groundspeak took their time, but finally recognized that keeping the "send to GPS" function that relied on these defunct plugins was causing more confusion than functionality (or worse yet, encouraging people to keep their systems vulnerable to attack by using outdated browsers just to keep the feature working). So, "Send to my GPS" is dead. Getting geocaches to those old GPS models is now a convoluted process. You either accept that, or use modern solutions that made geocaching easier in general. Paperless caching. Direct GPX file interaction. Mass storage. Phones that do everything a GPS does including store data for offline use. You don't have to be a power cacher to take advantage of these features. You don't have to find 20+ caches a day to justify using them. Of course you are welcome to cache however you want and with whatever equipment you want. You can make the process as simple or complex as you desire. But if you choose to use legacy hardware and methods, it is not the fault of Geocaching.com or Garmin that some legacy functions get retired, causing you to change up your workflow. We at the forums are always happy to help. But when we come up with solutions that don't even require you to buy new hardware, and you reply with "well we just don't do it that way," forgive us for losing sympathy that you are experiencing troubles that are simply caused by your stubbornness.
  12. I've been geocaching on off for several years, and have become frustrated at how difficult it is to accomplish these days. i don't mean the level of difficulty or lack of caches, just the amount of hurdles I have to cross before getting out and about and actually geocaching. Before, I used to either plan a day out, and download the caches to my Garmin etrex; or if I was out somewhere and has time for a quick cache, us my iPhone and see what was around. All quite simple, and not difficult to set up. Now, I can't download caches to my etrex, as it needs a Garmin communicator add-on to be applied. This isn't supported by Firefox; or Chrome. It is with Internet Explorer 10, but I have windows 10 with Microsoft Edge, which isn't supported. I can't download IE10. It looks like I might have to get a new GPS, (but not a Garmin), or a new computer (probably a Mac). The new iPhone app isn't as easy to use as the old one, burns through the battery and data on my 5S, enough to really limit what I can do. I could get e new phone (along with the GPS and the computer), as well as subscribe to premium membership to get the most out of it. But it's all extra cost that I am not prepared to pay. All in all, an enjoyable and easy pastime has turned into a hassle, so it looks like I shall no longer be Geocaching. Fortunately, there's an orienteering club nearby which seems just as good fun!
  13. The OP shall no longer be Geocaching, but just for info, there are several ways to send GPX files to a Garmin GPSr. You don't need Garmin Communicator nor any add-on. Save a GPX file or entire (unzipped) Pocket Queries to the "Garmin/GPX" folder of a Garmin GPSr. Do that all the time, and then you won't rely on "plug-ins". They are cool and all, but when have trouble with a plug-in, it's often much simpler to copy the files to "Garmin/GPX" and go, than to work on the plug-in. I almost always use the manual copying method. Garmin Communicator may be gone, but another way to load caches (if you don't like to directly place files into the "Garmin/GPX" folder) is to install Garmin Express and use lists. You can send any list to the GPSr using "Send To Garmin". "Garmin Express" is how you get software updates from Garmin, plus now it works with Geocaching.com cache lists. Microsoft Windows 10 comes with Internet Explorer. I use it instead of Edge because IE accepts more plug-ins. But Garmin Express can work with either. I sent lists of caches to my Garmin Oregon from Edge, to try it out. It works.
  14. In Win 10, I still have Communicator working in IE 11 (NOT "Edge"), and Firefox, last I checked. I got Garmin Communicator working in IE11 with Windows 10 by following the steps here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334207&view=findpost&p=5538114 I post a link since there are several things to consider when you do that. I've seen Communicator's ability to send files turn off, then turn on again, with no particular user intervention. But one day, maybe soon, Garmin Communicator may not work at all anymore in a currently updated web browser. You may place GPX files [or LOC files] directly into the GPX folder of a Garmin GPSr, thus bypassing the plugin. This performs the same thing the plugin would do, but you may have the file copied in a fraction of the time it takes to fix the plugin when it breaks. Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. Not "Send To", use the "GPX File" button [for a basic member, try the "LOC waypoint file" button] on a cache page. For a zipped Pocket Query, unzip the file, and you should now have at least one “GPX” file. (From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions)
PS. Je n'ai pas GSACK. Merci. Vigie.
  16. Hi all, I've owned my Garmin Oregon 450 for about a month now & I've had problems trying to get my home pc (Windows 7 - 64bit) to recognize the device. I keep getting a message "USB device not recognized...one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned...". The thing is, it used to be recognized but it seems that after I loaded the Garmin communicator software to download caches, I started having problems. I've also uninstalled the Garmin software that I could locate on the pc...then reconnected the Oregon 450 & had temporary success (as it reloaded it's drivers again), only to be foiled again after I had reinstalled the Garmin communicator software. Another strange thing - the Oregon 450 USB connection works on my office pc using Windows Vista Business system. Obviously, I've tried working with Garmin support - I was instructed to do a "Boot Block" procedure...this also worked temporarily. I'm getting very frustrated trying to use my Windows 7 pc to communicate with this Oregon 450. Can anybody help? Thanks for listening. D11outman
  17. As mentioned, a Premium Member can place a GPX file onto a GPSr by clicking "GPX File" in a cache page. You'd send the file in exactly the same way that "The Communicator" does, just without all the hassle of keeping The Communicator working. Also, Pocket Queries are the way to go. I copy one choice cache file at a time to my Nuvi for guidance to a cache-rich area. But unless it's an emergency where I need just one cache real quick (using the "GPX File" button), I send entire Pocket Queries to my Oregon.
  18. Garmin Communicator is a type of plug-in which can be abused to enter and infect your computer. So these NPAPI plug-ins are rejected by Chrome. Edge can't use plug-ins at all. Chrome and Edge are not Windows 10. They are browsers. Other browsers, like Firefox and Internet Explorer, are still capable of using the Communicator. FF needs a signed version of the plug-in from its plug-in store. IE is still capable of using the classic Garmin Communicator, but nobody knows for how long. The end of your geocaching? Just alter your workflow. There are lots of alternatives, you don't need the Communicator at all. Use the GPX file button instead of the Sent to GPS button. Or use Pocket Queries. Or third party programs like GSAK or GAPP. Like I said....a cheap, used unit running XP and Firefox makes everything smooth. Not even that complicated if you're running Windows 10 Pro. Fire up Hyper-v and load an instance of whatever OS you have buried in the desk. Had to do this so I could get some ActiveX and Java streaming webcams working for an upcoming trip. I am not having any issues with windows 10, Edge, or my Oregons ( 650 and 450). I either use GSAK, or just drag and drop the GPX files onto my units. I do have a premium membership andt have download 65K ( I know, overkill) geocaches into the Oregon 650 and 5K geocaches into the 450.
  19. Windows 10, I suppose? I got Garmin Communicator working in IE11 with Windows 10 by following the steps here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334207&view=findpost&p=5538114 I post a link since there are several things to consider when you do that. I've seen Communicator's ability to send files turn off, then turn on again, with no particular user intervention. But one day, maybe soon, Garmin Communicator may not work at all anymore in a currently updated web browser. You may place GPX files directly into the GPX folder of a Garmin GPSr, thus bypassing the plugin. This performs the same thing the plugin would do, but you may have the file copied in a fraction of the time it takes to fix the plugin when it breaks. If you followed this process, you'd be done by now. Download the GPX file from Geocaching.com. Not "Send To", use the "GPX File" button on a cache page. For a zipped Pocket Query, unzip the file, and you should now have at least one “GPX” file. (From Gitchee-Gumee's excellent instructions)
  21. I have a Garmin 550. I have had some success, but am frustrated again. About two weeks ago, went out, found some caches, logged in my GPS my comments and my finds and filled in the logs. Now trying to connect to the computer and download my success, and it keeps asking me again and again to download and install Garmin communicator. I must have done it many many times.. still when I try to connect. No luck at all. Using Windows 10, can use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome for a browser to get into Geocaching.com. Garmin recognizes my machine, says it's all up to date. But how to get to a list of found caches transferred to the geocaching.com site. I go to a site on the geocaching.com site and try to load it to the 550... need the communicator.. WTH am I doing or not doing? All help appreciated.
  22. I got Garmin Communicator working in Windows 10 by following the steps here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=334207&view=findpost&p=5538114 Note that it works in IE11 (included in Win10), and does NOT work in "Edge". I post a link since there are several things to consider when you do that. I've seen Communicator's ability to send files turn off, then turn on again, with no particular user intervention. But one day, maybe soon, Garmin Communicator may not work at all anymore in a currently updated web browser. 23. Just so we're all on the same page - when you say that Windows 10 doesn't recognize your Explorist anymore, you mean that it's not mounting as a mass storage device so that you can access the folders and files on it. If you're talking about geocaching.com not recognizing that your device is plugged in, you really mean that the communicator plugin isn't detected - because all of the browsers (MS Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari (on mac)) no longer support plugins built on the NPAPI platform, of which all of the GPS communicator plugins were made. This is not unique to Magellan, as Garmin's communicator plugin is also no longer useable. The "Send to GPS" button is effectively dead. Use "Save to GPX" instead, or better yet, use pocket queries because you really shouldn't be loading caches one at a time anyway.
  24. No problems with Windows 10, FireFox, Garmin Communicator and 'send gpx to My GPS' (Etrex_30). Windows 10, FireFox set as Default Browser, FireFox set in Widows 10 as default browser. Plug in Etrex_30 (for the first time), select as usb drive, windows report problems with external drive connection but appears to fix this (finds required drivers). On PC look at Etrex_30 files for both internal memory and external memory card all OK. Log into geocaching.com, select a Cache page, "send to My GPS", pop up "garmin Communicator not found", select download link. This was followed by various FireFox messages of 'not supported' and 'not allowed' blah1 blah1 blah! messages. Worked my way through by 'ignoring and allowing'. Restart FireFox. Find a cache page, 'send to gps', communicator opens and have choice of write to Garmin or memor card. Wrote to both and all is well. So no problems but was it a fluke? I don't know but it works as expected.
  25. Hello! I am pretty new here, my parents started geocaching. I bought my own GPS (Garmin Etrex 20x) but I have problems with sending the caches to my GPS. I have a Windows 10 64bit with Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. I also have an Macbook Air with Safari. Everything is up to date. But nothing is compatible! Here is my story: I started at my Mac, I downloaded the Garmin Communicator Plugin as requested, and succeded... But only on the Gamin website. When I go to the geocaching website, it says it cant find the Plugin... Somewhere in my system, it is jammed. I went to my settings, and put every plugin of Garmin at on, as the website said so (at the help desk). But still no good luck. And so I went to my Microsoft PC with Windows 10, but NOTHING is compatible... Firefox sent me to Internet Explorer, and Internet Explorer said it does not support in combination with Windows 10 64bit. Chrome and the Edge are also not supported... HELP. I tried everything I could... I even tried with EasyGPS on my Microsoft PC to transfer the Waypoints to my GPS, but even that fails.
