  1. Hello, I've been Geocaching for a few weeks now with my Nuvi 350 and have decided to buy a handheld GPS. I was going to get the Garmin 60Cx, but when I got to Costco they were out of that model and had the Oregon 200 for $20 more than what the 60Cx would cost. Now I don't know if I should get the Oregon, or go to Walmart for the 60Cx. So, I am wondering if you had to choose between these uniits, which would you buy? Many thanks, Michele
  2. Can a Nuvi 200 sync with City Streets or anything else? I need to have a database of the waypoints. Thanks, Joey
  3. I need a bit of help. I use a Mac, and have always used a Garmin Edge 205 for all my geocaching - until it recently packed up and died. I bought an Oregon 200 and have been very excited about it so far - but I've found that I'ev been unable to load my pocket query into it! MacCaching doesn't work with the Oregon anymore, complaining about a USB interface problem. I downloaded GeoJournal for the Mac, but it doesn't seem to include the Oregon in its support list either. Can someone help and give me some suggestions of what else I can try? Thanks in advance! artemisworks
  4. When turning on my Garmin 200, a prompt is coming up that says "maximum number of gpx files exceeded" How do i delete some? Would this prevent me from downloading further caches?
  5. I'm wanting to know if there is a way to delete the "Found Caches" off my unit? If I can't, will it use up all the memory on the unit? I have logged 100 caches, so far and am wanting to clear them off it at all possible?
  6. Im looking a purchasing a noew GPS unit. Im looking at buying either the Garmin Oregon 200 or the Lowrance Out & Back. Could you please advise the pros and cons and what you think is the better buy. Also, does anyone know if the Out & Back can recieve geocaching files directly from Geocaching.com as the Garmin units can? Thanks!
  7. @Mineral2 I thank you very much for the suggestion above. I now have a GPSMAP 66i, and tested with the settings you provided. Prior to the test, I modified the Trip Computer page: (1) I retained “Elevation” in the upper most left column slot, (2) I replaced the next slot down with “GPS Elevatiom, (3) I replaced the upper most right column slot with “Barometer”, and (4) I replaced the next slot down with “Ambient Press.”. I then changed the Auto Calibration to “Off” and the Barometer Mode to “Fixed Elevation”. Additionally, I manually selected the Calibrate Altimeter Method of Current Elevation to Calibrate to 200 ft. Walking along the level Green Belt (about 100 yards off the shore) in Sunset Beach, CA, I recorded about a ½ mile track. As I walked the Elevation slot displayed a constant value of 200 ft. while the GPS Elevation slot displayed between 9 ft. and 15 ft., which was reasonable. After concluding the walk, I synced to the Explore app on my phone and viewed the elevation profile as a constant 200 ft. Conclusion, these Altitude settings resulted in the barometric elevations being recorded and not the GPS derived elevations. My next test was to set the Auto Calibration to “Continuous” and the Barometer Mode to “Variable Elevation”.Additionally, I manually selected the Calibrate Altimeter Method of GPS Altitude and selected “Calibrate”. I then drove up and down a hill, while not recording a track, of about 50 feet and noticed that the Elevation and GPS values were identical. Now, selecting “Start” to record the track, I noticed that the values for Elevation and GPS Elevation varied by a few feet, with the Elevation being a few feet higher than the GPS Elevation values/ Actually, they both decreased going down the hill and increased going up. On basically a level street, they both went up and down slightly, with the Elevation values always slightly higher than the GPS Elevation values. Conclusion: Referring back to the top, with the two top fields, on the left, being Elevation above GPS Elevation, it is the top most, Elevation values that always are recorded. When Altitude calibrated to GPS and Continous selected, the top most value is GPS. However, when not recording, both fields are identical while there are slight differences when recording.

  9. Celebrate 20 years of geocaching at Community Celebration Events Beginning today, eligible geocachers can apply to host Community Celebration Events in 2020. These events will enable cachers around the world to commemorate the 20th anniversary of geocaching with a new icon and souvenir. This cache type was originally known as the Lost and Found Event Cache. It was created for events that were hosted by geocachers from April 30, 2010 to May 3, 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching. Just 362 Lost and Found Events were held, so a very limited number of cachers earned the icon. We’re excited that many thousands more cachers will have a chance to celebrate a big anniversary and get the redesigned icon in 2020! To be eligible to apply to host a Community Celebration Event, you must meet the following criteria: Attendance: You must have attended at least two (2) Events or CITOs within the last three (3) years (between December 2, 2016 and December 2, 2019). Activity: You must have logged a cache within the past six (6) months (between June 2, 2019 and December 2, 2019). If you meet the criteria, apply via the opt-in page by June 3, 2020. If you own multiple Geocaching.com accounts, please apply with only one account. Each month from January through October, at least 2,020 hosts will be randomly selected from those who opt-in (with geographic distribution). If selected, you will receive one of 20,200 or more Community Celebration Events! All official community volunteers (reviewers, moderators, and translators), and the primary accounts for all 2020 Mega- and Giga-Events will receive a Celebration Event. Winners must host events between May 2, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Events must be a minimum of two hours, and cannot overlap with events associated with a Mega- or Giga-Event. For more guidance, see the Help Center article on Community Celebration Events. Between Community Celebration Events and the Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration in Seattle, 2020 is shaping up to be quite a party! Here are answers to some common questions: How did you choose the number of Community Celebration Events to be released worldwide? Since we’re turning 20 in the year 2020, we think the best way to celebrate is with more than 20,200 birthday parties around the world! To provide the best experience for all attendees and to prevent over-saturation, we’re offering a limited, special release of the icon. Why are you distributing 2,020 per month, instead of giving them all at once? We believe there will be a lot of excitement about publishing these events. We want to distribute the effort of reviewing them by community volunteer reviewers over time. And we hope this helps minimizes people choosing the same date and time for their event. I just submitted my request for a Community Celebration Event Cache, when will I find out whether I receive one? The applicants selected to host a Community Celebration Event will be notified via email between January and October 2020. If you misplace the email, the Event page will be created on your Geocaching.com account and will display in your list of unpublished caches. Applicants who are not selected will not be notified. I don’t qualify to host a Community Celebration Event, what can I do? You may not qualify to host this particular cache type, but you are still eligible to host a regular Event Cache with your own celebration theme! I want to celebrate a geocaching anniversary on a specific date, what can I do? Unfortunately, selected event hosts won’t be determined ahead of time, so we are unable to honor requests for cachers with a specific date in mind. We recommend hosting a regular Event Cache with your own celebration theme, instead. I received the opportunity to host a Community Celebration Event Cache, how soon can I submit it to my reviewer for publishing? Community Celebration Events may be submitted for review up to six (6) months and no less than two (2) weeks in advance of your chosen Event date. How long do I have to submit my Community Celebration Event Cache for review? Events may be hosted May 2, 2020 through December 31, 2020. The final date to submit the cache page of your Community Celebration Event is December 17, 2020. I just logged drafts for finding a cache or attending Events or CITOs, why don’t I qualify to host this Event? All logging activity must have occurred prior to December 2, 2019 to qualify. Although the date of your draft may have been before this date, the date you submitted the draft is ineligible. How do I find a Community Celebration Event happening near me? We’re glad you asked! View a list of Community Celebration Events here. (This information is also available in the Geocaching Blog.)
  10. The new "ENHANCED" search sucks! I cannot do things easily like we used to be able to. It does not use my home coords....shows me things 200+ miles or more away when looking for local things....doesn't show both D & T. So many issues, NOT USER FRIENDLY....why change something that wasn't broke! I dislike this update very much!
  11. Hi folks!, Don't laugh. The Explorist 200 was free and it has been a very trusty little unit. Anyway, the accuracy is ok, just the clock has seemed to slip 3 seconds. I had this problem before and fixed it with a recommendation from this forum. I did a search here but can't seem to find anything on this particular subject. I did a clear and dump but it didn't work for the clock (and I had two WAAS birds, now I only have one. I knew that might happen). Time to go shopping I think. Wayne
  12. Hi everyone! We are very new to this. Haven't even found our first cache yet. We have an Oregon 200 and the maps seem to be horrible!!! I've done some searching on the web, but haven't figured out how to update the maps yet. Can someone help me with this??? It would be great if it was cheap to do too! lol Thanks! April TeamDavisPerson
  13. downloaded some geocaches to my gps, no longer need them, how do i remove/delete them from my gps? this is new to me and my gps didnt come with a geocaching for dummies manual. looked on line for users manual and no where in it can i find how to remove geocaches.............help
  14. After some of you guys had good luck with the free NUVI 200 giveaway, I decided to give it a go. Signed up, which does include your personal info (which made me nervous at first). But, I figured Discover is a big name company and wouldnt mind having a Discover card anyway. Signed up for it and bought grocerys and a tank of gas. Not exactly sure how long ago it was, (maybe 2 months ago or so) and I get a box in the mail, which is a brand new NUVI 200. Unbelievable. I figured I would get junk mail for sure and havent yet (well anymore than I already do), and never get a junk call on my cell phone because I didnt use my correct cell phone number. I am normally pretty reluctant about these things, but I actually like my Discover card and didnt have to jump through hoops or anything to get a GPS. This NUVI goes well with my Vista HCX, which Im letting the 'ol lady use. Im not recommending this at all, just told everybody I would report back on my personal experience. Glad I did it!!
  15. Wow. This Oregon is so much easier to use than the Venture HC I accidentally donated to a river. The touch screen is easy to use. The paperless geocaching is great. I loaded 100 or so closest to my house in no time - and it's so easy to find them and the details and whatnot. The screen is huge in comparison and the resolution is wonderful. It's very clear and easy to use. My only problem so far is that I need to add a TON of memory. That's the main feature I wanted - was the ability to add a card. I'll pick up an 8GB card on the way home and play some more tonight. I'm hoping to figure out some Google Earth transfers (both ways). Once I've got it out in the field some and found a few caches with it, I'll write a proper review. I've also got to upgrade the firmware (O/S?). I intend to get City Navigator and hope that I'll be able to use it to get close to a cache, then switch over to the 100:1 Topo map to get from the parking spot to the cache. If it'll do that smoothly and effectively, I will be major-league stoked. Also, if I can put in waypoints I find on Google Earth to be able to drive to them and then hike to the next, I will be thrilled. I've been spending a lot of time on Google Earth looking for new fishing locations, and would love to be able to work it out with the GPSr. - Zurfco p.s. Thanks to everyone who have been so helpful to me already. I'm sure I'll have a million more questions. Your patience with a new GPSr user is greatly appreciated.
  16. i cant get it to down load description in using GSAK do i need to use something diffrent or am i doing something wrong?
  17. Hi, After a few months I am upgrading my GPS unit so I have this Triton 200 for sale. The unit has very light use, I don't have the original box but I have manual and CD that came with it.
  18. I have a 10-year old Magellan that I used for hunting and fishing. Old and slow. I started geocaching with my kids over the weekend. They love it. Spent all weekend (evenings) researching an excuse to get a new GPS. I think I want the Garmin Oregon. I definitely want color, I like the touchscreen, I want to be able to choos which maps I want, topo is very nice (I'm also an adventure racer, and although GPS's are a no-no it would be great for training). I want it to work well for: - hunting (mark deer stand, wander around, get back) - fishing (enter coordinates and go to) - geocaching (not really sure what I need, sounds like "paperless" geocashing would be nice). I am a techie-type person, but for the life of me after reading the reviews, specs, etc. on the 3 models (200, 300, 400) I can't find an answer to these questions. Please help. - Why is the amount of RAM important? They all store the same amount of waypoints and geocaches. - If the maps come on a separate card, what's the RAM used for? - If it's important, then I'd conclude the 300 is a better value considering how much more RAM it has for not much more $ (24Mb vs. 850Mb). - Does the 400 come with built-in maps or does it come with a map card? - If it's built-in, does that mean I can add a card and have multiple maps available at the same time, i.e buy the 400t and add a lake map? - Can I recharge the rechargeable batteries while in the GPS? Why don't they make these things rechargeable??? What a pain. Just like my walkie-talkies, cell phone, etc. I want to just plug it in to charge it. Basically, why would I buy a 200, 300 or 400 if the map cards are ~$100 each? Any help to a newbie would be greatly appreciated.
  19. i've been doing a bit of reading on the Oregon 200 and it looks like a very nice upgrade to my Legend HCx. the Legend has been my first GPS and it's served me well although there are features on the Oregon that look very tempting. 99% of my caching is paperless and for that i use my iPhone with the Geocaching app. it works great but i have to load caches onto the HCx and then "Find" the GC codes on the phone and save them on my SAVED page before i head out (or while i'm out)... using the Oregon would simplify this process as well as allow me to save the precious battery life on the iPhone and not risk having it fall in a puddle or onto rocks (which it has). i'm just wondering if i should move to the Oregon, or stick with the HCx/iPhone combo. has anyone else made the same comparison and gone with one or the other? thanks

  21. Does anyone know how to download multiple caches at once. One at a time is tedious.
  22. The Pharos PDR 200 has a WinCE 5.0 OS. Does anyone know if you can change the mapping s/w maybe put Wherigo player on it? Just wondering because my Legend HCX doesn't support Wherigo and currently the pharos is around $70. Thanks!
  23. barefootjeff - I think that your solution will work for me. I hope you will help me with sourcing and use of the light-dependent resistor you mentioned. So, the device I have and wish to hack is a Bunker Hill PIR Sensor coupled by RF to a receiver that sounds an alert and blinks an LED when the PIR detects proximity. I like the Transmitter/Receiver package as it is EZ and I can place the Receiver about 200 feet away from the Sensor and the whole shebang cost $12, Etc. I originally thought I could find an EZ way to hack the Receiver circuit board to act as a momentary switch to trigger the Sound Card I mentioned. Then it dawned on me that I would not have to do anything to the devices - just leave them as packaged except for silencing the speaker- by using your solution. The sound card is activated by a simple push of a momentary switch and then the sound device takes off with the recording. It seems that I could tape/mount a light-dependent resistor over the LED. I would connect the LDR leads and replace the momentary switch. Then when the LED lights up, I assume that the LDR would act as a switch and activate the sound card just like momentary switch does. What do you think and what LDR would you recommend ?
  24. Hi All, Before I bought the device I thought I would get accuracies within a few feet in in around where I live (Cincinnati) with the WAAS system. I buddy of mine who works for the city told me a couple of years ago they use it and got accuracies that good (for locating things in the field). Am I not using it right (I do have WAAS turned on)? Or is it still reasonable to see 15-20 foot accuracy even though I'm definately near cell phone towers. (Maybe they all don't work with WAAS?) Thanks, dan
