  1. I think the "problems" can be objectively summed up: 1 - Inconsistency: ALRs are not allowed except on challenges which are... 2 - Mystery Cache classificiation: meaning they blend in on a map and there is no quick method of differentiating them visually; they more of than not are just traditional caches with additional requirements and thus do not always seem to 'fit' with that classification. 3 - D/T ratings: these do not always adequately sum up the challenge portion, or it isn't clear to COs or cachers whether the D/T ratings are for the cache or for the challenge...or both. And here's where it becomes more subjective: * Challenge "credit": I would also argue that proper "credit" is not always given those who complete difficult challenges. Yeah, it ends up on your list of smilies, but those who DO go for the quad-fizzies and Jasmers and 365 day streaks often do so to brag...and rightfully so. Give credit where credit is due...points or stars or whatever rating system for challenge difficulty would quickly catch on (at least in my area). I'm not a big challenge guy and I don't really care who has the longest streaks, but I recognize the achievement and I'm pretty sure folks who do these things like other folks to know about it.
  2. They come in all shapes and sizes - some you look at the logs and noone with under 5000 caches has got it because it's so hard. I've done a 100-day stretch challenge, qualify for a 365/366; am working on rainbow (need indigo and orange OR violet as all must be from different trails); working on 50 church micros (zillions of these caches - clue in the name - in the UK; there are dozens of challenges based around them. IMHO they're over-valued as a series but that's another matter) and one where you need a cache in every 5-mile increment from home up to 250 (have about 20 missing - past about 60 miles it gets hard. 245-250 was in Paris!) So yes a good one encourages you to find more caches along a theme; some are just a bit too rarefied. 200-day stretch, for example. There are some on having a whole line or column on your D/T grid, that I think I qualify for but not worth the drive.
  3. Luckily for me, the most challenging challenges I have completed (so far) have had a final container and/or location commensurate with the awesomeness of the challenge itself; these are the first two that come to mind: Ontario Challenge - Yours to Discover Challenge: Ironman 365 Consecutive Days <--PMO cache alert - don't click if you are avoiding the audit logs I was going back through the 40 challenges I have completed to find an example of a lame location/container combination but I couldn't find one. Just lucky, I guess. We wouldn't know for sure unless it happened, but I'd like to believe that implementation of this feature would increase the quality of the final container/location given the greater exposure the cache would have in the new system. Is it problematic to you if people sign your log sheet and then post a note, with no intention of ever completing the challenge? Wouldn't you want the difficulty of your challenges enhanced by more Stars than just an average challenge? Wouldn't you want it easier for cachers to be able to find your challenges in queries and on the maps? If your containers and locations are that good, wouldn't you want more opportunities for them to get the recognition they deserve via Favorite points? My suggestion is more of an enhancement than it is a fix. Even without its implementation the system works almost flawlessly. Except for locating/filtering and the temporal anomalies between the physical logging and the challenge completing (which isn't an issue for me personally, as I do not pre-sign).
  4. hi, i am using google chrome on my desktop PC to add it and i am putting the cordinates in using N/E (N51 54.365 E000 54.354 for example) but the cache pin shows up on the map with the red circles, its jsut the continue button isnt enabled thanks mrredrunner100

  8. This is a list of all 72 current entries in the "All Geocoins" list on geocaching.com that contain the word "achievement". The list is ordered by the time the coin name was registered (id-numbers as shown in the source code of that page, there are some numbers without a custom icon as well, marked with a *) It looks like CoinAndPins and others(?) registered more icons than they made coins for so far. 9. COs who think that beacuse they've put out a T5 cache, necessitating use of equipment such as ropes / boats, that it's automatically a 5/5. The 5/5 I've found was visible from about 100 yards away and the host from about 1/4 of a mile. 5/1.5 perhaps. But no, every last T5 in my area is a 5/5. Should I ever want to finish that column of the grid... well I've not even looked how far I'd have to go. In a similar vein there are 5 loops, total about 110 caches, near me, all lovely woodland walking, but EVERY cache is a 2.5/2.5... I think they were put down in a hurry for a Geolypmix but even so... Just to add my votes to mediocre hides / containers on tough puzzle caches (give us a prize after solving that dadgum cipher!), and bad maintenance / co-ords (there's some commitment involved in becoming a CO...) Overall though, nothing really spoils my enjoyment. I've just had a great weekend caching. 61st and 62nd D/T combos; my 1600th cache was my son's 800th - yes that took some synchronising - some great sunny picturesque walking; 2nd oldest physical cache; can get 365/366 on the calendar this lunchitme; a CITO to look forward to on Thursday; and 3 interlinked puzzle / challenge cache ideas brewing in the back of my mind with a "local cachers" theme. Happy caching and don't get too irked! It's just a game!
  10. At lunch I ticked off #60/81 on the D/T grid, went back to project-gc and increased the radius to help me home in on the missing 21 and found http://coord.info/GC4X2BJ , a 365 challenge, only about 30 miles from home! Some challenges are daft (the ones I can't do... obviously!) but I'll gladly pick this one up for a 5/2.5 as a reward for my efforts.
  11. Next Monday all being well (if the Americans don't send any more hurricanes our way ) I'll fill in calendar day 365/366, just under 22 months since starting out. I imagine I'll be far from the only cacher then waiting patiently for 29th February 2016 to come around?
  12. We've had so much fun Geocaching over the years, discovering new places and getting more smileys, but we recently found out about Geo-Achievements and also enjoy the thrill of reaching those milestones! I realize anyone can make a custom coin, but I'm curious what "official" Geo-Achievement Geocoins are out there, like the ones in the official Geocaching shop :] This is a list I came up with using Shop.Geocaching.com, CoinsandPins.com, and Geological Society of America's EarthCache Masters and EarthCache Discovery (Geocaching HQ blog post about it here) ~ Total Finds: 100 250 500 1K 2K 3K 4K 5K 6K 7K 8K 9K 10K 11K 12K 13K 14K 15K 16K 17K 18K 19K 20K 25K 50K Total Hides: 10 25 50 100 300 400 500 600 Finds Within 24-Hours: 24 48 72 100 150 200 Total EarthCache Finds/Hides: EarthCache Master Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum EarthCache Discovery Awards Quartz, Mica, Garnet, Emerald, Diamond Other Achievements: 31-Straight-Days 365-Days 366-Days Difficulty-Terrain Grid 81 Mile High Club (5280ft elevation) If I'm missing any, please let me know. The only thing I could find for FTF is this FTF Geo-Award Geocoin. Not quite the same thing since it doesn't have the "Geo-Achievement" label on the top edge like all the other coins? It would be nice if they had "10 FTFs," 25, 50, etc.
  13. I looked at this thread title and realized it was in need of something... So anyone still maintaining their streak has met the 365 day challenges (wherever they may be) but will still be missing Feb 29th.
  14. I'll be attending Burning Man (again) this year, but there will be one major difference from previous years... I'm geocaching now, and not only that, attempting 365 days in a row. The Burn is about the only thing that may trip up my streak, but maybe... Just maybe if there are enough caching burners and there's at least one event every day of the burn (there are two already one on Friday and one on Sunday I believe) I may be able to make this happen... with your help! I know I could create my own events for every day but somehow that would feel like cheating. I know there has to be at least a small group of people with passion for both Geocaching and Burning Man. I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep looking for events to pop up on the map! Rosie/RuzNuz/Chicken Little
  15. - zaliczone szesnaste województwo - w końcu! - uzupełniony matrix - 366 dni odhaczyło się 31 lipca - zaliczony power trail w górznieńskich lasach - około 420 znalezień w niespełna 14 godzin - zaliczony roczny streak znalezień - 365 dzień odhaczył się 31 lipca i jedziemy dalej - pękły 2000 znalezień - bez trudu i pośpiechu udało się złapać kolejne 5 FTFów - warszawscy poszukiwacze wybyli? Dzięki temu, w ciągu kilku dni wpadły mi 3 diamentowe badże i wpadłem na ostatnią prostą do złotego PTTK GCPL.
  16. Today (Thursday, July 31), those of us who are still continuing a geocaching streak from last August hit 365 consecutive days with finds. Congratulations everyone!
  17. Can we have the 365 souvenirs of 2015 next?
  18. There are often discussions on here regarding changes to geocaching and many cachers lament the fact that there are not as many challenging caches as in the past, and that there are too many easy caches. The great cacher Olewaif on Prince Edward Island (PEI) has a different view of the situation. First a bit of background. Olewaif has placed many caches and caching series bringing you to interesting places on PEI. Many of his hides have an historical theme regarding such topics as settlers and shipwrecks, etc. The descriptions are often lengthy, very informative and entertaining. PEI is a very small Canadian province and has a very high cache density. There are 7647 active caches for a density of 3499 caches per 1000 square miles or 1351 per 1000 square kms. A good portion of the caches are in series on bike trails,(1800 on the confederation bike trail), hiking trails, in woodlots, on dirt roads, etc. Because of the density, many of the latest series require long bushwacks along rivers and ocean inlets where there are no trails. Olewaif thinks that there is still lots of room for easier caches and is putting out 1 cache a day for the next year. Here is the description on one of these caches. Cacheivus : " A cache series for the rest of us ! It seems there's a growing conviction in many local cachers that there's just no more places on PEI to place a nice little P/G cache.. you know a cache a human being can drive reasonably close to and find fairly easily ( ' if all goes well as DLS loves to add ' ) . So a LOT of the newer cache series are in more remote and challenging locations. I am going to fight back! There IS spots for the seemingly threatened and maligned P/G ! I will show you my children, and just MAYBE a few others will get the hint and hide caches mere mortals can go to , look for , and find. This is such a one and there will be a total of 365 caches ending on April 24/ 2015. I will make them as best I can as ' user friendly '. They will make you drive and maybe hike a bit. They also MIGHT be, at times, tricky hides. I think that's fair. Yes I did indeed get my title from the Seinfeld series " Festivus " A Holiday for the rest of us " episode. Loved it . . .Any comments PAul

No więc, jak to sobie wydedukowałem z tymi FTFami zabrzańskimi. A gospodarz, podobno, winien okazać gościnność. Mój pierwszy pomysł był taki, by wszystkie kesze odpalić w sobotę rano. Komplikowałoby to frekwencję na wykładach i same zjazdy do kopalni, więc zostało to podzielone. Od siebie przepraszam, jeśli Was takim rozwiązaniem rozczarowałem.
  21. Is there anything I can do about this? I found a nearby mountaintop cache four months ago, and it was the only nearby example of that rare breed, a 2/4.5, on the day I found it. In the intervening weeks I finished my Fizzy grid and logged a few D/T challenge caches. Then, today, the CO revamped the page after doing owner maintenance over the weekend. In the process he changed the D/T rating to 2/4. I found a 2/4.5 darn it, not a 2/4. So what if he changed the hide and made it easier afterwards? He's entitled to make changes, of course, but shouldn't anything of this sort be a "from this day forward" change? I guess I'm not going to update mygeocachingprofile.com, the one the public sees, until I find a replacement 2/4.5, the nearest of which, I think, is 180 miles away in the desert in a sweltering spot I'd rather not go until October. I really don't want to unfind--and then later refind--a bunch of D/T challenges. For one, doing so could ruin my daily streak. I'm working on a 365-consecutive day challenge and I have many single-cache days in there, the loss of any of which would torpedo that effort, too. Is this the way D/T records are supposed to work? I didn't find a 2/4, I found a 2/4.5. Shouldn't I retain credit no matter how easy the CO decides to make the cache later on? Who's with me? I'm talking with the CO about this. He's someone I know, so I might be able to get it reversed. (No guarantee, though) Still, this incident begs a lot of questions. And, as a CO, I'll make sure I NEVER change the D/T rating of any of my caches down the road. I'll live with whatever rating I assign it at the time. Doing otherwise could mess up folks who have already found the cache.
  22. For Washington, I would personally not list the Eatonville one, its a weird version of it where you have to have finds in that one city. You may want to add for Washington Calendar: GC40KEM Double Calendar Challenge GC3D7NN Calendar 365 Challenge GC3D7P0 Calendar 366 Challenge GC22BVM Calendar 365 Challenge GC29BV8 Calendar 365 Challenge it would seem both our Placed Dates Challenges are gone, you got the Fizzy and the remaining Jasmer So, that would complete you for Washington State.
  23. My wife & I are compiling a Bookmarked List of certain challenges for all fifty states plus Washington DC. Any help will be appreciated. We are wanting Fizzy Challenges (Well Rounded Geocacher), Jasmer Challenge, Finds on all 365(366) Days of the Year and Finds on all 365(366) Placed Dates of the Year. You can check out our Bookmarked List to see if we are missing any from your own challenge caches or from your part of the United Sates. Fizzy/Jasmer/365 (366) Days/Placed Dates Thanks for any help, Jay
  24. The story goes like this ... ...more than a year ago, one of my FB friends posted something strange, with an icon of a white box and a green cover (TB), and then another day the box had a yellow cover (Multi). Eventually we talked about it and he showed me quickly what geocaching was ("walking with a goal" is how he called it). That wasn't clearly something for me, on one hand I'm pretty good at hiding my car keys at home on D5 places without any effort, and on the other hand my sense of orientation is famous worldwide, I must be one of the few persons in this planet that managed to get completely lost in his hometown Anyway, exactly one year ago, day by day I decided to deviate a few hundred meters in my daily run and try to find "something" I had no clue how it would look like. To my biggest surprise, and thanks to the hint .. I found it !!! exactly 365 days, exactly 500 caches (timing is everything) and 12 countries later I've learned, oh yes I have learned: ... on my first months I learned: - That "Spoiler" is not the name of the dog appearing in all pictures of a local series - That if you think you have to destroy a tree to get to the cache, then you're probably looking at the wrong place. - That cachers aren't necessarily the best friends of trees and chapels - That you don't necessarily have to cache nightcaches by night, and you know what? On daylight is muuuuch easier !! - About creepy creatures hiding under rocks I've never thought would exist - About labradorite, feldspar and many different types of rocks with a looong story behind. I really admire the EarthCaching community, shame there aren't that many EC's around - That on a D1,5 you don't have to climb a tree nor to jump over a wide creek, regardless of what the GPS may think - How stupid I look on a webcam when I'm trying to take a pic with my iphone in the middle of a busy street of "that" website - How frustrated it can be to be a FTA (First to Arrive) and still STF - How great it feels to log your FIRST FTF - That FTF stuff is not for me. My work is stressing enough, and finding a cache as 1000th person can feel as good as being the FTF (honestly) - That FIC (First in Country, I mean my first cache in a given country) is MAGIC - That D/T ratio is country-dependent. A German D1/T1 can be as challenging as a Belgian D2/T2 or a Portuguese D3/T3 ... I can prove that!! - To be thankful to the one that decided not to delete old Virtuals, when you just have one shot on a very remote country, that's the best thing you can land upon - That I'm VERY fortunate to leave in Flanders (Belgium) where we have almost as many caches as inhabitants, and to work in Germany, where definitely there are more caches than citizens - That I can disappear in WW bunkers and climb to (small) trees and enjoy it like a small child - That I will never log a T5 cache (and that's fine) - That a Multi doesn't mean a stash, and then a stash and then ...but that the stash may JUST be the last thing (trust me, it took me a looong time to realize that) - That a "?" cache in a map, may mean a puzzle, or a bonus, or a challenge or an unknown size or ... who knows !! - That, my assumption that geocachers is a secret society of rare organisms coming from outer space hiding millions of objects below our noses wasn't completely accurate. Geocachers seem to be humans!! I've met 3 of them in my 500 caches, and they looked quite normal - That, thanks to attending one of their secret gatherings (they called it "MegaEvents") I realize that not only they are humans, but they look suspiciously similar to me (40-50 years old, kind of easy-going) Then I moved to the next phase .. hiding my own caches !!! And then I learned again, I learned: - Why some of the caches I was searching weren't really on GZ ... because my first ones weren't there either - How crazy FTF seekers may be. You don't want to know on which weather were some of my caches first found - to hate shorts "Found Easily!" logs. Well, if it was D1,5/T1,5 what did they expect, a nano up 20m in a tree somewhere in the Amazon basin? - that some caches have legs. You put them somewhere, then they go somewhere else, then they get back - how tough it can be to convince a reviewer to post a cache, specially a Challenge one - how neighbour-sensitive some caches may be (I had to relocate two, that were on a, presumed, perfectly fine site) And finally ... I even bought TB's !!! and then .. I learned: - that the romantic idea of letting your TB's travel around the world is just that, a romantic idea. I have 3 TB's out there, one hasn't been found yet (challenging cache) and the other two are probably gone for good. - that this point is statistically proven. Out of the many TB's that theoretically should be on the caches I was logging (remember 500 in 12 countries), less than 10% were still there But anyway, I don't want to close this first-year-log on a sad note. Honestly it's been a lot of fun, have discovered many interesting places, sometimes VERY close to home or places I often go to, I've learned a lot about their big or small stories, have georun (more than half of my caches have been logged on some kind of running tour)different paths than the ones I used to, and with every smiley, there was as well a smile on my face Wait, and what now? Well since I discovered a 10 years old nest-cache falling apart in Germany, I've found old caches cute, so I may try to fill in the month-calendar one of these days, other than that there are still 2.000.000 something stories to discover ... I can't wait! Keep on caching !!
  25. I'll be attending Burning Man (again) this year, but there will be one major difference from previous years... I'm geocaching now, and not only that, attempting 365 days in a row. The Burn is about the only thing that may trip up my streak, but maybe... Just maybe if there are enough caching burners and there's at least one event every day of the burn (there are two already yay) I may be able to make this happen. Fingers crossed!
