  1. Okay so for like 2 wks I have been searching the forum, reading reviews on Amazon, reading Garmin's website and talking to fellow cachers. I still can't decide. Want I'd like to know is which one of these will show and make a sound to tell me when to turn and then I can pull it out of the car and go find the cache with adequate accuracy. I own the Explorist 400 and am wondering if the Nuvi 200 will hold 500 POIs and will it do like the Nuvi 550 and show you with an arrow when you are approaching a POI and in which direction. That's the last thing I want to do is use to GPS to find caches but I will if it's more cost effective. I'd like to pull the GPS out of the box with up-to-date road maps and use gsak to transfer caches and walk out the door. Is this possible? I just moved to a new area and I don't own a road gps that will show me where to drive to get there. Completely paperless is cool but not required. I was reading something about special batteries to get the most out of the Oregon what are they and where do you buy them? Are there are threads answering these questions if you'll direct me there I'll read them. Thank you for your time. Seriously I'm torn and just want the best for my money. Getting my car to the cache is my biggest issue right now.
  2. I have looked high and low for the clip that holds the Nuvi 200 in place. All I can find for sale is the suction cup / ball end mount. I already have 2 of these. I need the other end. I have checked with Garmin, aftermarket suppliers and ebay. Why is this simple little clip so hard to find? Clip needed circled in picture below.
  3. I am new to geocaching, I just got my Garmin Oregon 200 on Friday and there are no hints displayed on any of the caches I've loaded onto my device. I've tried loading both the .loc and .gpx files with no luck. The caches and coordinates are displayed but nothing else. I'm sure I'm missing something but can't figure it out. Does anyon have any advice.
  4. So basically I am upgrading my gps. My cousin has suggested these two gps. I am looking mainly for caching features (ofcourse). So right now its the Oregon 200 (or 300) or the Colorado 300. any tips?
  5. Complete package --- shipped FEDEX for $275.00! This sale is for a new condition Garmin Oregon 200 GPS unit that I received as a gift, but already had a similar unit. I used this GPS successfully on 1 trip hiking to Gatlinburg to test and it worked flawlessly. It is a great unit for GC'ing, and I have used this unit a few times to check out the paperless capabilities and it is extremely handy and TREE friendly! Have original Garmin box, paperwork & CD for unit. Unit is in excellent condition and will come with sD card loaded with Topo Maps of USA + copy of Topo08 on DVD. Also include fresh AA batteries and I also purchased the official Garmin carabiner that comes standard with the Oregon 300, 400 units --- really nice clip that is perfect for this unit. Unit itself is selling for $321 new on Amazon, not to mention the Topo08, sDmicro card & Garmin carabiner clip --- will sell entire package for $275 shipped fedex (my expense) to lower 48 in the USA. I am also an active member of GC'ing --- and if any Louisiana Geocachers are interested --- please contact me ASAP. I am located in Mandeville, LA and member of lageocachers.com I ACCEPT PAYPAL and I HAVE PERFECT FEEDBACK ON EBAY SINCE 2001. Please check out my profile on GC.com if you need further info. Thanks! Andy
  6. The site locked up on when I posted this one. I apologize for two posts, but since this one is empty, please disregard it.
  7. I just purchased the City Navigator North America NT DVD so that I could install it on an SD card for my Oregon 200. I'm not sure if I put the unlock code on the GPS or on the SD card when it asks for the device. I'll have to store the maps on the card because of the small amount of memory on the 200. I'm a little confused. I've been doing some searching on the Garmin site as well as other locations on the web, but I've had no luck. Can anyone help?
  8. I have been geocaching with some other moms and our 2 yr old sons. It's lots of fun but this week we are 0 for 4. We have searched for 4 caches and not found a single one. I am using a Garmin Nuvi 200 and wonder if that is part of the problem. It is the kind of GPS you use in your car but I can load the caches onto it from this website and/or put int he longitude and latitude for each cahce. We have found several caches using the Nuvi but our stretch of misses is making em think we are doing something wrong. I really dont have the money to invest in another GPS.Hasanyone usd the Nuvi or something smilar and had any luck with geocaching? Thanks, Stacy Tampa, FL
  9. and I need some help on which GPS I should buy. I have a Garmin Etrex H already that I will be selling it off when I get a new one. I have a TOTAL of 200 dollars budget, so I need one that will fit My spending limit while still being wonderful for geocaching. any ideas?
  10. Ran across another deal today -- act fast, it may be gone by this evening. This is the stripped model without the DEM shaded maps, wireless, compass and altimeter. Might be a good entry-level GPS for those who want a touch screen. They also had some deals on Oregon and Colorado units with the inland lakes and coastal waterways maps if anyone needs them.
  11. For sale is my Garmin Oregon 200. Minimal, adult use for 10 days. Only went out to two caches...it's still cold here. Always had screen protector installed. It's a fine unit, I just picked up a 400T for the extra features. - Updated to latest firmware (2.86). - 2GB card - Mapsource City Navigator North America NT 2009 updated maps installed on card. Routable. Did not install Mexico maps. Maps use appx 1GB on the card. - Caribiner clip. Had to buy separately. - Lanyard - USB cable - Extra screen protector - Original box and documentation. My feedback elsewhere is excellent: RCGroups Ebay $275 shipped CONUS. Paypal , MO, CC. Thanks, Matt
  12. Well, i would think anyone in the world would have better ideas on what to look for then me, so, have at it! =D -Thanks in advance! Moonrakerone
  13. I bought the Oregon 200 for $259.99 because I already had a copy of Topo 2008. In addition, I was able to install City Navigator NT on it for free because Garmin gave me a new install code because I lost my my Legend HCx which came bundled with it. I bought a new 8GB Micro SD card for $10 and loaded all of my maps on it and I still have tons of room to spare! Anybody remember when you would happily go geocaching on a unit with 8MB, not GB, of memory! I thought about spending a little more to get the compass and barometer. NOT! I never needed it before and I don't need it now. The Paperless caching saves a ton of time if you download the pocket queries from Geocaching.com. I shredded the logbook that I used to carry around. The screen is very hard to read in direct sunlight when the shading is turned on and it looks awesome at night. But, if you turn the shading off and have the white background, then the screen is just as readable as my old Legend HCx in direct California sunlight. I'll never go back to a non-touch screen GPS. Also, I upraded to 2.86(?)which is the latest beta software for the Oregon and I am now getting readings in the 9ft range. It took me to several Geocaches today without a problem (very accurate). By the way, you can store your .gpx files on either the unit or the SD card. I don't see any performance hits by loading it on the SD vs. the internal memory. In my humble opinion, the Oregon 200 is a real winner. Oh, I almost forgot. I have seen City Navigator NT on Amazon for as little as 67.00 and the TOPO for 74.99.
  14. I have a used magellan triton 200 in excellent used condition. Includes basemap. I'm selling it because I have a new Magellan explorist 400. I can email pictures!
  15. I am considering purchasing an Oregon 200. I have searched and read the threads here, the wiki faq on the Oregon, and the Garmin Oregon manual pdf. I've read the difference between the 200 and the 300 is the 200 doesn't have the electronic compass, altimeter, audio tones, wireless communication, NMEA serial communication, or alarm clock. And the 200 has the 24MB internal compared to the much larger of the 300 or 400 series. I have a few remaining questions on the 200: 1. Is there tide info on the 200? If so, is it using the tidal charts from the map "GPSMAP 16/168 Tide Points" from the dowloaded "RecommendedMapSourceUSTidesSoftware.exe" file? Does it show the same info as in Mapsource using this map (Tide Prediction window)? Does it show the tidal graph? 2. With Topo 2008 loaded on to a 200 does the 3-D view work (using DEM I believe it's called)? Does it look as good as the 400T, or the 300 loaded with Topo 2008? 3. Is there shaded relief of terrain using the 2-D looking-straight-down-from-above view on the 200 (standard map view)? 4. For the gps compass (non electric compass that it doesn't have), how much do I need to be moving for it to give me a compass reading? Is walking 5-10 feet (2-4 steps) enough to get a useful reading? Is walking a fast enough rate of movement to get quick and useful readings? I understand the advantage of the electric compass is it works when you aren't moving, but if the gps compass works by just moving a short distance on foot then it's probably adequate. (I realize this has been covered a lot and people have differing opinions) 5. Even though there is no altimeter on the 200, does it have the "Elevation Plot" page using the gps readings (instead of altimeter readings)? If not, is there a way to review a track/route's elevation changes over time/distance (like the track profile, or vertical profile of routes on the 60csx)? 6. Using the altimeter as a barometer to predict the weather. Has anyone done this? Does it work well? Seems like it could be neat and fun if it worked. 7. For the sun/moon page, does it give the location of the sun/moon in the sky, or where it will rise on the horizon the way the 60csx does (like the "Celestial Information" window in Mapsource)? Does the 200 do the "animate moon phases" like the 60csx? Thanks in advance for the help!
  16. I just bought a Oregon 200 and was trying to load caches into it. On my old Garmin I would just hit send to GPS and it would find it. Can you not do that anymore with the Oregon? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  17. I have City Navigator from a Garmin GPS 18. I was wondering if there is a way to install the maps onto my Garmin Oregon 200 so that it will do turn-by-turn. Thanks for your help!
  18. I am looking to sell both my Meridian Gold and Explorist 200. The Meridian comes with the auto power cord, a 2Gb memory card, and a case. It only exhibits some wear and tear. The Explorist comes with a wrist strap, and is in like new condition. It hasn't seen much use since I got the Meridian. $125 for both, or 75$ for the Meridian and 50$ for the Explorist 200. Also willing to consider trades for Garmin models. Shipping is extra, probably about $10-15 by USPS, depending on where you live. I will ship to US only, exceptions available for Service Members, as I appreciate what you do. Please contact me by email if you are interested.
  19. Hello, I recently bought a new Explorist 200 from a local retailer. I noticed it wasn't utilizing WAAS as it should have been. Called Magellan support and they said it is a firmware issue that can no longer be addressed. They offered to exchange my Explorist 200 out for a Triton 300. It seems like a good deal to me. But I started reading reviews on the Triton 300 and they mostly seemed negative. I also noticed that they were older posts generated when the Triton's were first released. Here's where I need your help if you don't mind, please. I really like the Explorist and from what I've seen, the Tritons have very similar menus and feel. Can any Triton users here give me some opinions on their units? Also, how do they compare to the Explorist series? I really appreciate your help!
  20. REI is selling the Oregon 200 for $259.83
  21. Greetings and salutations This is my first post on this forum, I hope it is in the right category. I'm planning to buy my first handheld GPS device (I already have Garmin Nuvi 200 for in-car navigation), and I will use it for: photo geotagging and track logging (most important - I want to turn it on, put it on my backpack and forget about it for ~12 hours) navigation (in cities as a pedestrian, I travel a lot) geocaching (least important) After few days/weeks of reading every possible review, I have narrowed my choice to two models: Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Pros Price (~210 euros) Battery life (I read it is about 22-24 hours?) Can save tracklog to SD card Wrist strap + belt clip Looks pretty durable [*]Cons Screen and interface (it looks OK on this photo, however, it is really ugly on this one) Garmin Oregon 200 Pros Screen Touchscreen interface [*]Cons Price (~360 euros) Battery life (10-12-14 hours?) Can not save tracklog to SD card Lanyard + carabiner, no belt clip (only 3rd party) I do not need features like barometric altimeter and electronic compass, so I picked Legend over Vista and Oregon 200 over Oregon 300. Now, I have few questions: 1. Oregon can save 20 tracks with 10.000 points. Does that mean, if it logs my position every second, one track will last 10.000 seconds = less than 3 hours? 2. What will happen when I fill one track with 10k points? Will it continue automaticaly with another track? 3. Can I use map for navigation while track is logged in background (multitasking) ? 4. Can I load Garmin NT maps to eTrex? 5. This page says that eTrex comes with wrist strap but I am unable to find a photo of it. Is it a true wrist strap like for Foretrex and/or Forerunner ? For now, I'm leaning towards eTrex (because of price and battery life primarely), but interface on Oregon is so much better Any suggestion will be appreciated Thanks
  22. Hi, new to geocaching and need to buy a handheld. These two are similarly priced but which would be best for my new hobby? Can either be used to navigate in a car? Am UK based but will be visiting USA and Canada soon. Will the basemaps cover these areas or do I need to purchase more maps so I can hunt caches over the pond? Thanks Mike
  23. I have a brand new Garmin Oregon 200 GPS that is brand new still in sealed box for sale. I ordered one and then got one for Christmas, so instead of returning the item, I am going to give a fellow GC'er a chance to purchase. I also will include a brand new 4GB MicroSD card that is loaded with all Topo2008 maps in USA. Will sell it all packaged & shipped via FEDEX to lower 48 for $305.00 --- I accept Paypal, and I am an active Geocaching member. Hope this helps someone move up to this great line of GPSr units & get out there! Saintroad
  24. I was wondering if you could load geocaches on this unit through the SD card slot and if so how hard would it be to get them to work . Thanks
  25. I went to best buy and they didn't have the data cable, besides the associate was really rude, he pointed and said, they should be over there. So far this GPS has been working great for me but I want to be able to load coordiantes and maps from the computer.
