  1. Thinking about purchasing Garmin GPSMAP 66s, can you log a cache with the said Garmin while in the brush or later at home? Basically can you log a find and write a response to a hide on a Garmin or do you need a phone or computer?
  2. Hello, I need some help with starting my first Wherigo. I have hidden a few hundred Traditionals, Multis, Mysterys, Letterboxes, and hosted an event or two. My goal for this year is to hide my first Wherigo, publish my first EarthCache, and host my first CITO. I have been doing my research on how to create a Wherigo and it seems it is only possible with a Windows, is this true? It is possible/what is the best way to create a Wherigo on a Chromebook or Apple Laptop? I appreciate the help and time, I hope to place the first of, some day, many WhereIgos in my home town!
  3. I grabbed a free Garmin GPSmap 60c from one of the facebook buy-nothing groups last year. I've been trying to get it working with my Macbook running 10.14.6 Mojave. System information sees the device in USB, but neither Garmin Basecamp nor Express can find it. The GPS device itself reports that it's connected. Anyone know if it does work, or will it never work? Thanks for any help.
  4. It does support photos. It's just not an easy procedure. GPX files do not contain photos, which means when you download geocache information, either individually or via Pocket Query, there is not photo. You can use geocache managers (GSAK for windows, iCaching for Mac) to grab photos via the API, and these managers can load these images to your Garmin and associate them with geocaches. I've done this in the past, but it's not really that useful.
  5. After unzipping it is necessary to rename the img file to gmapsupp.img, if you don't the GPSMAP 60CSx won't see it. Also remember that Windows doesn't show certain file extensions by default. If you e.g. downloaded otm-us-west.zip and unzipped it, the name of the new file is either otm-us-west.img or otm-us-west. Rename in the former case to gmapsupp.img; in the latter case to gmapsupp
  6. Editing a log in the app has never been an option, as far as I know - one reason why I prefer to do all my logs on the computer from drafts I make on the phone in the field. (Yes, I do cache with my phone, official app, but log all but trackable drops/retrieves and FTF's from the computer from drafts at the end of the day) I have not had any issues editing logs from the website; I use WIndows 11, and current version of Chrome.
  7. This issue still persists, in both Chrome and Firefox. My last post in May was using Firefox in Windows 8, I'm now using Windows 11. Cookies have been removed, multiple times. And also after waiting for over a minute, just in case the map would reload to the location of the PQ. But it never does. Had any technician already looked at this after 6 months?
  8. This is going to be messy. First, the builder application needs to be updated to run in a 64-bit environment. I used to have a pinned thread about that. Groundspeak consolidated all the pinned threads into the "Read first: Wherigo FAQ and formerly pinned threads" pinned thread. Go there and follow the link to the "Wherigo Builder and 64-bit Windows" thread. You'll need to update the builder app. Next, if you're running Windows 11, I think you're out of luck. The builder doesn't seem to work with Windows 11. While I have the decompiled soruce code for the builder, I don't have the licenses to the referenced software needed to make a complete build of it. There hasn't been any community interest or encouragement for me to sink in the time to fix things, so I've been putting my time elsewhere. When I need to use Groundspeak's builder for something, I fire up an old Windows 10 desktop of mine and use that. I've been wondering if I should spend time fixing the builder or not. Perhaps so.
  9. Hello, As this is my first post in this forum, I hope I am in the right place... I was just wondering: When I use the Geocache app on my Android phone, I see all kind of caches AND the Adventure Labs on the map. When clicking on an AL, the other app opens and I can play the Lab. Now for the question: I use my Garmin Montana for geocaching and what happens frequently is the following: I find myself somewhere (for an appointment e.g.) with some time to spare, switch on the Montana, do a quick refresh via Geocache Live to see if there are any caches in the neighbourhood. However, I do not get the Adventure Labs that might be close to me. I do understand that, if this would be the case, I would need to get my phone/tablet out to complete it. Last time, I had my GPS showing me some caches and I had to balance both my GPS and tablet to have the combination of both.... So, in short: please get the "main" location of an Adventure Lab on the map of the GPS (as is the case on the Android map) so I can have an idea of the situation around me. If the next step could be integrated into the Garmin GPS logic, it would of course even be better (GPS is linked to phone/tablet via Bluetooth and Garmin connect anyway and therefore to internet) Thanks for follow up. Best regards, LVL
  10. I own a Garmin Montana 680t. I've loaded about 2500 caches onto it via creating PQ's on the GC website, loading those into Garmin's Basecamp program on my MacBook Pro. I've done the same method for years with my old Montana 650 that unfortunately died and I didn't want to invest the $ to repair, but rather upgrade. I've noticed that when I scroll thru the list of geocaches on the unit the device freezes after maybe 20-30 scrolls with either the down arrow or finger flicks (it is a touch screen model). The whole unit becomes inoperable and the only way to shut it down is to remove the battery and replace and boot up. Garmin replaced the unit with a new one after I complained and it does the same thing. I called them to ask for insight and all I get is that it maybe a GPX file that is corrupt. They asked me to zip the files I recently uploaded and email it to them, but beyond that they have no solution. Sounds like they are passing the buck. They also stated to use Garmin Express to upload the caches instead. I find if I do that I get too much extraneous data in addition to the cache icons on the map--parking coords and blue flags among them which make for a cluttered map. Anyone else having this problem? Andrew aka Eyedoc
  11. Kunarion, Thanks for the reply. Your answer sorted it! I had just placed the file in the Garmin folder and not in the GPX sub folder.
  12. You didn't say what folder you placed them on the Etrex. You must place the GPX files into the folder Garmin/GPX.
  13. How useful do you think this thing's gonna be? I saw one of these for the first time today at REI. It's only $20, which ain't bad I guess. One of the websites likes the idea of putting it in a locked box, and have the beacon transmit the code to the lock. That's pretty cool I guess. Obviously only useful to Garmin Oregon, Dakota, and 62 users. So, good idea? Bad idea? Any other creative uses ideas for me when I pick one up?
  14. This seems strange to me, so maybe I'm wrong... I have an older Etrex 30x(a discontinued model I got on sale at Costco several years ago). Is there a way to create a waypoint from coordinates? I've searched this forum, Garmin website and google and the unit itself. We had an earthquake about 2 miles from me a couple weeks ago, I looked it up and got the coordinates from the USGS and wanted to hike there after the rain stops. I could not find anyway to create a waypoint using said coordinates. I couldn't even find a way to change the coordinate format. Is it just me or is this not possible with the Etrex 30x? If not, is there a Garmin that will? I had to bring my old Magellan Tritan 400 out of mothballs and that did it no problem.
  15. I have an interesting issue on my 66sr. I have been doing a lot of learning/playing with RINEX observations and believe I have have come across an issue where RINEX appears to receive multi GNSS Multi-Band RINEX data initially but after somewhere around 6 hours, GLONASS satellites (G1 and G2) begin to reduce until they are no longer received and similarly for Galileo (E1 and E5) but after 10 hours approximately but these times vary. The handheld never recovers so only GPS L1 and L5 is received from that point on. L5 also begins to reduce but is still received sporadically. Before you ask, I have done several tests all with the same result, with my main test site being in a very clear view of the sky with no obstructions 10 degrees above horizontal. Also it is very near (12km) from a UK base station that continues to receive multi frequency GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou signals then the 66sr does not. Has anyone else had this experience? I have raised a support case and am running another test occasionally viewing which satellites the device's satellites status shows it can see, comparing this to my phone at the same time so I can further determine if it is a RINEX issue or a device issue.
  16. Of all the GPS and cell phones I've had over the years, the most accurate device has always been my old Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. My Garmin GPSmap 60CSx is still the GPS that I use when I hide a new cache.
  17. Try again with the OSM maps. OSM is just a database, and various maps are built from that. One well-known provider of OSM-based maps (the ".nl" one) just stopped updating one day, became a zombie site. There are other providers of OSM maps for Garmin, but again, I'm not the one to know details. If you're willing to move over to a phone, your options expand dramatically. You want topo contours, hill shading, and auto-routing on trails, with spoken directions in a sultry voice, why yes, we have several choices... PS about your Garmin, that 30' off-ness doesn't sound too unusual; tomorrow it might be 30' off in the other direction. And/or, that basemap might've been misaligned. Those units are considered excellent for GPS accuracy, but even today, no unit is perfect. Modern phones are fully up to the task too, so you have lots of quality choices.
  18. Up for sale is a like new Garmin Etrex 32x. Used twice for maybe an hour total. Lost interest quickly in hobby. Comes complete with box, manuals, cable and an upgrade of screen protector and a 32gb memory card. $250 plus $20 for shipping or free local pickup Located in Palm Beach Florida
  19. On my Windows desk top, my profile page "Dashboard" has all the stuff that should be to the right of "Recently viewed caches now way at the bottom left. It is normal on my Windows laptop. Anone know how to get it back to normal? Notice the first picture shows the margin to the right is blank and then in the 2nd it shows what should be there at the bottom.
  20. I have been looking around the various threads at the different terms that seem to be used exclusively by geocachers. I decided to post a list of these terms which would obviously benefit from the input of others. I am certain there are hundreds of other excellent terms that can be added to the list and probably many correction that can be made as well. Is there a word for someone who is extremely skilled at geocaching? The List: Blair Witching: When GPSr readings appear to 'flip' over a desired coordinate (usually near the cache site), preventing the seeker from locating a cache. Booty Nuggets: The treasure found in the cache for trading (see also McToys, Geoswag). Chromes: "Crow Miles" describing linear distance without regarding elevation or terrain. Drive & Dump: A cache placed with little thought, usually very close to a road or parking lot. Force (The Force): The ability to instinctively know where a cache is hidden when you get within a certain proximity. The term alludes to supernatural force used by specially gifted characters in Star Wars. FTF: First to Find Garminites: Those that favor the Garmin line of GPSr units Geobasher: A person (usually a geomuggle) who derides geocachers or the act of geocaching. Geocasher: A geocacher who leaves valuable items in a cache. Geodashing: Another GPS Game involving visiting randomly generated waypoints Geomuggle: A person that is unaware of the existence of geocaching. The term alludes to Harry Potter where "muggles" refers to non-wizard humans. (see also In-Laws) Geosnatcher: A person who steals the contents of a geocache or the entire geocache itself (see also Plundered) GPSr Food: Batteries Hedwigged: E-mailed. The term alludes to Harry Potter's messenger owl, Hedwig. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named: The gentleman who placed the first Geocache in May 2000. The term alludes to Harry Potter's evil nemesis, a powerful wizard who must not be named. In-Laws: Unwanted geomuggles who remain at a cache location for extended periods of time, preventing discrete access to that cache. Letterboxing: Another stash-and-find game that started in the U.K. over 100 years ago. It is similar to Geocaching, but without the use of GPS and coordinates. Log and Dump: A cache carelessly replaced in its original location, often left unhidden and vulnerable to plundering. Loose Bearings: The point at which the direction on your GPSr no longer points in the correct direction, mostly because you've slowed down to a point that it doesn't know in which direction you're moving. Maggies: Those that favor the Magellan line of GPS units Markwell: To create a link to a previous, or related forum discussion of a topic. McToys: Cheap, dirty, or broken toys of little monetary value left in caches for trade. Microcache: Much smaller than a regular cache. Minicache: Between the size of a microcache and a regular cache. Minute War: Another GPS Game involving playing a "capture the flag" related game on a global scale Neocacher: An inexperienced Geocacher (see also newbie) Newbie: An inexperienced Geocacher (see also Neocacher) Plasma Bandits: Mosquitos Plundered: A cache which has had its contents stolen or the theft of the cache itself. (see also Geosnatcher) Signature Item: A specific item used and/or created by a geocacher to show that they've visited a cache. Smurfs 292: Meeting another geocacher in the woods. The term alludes to Smurfs episode #292 where the Smurfs encounter "Wild Smurf", a 150 year old loincloth-wearing Smurf who was lost as an infant and raised by squirrels. Sock Puppet: A person posting under a different handle in order to appear to have more than one person supporting the stated position. Swag: The treasure found in the cache for trading (see also McToys, Booty Nuggets) TFTC: Thanks for the Cache The "Other" Site: Navicache.com. In competition with Geocaching.com The Degree Confluence Project: Another GPS based hobby involving visiting points where the latitude and longitude are integers (e.g. N 42° 00.000 W 088° 00.000) TNLN: Took Nothing, Left Nothing TNLNSL: Took Nothing, Left Nothing, Signed Logbook TPTB: The Powers That Be (Jeremy Irish and Elias - those that control Geocaching.com) Troll: A person who posts inflammatory remarks specifically to elicit heated replies. YAPIDKA: Yet another park I didn't know about A C atom noticed that an H ion was looking depressed, "Why do you look so sad?" he asked. "I lost an electron" replied the H ion. The C atom asked "Are you sure?" To which the H ion replied, "I'm positive."
  21. Where do I find the 'Gear Icon'? I am not using an app, I am using my Garmin Oregon 750t, and then uploading the drafts to log the caches on the website. When uploading the drafts from the GPS, and logging the finds, the system used to remember which caches I had already logged, so when I uploaded new ones another day, the old ones were not included. Now, the previously logged caches come back every time.
  22. I've seen this happen a couple of times with this device, and a couple of times with my older Oregon.... Yesterday we'd finished a hike, and I was saving the track log, in order to re-record our return journey. The save went ok (I've seen it crash here before), then I went into the track manager to find the saved gpx file. The device locked up, unresponsive. I eventually had to hard restart holding the power key, and when the device restarted the cache database was gone.... 'No geocaches found.' etc..... I noticed the cache waypoints seemed intact, and my saved WPs were OK. I can't recall how I fixed it last time, I think I deleted the cache GPX files and reloaded, or maybe even the whole GPX folder.... My questions - what has happened? Is there a less random way to fix this? Can it be fixed in the field? Cheers!
  23. Just to note that I'm seeing both the "/hide/" instead of "/track/" as well as the "/GC0" thing. Chrome 120.0.6099.110 on Windows, not that it sounds like it matters.
  24. Any body know if windows 11 can play nice with GSAK?
  25. Apologies if this has already been covered (I didn't see it in the thread, but I may have missed it), but on a trackable's page, whenever you click on a cache linked from a TB log, it redirects to the page for GC0, which obviously doesn't exist. Getting this using Firefox on Windows 10.
