  1. After a weird GPX failure yesterday, I tried to upload a GPX file from my phone to my Garmin 66s, using the Garmin Connect and Garmin Explore apps, but nothing would work. I've since managed to get 'Live Geocaching' to work, which kind of does the job... but it would still be nice to be able to upload a .GPX file from the phone to the Garmin 66s and then switch off Bluetooth. Has anyone managed to do it (via wifi or Bluetooth - without having to connect the 66s to a laptop via the cable)?
  2. I am suddenly having problems downloading caches to my Garmin eTrex 10 because my computer is no longer detecting the plugin. I tried reinstalling it, which causes it to bring up Garmin's webpage, which displays a message that the plugin is not detected. The computer detects the GPS just fine but I can't write any caches to it. It was working fine before so I'm not sure what happened. I am using Internet Explorer. Anyone else having this issue?
  3. After many searches I have finally been able to get my Garmin to work with Windows 10. This is a step by step procedure of how I had to set up Windows 10 to do to get the Garmin to work with it. My Garmin is a 450. My following post will tell how to get the Caches to retrieve the Caches and load them to the Garmin. If you fiind this helpful, or have any suggested changes to the post, please let me know. Cache4Fun, 4evrCking ================== SETTING UP WINDOWS 10 TO WORK WITH GARMIN 450 The GEOCACHING.COM web site will NOT download to the Garmin GPS with Microsoft EDGE (which is the default browser for Windows 10). You must use INTERNET EXPLORER which comes with Windows 10 – you may want to put INTERNET EXPLORER on your opening screen. First you must set the SECURITY SETTINGS to allow access to the Garmin GPS – to do this: 1.Open INTERNET EXPLORER (not Edge) 2.Type in INTERNET OPTIONS in the search area of Windows 10. When the search results come up, select INTERNET OPTIONS CONTROL PANEL (top item). 3.Next select the SECURITY TAB 4.Then set the SECURITY LEVEL FOR THIS ZONE to MEDIUM HIGH 5.Then disable ENABLE PROTECTION MODE (remove the check mark in the box) Second, you must allow access to the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN and XML DOM – to do this: (NOTE: You may have to download the files, if you do, go to where Caches are normally downloaded to the GPS and select the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN - this will download the files you need.) 1.After you have the above files, go to the INTERNET EXPLORER SEARCH are and type in MANAGE ADD-ONS. When the search results come up, select MANAGE BROWSER ADD-ONS CONTROL PANEL (top item). 2.Next select MANAGE ADD-ONS (a box about 1/2 way down page) 3.ALL ADD-ONS should be in the SHOW box, if not select it and wait a few seconds while it searches for the ADD-ONS. 4.Look under the NAME field and select GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN. 5.The PLUG IN should be enabled, if not enable it. 6.Look under the NAME field again for the Microsoft XML DOM Document and select it. 7.This PLUG IN should be enabled as well, if not enable it. 8.When both of the PLUG INS are enabled, click on OK at the bottom of the screen. NOTE: If you do not have the PLUG INS showing in the MANAGE ADD ONS, you may have to go back to the GEOCACHING.COM site, select a cache, go to the GPS download and install the GARMIN COMMUNICATOR PLUG IN from there. The next full post will tell how to put the caches on the Garmin.
  4. Hello, I have a GPSMAP 65s unit. It is unreliable in terms of receiving Multi-GNSS. GPS is always received. Galileo and GLONASS is unreliable. One day lots of satellites, the other day no satellite despite unrestricted sky view. Restarting the unit doesnt fix it. I consider it appearing somehow random. Today, I went on a hike in the forest. In the beginning few Galileo and GLONASS were received. Hours later, the connection dropped, no satellites in view. Even when in free field. The unit is up to date through Garmin Express. Any same observations among other owners? Any known fixes? Regards
  5. This is perplexing and frustrating... It's been a while since I have sent geocaches to my Garmin GPS. Since I have done so in the past I have upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 but trying to install and use the Garmin Communicator I can't find any browser that supports this plugin. How does this happen?? I'm I missing something here?
  6. My laptop updated to windows 10, I now can't send caches from Geocaching.com to my Garmin Montana. I downloaded garmin communicator, but that doesn't work. Looking for advice on how to upload them to GPS from laptop.
  7. I work for the Veterans Warehouse Thrift Store in Kennewick, Wa in the electronics dept. I picked up a Garmin GPS 45 GPS receiver at the thrift store. The GPS receiver is complete, un-opened in the original box with the manual. It has been a while since I setup a new (or messed with one period) GPS receiver. The receiver is seeing the satellites on the satellite screen but that is far as I can get the receiver to go. I press the page > then I have the menu page, I go to the operation setup page. I set the offset and the correct time isn't showing up and the date is showing 18-Jan-00 and I can't scroll to the date to change it. Is it me or is there something wrong with the receiver?
  8. I just bought the Magellan exploriste 610 and am unable to download caches, I have instauled Magellan communicator but still get the message communicator not found, any help would be welcome.
  9. I recently bought a second hand Garmin 76csx specifically to use for geocaching. I'm trying to figure out how to load geocaches on it. After downloading the Garmin Express and trying to "add this device", it tells me that Garmin does not support this device... Which Garmin device would I need to purchase in order to be able to download Geocaches to find from the site? Can someone steer me in the right direction regarding handheld GPS for geocaching? Thanks
  11. Hi, Don't know if anyone can help. Mac mini running os Sierra 10.12.2 Safari 10.0.2 Using a Garmin etrex 10. Tried connecting this today to send some caches to GPS, but Mac wouldn't talk to etrex. Clicked on "send to gps" and I get a dialogue box saying "Garmin Communicator Plug In NOT Detected". Clicked on download and install now and the site software.Garmin.com tells me "you have Communicator Plugin, devices detected etrex 10". Tried downloading and reinstalling plugin. No joy. Tried chrome and Firefox, neither seem to accept the plugin either. Also tried enabling plugins in the preferences for Safari too. Still nothing. Never had this issues before, I don't know what has changed. I see some others have had a similar issue and have found a work around by downloading gpx files and dumping them straight on the etrex, but frankly that's a total arse ache and not a proper solution. Any guesses anyone? Many thanks, Jez.
  12. Since there hasn't been a post here announcing this - it's official. The GPSMAP 66 series is on its way. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/598455 Large, 3” sunlight-readable color display for easy viewing Multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) support to track your travels in more challenging environments than GPS alone plus three-axis compass and barometric altimeter Access to BirdsEye Satellite Imagery with direct-to-device downloads and no annual subscription Expanded wireless connectivity supports Active Weather for up-to-date forecasts and animated weather radar and Geocaching Live for mobile syncing and updates Compatible with Garmin Explore™ website and app to help you manage tracks, routes and waypoints and review statistics from the field Up to 16 hours of battery life in GPS mode; 1 week in expedition mode lets you explore longer than ever before on a single set of AA batteries There are some interesting advancements here. It's no surprise that the same wireless connectivity introduced in the Oregon 700 series now makes its way to the GPSMAP line. It also seems that Garmin's answer to Basecamp is to move all services to the cloud/web version with Garmin Explore. MGNSS - Does this model support more satellite systems than just the American GPS and Russian GLONASS? From the images, it looks like there's some changes to the physical size and layout of the device with a larger screen and higher resolution screen. And it comes with a whopping 16GB of internal storage.
  13. Moin! Danke Nika's Rudel
  14. I can't seem to send geocache to my gps. The Magellan communicator cannot be found, when I go to my aps it is marked that it is downloaded, I am using windows 10, tried a lot of stuff but nothing works, is anyone having the same problem?
  15. What I normally do when I see a new cache is in my area (or maybe a little out of the area) I look over ht description etc, then use the directions to locate the area. I use the map function to find the route I want to take - hate to say the best route - and use thr satellite function to get a picture of the area. I usually do forget about downloading the cache to my Etrex. When I do I then use the above method to get to GZ and usually use may iPhone app, sometime the Etrex does better. BUT when I use the Etrex to find the geocache - (menu -- geocaches -- desired cache etc) when I select Navigate all I see is an arrow for direction ( usually not correct) and distance. Maybe that is the way I need to use it , but asking is there another way to navigate to a cache using the Etrex? As an aside, sometime Cachly app (not iCachly) works great., and I did find the other day on a multi if I use the Geocaching.com app to get to stage one and do the calculations, if I then use the My GSPCoordinates app it worked okay; I just figured the news coordinates then looking at the screen watched the updated numbers as I walked around. Maybe will not be so good ig over a bigger distance, this was in the confines of an old fairly small cemetery. Maybe I should just stick with what works for me, but just asking.
  16. once upon a time i used jsak but chromebook does not support it. how do i get my caches from the geocache site onto my garmin??
Was mache ich falsch? Vor der Werkrückstellung ging dieses einwandfrei. Ich hoffe auf Eure Hilfe.
  19. After 10 or 12 years geocaching with a Garmin 60Cx, it finally gave up the ghost (battery leaked and acid ate the internal connections). So I bought a GPSMAP 64sx because it appeared to be the closest to what I'm used to. I've had a few questions arise. 1. When I plug into the computer, I can send caches to the Garmin no problem, but the website doesn't seem to recognize it. When I'm logged in and looking at a cache page, there is no link to send to the GPS. I usually don't need that since I use GSAK, but is there a ways to send cache details from the website? I could do it before with the other Garmin. 2. How do I delete a geocache from the 64sx? On the old one all I had to do is highlight it, press menu and the option to delete was there. If there was more than one, the option to delete all was there. On this one, other than the initial GO button at the bottom, the menu button only brings up three options: Review Point, Setup Map, and Restore Defaults. If I don't select it but show the general geocache page off the main menu, then press menu, there are five options: Spell search, search near, Choose filter, show Found, and setup geocaches. If I can't delete it, maybe there's a way to filter out found caches. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 3. Neither the Name (or title) or the GC# of the geocache is shown. Instead, the notes I put into GSAK are shown on the Garmin screen as the cache title, both in the menu and on the map. How do I get it to show the name? Obviously I could put the cache title in the note field in GSAK before sending it, and maybe that's the best solution, but I'd think the gpx file should have the title in a field which predominates over any notes. Thanks in advance for the help.
  21. Does anyone repair Garmin GPS any more
  22. Completely new to Geocaching - I have a garmin unit eTrax 30x. I downloaded and installed the Garmin Communicator plugin which shows my unit. When I hit the send to my GPS a window pops up saying Garmin Communicator Plugin not installed Looking for advice thanks
  23. everything worked just find when I downloaded the caches to my gps directly but the next day I was forced to update my safari to version 10. I made sure that I have version 4.2 of the communicator installed as well. Now I can no longer download straight to my gps it says the communicator cannot be found. Which means I cannot even click the find devices button. I open communicator and it sees my gps. I've checked the security and these are allowed although there is a warning says it does not support the highest level of security for Safari plug-ins. From what I've read it should still work though. What can I do?
  24. Unit arrived yesterday. Loaded up a list, loaded up OSM maps, and synced it to my Groundspeak account. Today I went to find a few hides. Some successes, some failures and some frustrations. The purpose of this thread is to allow users of this GPS to discuss issues and work-arounds. 1. Searching for caches by GC code in the field did not yield any results. When I got back home I tried again and was able to search GC code successfully. Lesson learned. Need to go to Geocaching( activity page)->Magnifying glass->Geocaches->grid ( lower right corner icon) and enter the GC code. I was not going all the way back to the geocaching home screen and floundering around. 2. At one point all the cache symbols disappeared from the map view. Tried turning the unit off and on with no change. Resulted in abandoning the intended hit list for the day. Came back home, put in a set of fresh batteries, the symbols returned. Not sure if the 2 actions are related or coincidence. 3. Found the option to route by automobile. Set the system to prompt when each geocache is selected. Still looking for an easy way to switch between modes without ending navigation and starting again. Hoping vehicle nav option will allow me to leave the android at home. 4. Looking for a way to get Garmin to stop recording tracklogs every time i set routing to a waypoint. I have successfully used that feature on my Etrex vista to update OSM trails. Should't be on by default, IMHO. If i try turning it off it keeps bugging me to turn it back on. The only controls I have found are Geocaching page ->menu ( three horizontal bars, lower right corner)Recording. That page allows me to alter the recording method (Distance, Time, Auto) Interval, turn auto pause and autostart on or off ( autostart off just keeps bugging you until you turn it on manually) select the file format and autoarchive options. No option to manually turn tracklogs on and off. I see no reason to fill up the unit's memory with tracklogs I have no need for. 5. Find logs entered into the unit in the field successfully synced with the Groundspeak website with no additional actions by me. I will continue to keep paper backup notes until I'm more comfortable that its seamless. Both found and DNF logs were transferred . Fingers crossed. Too bad there is no qwerty keyboard or voice input. 6. On the cache search page I see no options to sort the order of the caches displayed. (Geocaching-> spyglass->Geocaches) I'd like to see nearest first. I usually use my android phone to navigate to the nearest parking opportunity, then switch to the Garmin for the last couple miles hike. For the most part the cache would then sort near the top of the list, not somewhere in the middle of the 250 some odd caches loaded to the unit. 7. On the cache map window ( Geocaching.->[tap screen] there is a black bar at the top with a cache designation, a distance in miles and a direction arrow. The cache happens to be the last one I found. The bearing and distance do NOT relate to the bearing and distance from my present location to that cache. Any idea what it is? Early on I was using that as the go to pointer, which confused me when it told me the "cache" was 8 MILES away. ( It was actually less than 250 feet from the car park). I have since found the blue pointer window, same as the Etrex.
  25. I have an Oregon 650t that crashed last year while I was 100 miles from home. At that point, it lost all GPS function, a whole lot of files, such as all maps, lost the Language, doesn't even have the correct time. When I typed this post it showed "February 5"", time is "136" and counting. Strangely, the startup text with my name and phone number still works. The menu screen is there with icons, with the incorrect time and date. But not much else. Today I found out how to get it to connect to USB. There's only a small list of files in Windows, it doesn't show up as a “Garmin GPS” on the PC and Garmin Express doesn't see it. But connecting by PC gives me some hope. I'm imagining that I could fix it now, in theory. Maybe? I installed an old SD card map, and it's blank, even zoomed all the way out. Once it's powered on, I can press and release the User Button, to cause a "Database Error" fault. I did a text chat with Garmin Support who said to do a Master Reset. This consists of holding the power and user buttons in a certain process. I've tried that for months. Supposedly, it will start up, detect the missing files and restore them automatically. But it simply starts as usual. I was told that it will find and show the GPS location and correct time and date, but that also never seems to happen. He said I have to buy new maps, and they are for the SD card. I have a Garmin map SD card, but not the default internal factory maps. I'm not sure he fully understands the issue. And "Restore" doesn't re-install internal maps? So it will restore... what exactly? I don't really trust Garmin's canned answers. I'd bet if the "Database" itself is gone, the ability to track satellites is also gone, and therefore it can never calculate location, time and date. But I'm not the expert. So... Let's say a Garmin 650T has lost all its files but can connect to a PC. Is there a way to get the correct files re-installed? There are existing files, is one of them the Restore file? I never did a full backup of the entire device, just Profiles and the GPS folder. I don't know how it could crash like that (Garmin Support seems surprised by that), or if it's even salvageable.
