  1. Maybe the "Social Butterfly" souvenir will fall in November, be event related, and will encourage people to attend GIFF events, since that's happening November 8th-12th.
  2. Since "Adrenaline Junkie" was the first one, I assume the other ones are the other three souvenirs. If these were listed in the order they'll occur, then the next one would be "Caching Connoisseur". I'm not sure what the idea behind that one might be. Maybe extra points for caches with lots of Favorite Points, or for finding some of the less common cache types? Based on the very lenient requirements for the first souvenir, I expect "Social Butterfly" will probably be attained by hosting or attending one event of any type, and "Trackable Lover" for dropping a trackable or two. Yeah, I've wondered about that too. Further evidence pointing in this direction is: Maybe "You might be an Ultimate Geocacher if..." for getting the other four? Solid thinking there. My money says you're right.
  3. From the original blog post, these were listed: Since "Adrenaline Junkie" was the first one, I assume the other ones are the other three souvenirs. 4. I was thinking of the Butterfly Garden cache in Singapore airport. I knew I'd seen photos of another one inside an airport but couldn't remember where it was. There's also an earth cache in Denver airport and another earth cache *under* the airport in Dubrovnik, Croatia. My favorite "indoor" cache is one in a tunnel under a river in Hamburg, Germany.
  5. Possibly. But I think the Social Butterfly challenge will give events double points, rather than counting the points earned by friends. We'll see.
  6. July 3 Admiral Butterfly seen while on an outing gathering specimens for the herbarium at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Near Laguna Drive-By (GC1VJG2). Aug 4 Monarch Butterfly seen on visit to Butterfly Garden and Pidgeon seen in Ye (Old) Cactus Garden in Balboa Park near Balboa Park International Exchange (GCRDT7). Check out the Monarch Butterfly Website for more info.
  7. Okay - for all your northern hemisphere cachers, it is not spring here! I have to wait another six months for that! Here in South Pacific New Zealand, we are just entering the cooler days, but still caching, as where I am located there is unlikely to be snow on the ground. During the coller months though our caching weekends are less often, and less likely to be treks! But for those fortuntate enough we may get to fly north..... and that's what I am REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO this year. All going well, I hope to cache on sacred ground. Although not all caches are there, I hope to find at least one of four caches located at Angkor Wat, Cambodia. And maybe several in Singapore on the stop over. I just it will be a taste of spring during our cooler months - though nearer the equator there are only 2 seasons - wet and dry, while further away there are four! What is best about going there to cache, is that it is butterfly country! If anyone knows me, then they will know I LOVE butterflies. We have so few here, and only the Monarch as a mid size (and our largest) butterfly. We do have a tropical butterfly house that is a controlled environment, but none free.... so Cambodia has a huge attraction (lets not discuss other creepy, stingy, bitey bugs though!)
  8. How much time to you have in Singapore? If I recall, it takes about a half hour on the train from their airport to the central city but if you have the time it's worth visiting. You can also just stay near Changi and there are a few caches near the airport or if you have time, you can take a boat over to Pulau Bin island, rent a bicycle and find a bunch there. Don't forget the Butterfly Garden cache, a traditional in the airport. Where are you going in Malaysia? I went from Singapore directly to Sarawak region (aka Borneo) to a nice little town of Kuching. I picked up countries #28 (Kenya) and #29 (United Kingdom) on my most recent trip. There is a decent possibility that I'll be going back to Kenya in November and that I can combine it with a conference in Gaborone, Botswana. I didn't do as much geocaching as I had planned in Kenya. I had originally planned on visited the Karura forest park which has quite a few caches but a meeting got rescheduled and jet lag got in the way. I was only able to stop at two locations where there were caches during the 9 days I was in the country. One of them was in Masai Mara reserve (while on a 3 day safari). We stopped for a bathroom break and to pay the entrance fee (our driver did that) and I jumped out and started to walk towards the cache there. I got to within 20 feet when an armed guard stopped me and said I couldn't go any further without an escort. As we were about to continue the drive another guard said he'd take me across the bridge across the Mara river (which, apparently is full of crocodiles and hippos, thus the requirement of an armed escort) but we didn't stop on the way back through. The cache was apparently "20 steps from the start of the bridge". My only find was an earthcache at the Great Rift Valley overlook.
  9. Hi everybody, this topic is not that recent but I'm new in geocaching and I read the old topics which are all interesting for a neocacher as me. I choose my nickname because of the metaphor of the butterfly. "When a caterpillar makes its transformation into a butterfly, it is not an easy process. The little butterfly struggles to break free of the cocoon. In that very process of struggling to get out, the butterfly exercises its wing muscles and builds up the necessary strength to fly. If someone compassionately cut open the cocoon to make it easier for the butterfly, it will never gain the strength to fly. Instead it just dies." I feel close to this metaphor because I managed my life myself and I am happy to make my own decision. And I think that bad experiences always have someting positive. what doesn't kill you make you stronger, don't you agree ? the number is the number of my county in France (other people choose chrysalis, so, I had to add a number) happy cache

  17. I got a huge box in the mail today from a dear sweet friend. When I opened the box I found another box but this box was a beauty! Something that I really am passionate about. Inside that box I found a box of melty smooth and pastel mints (it went straight to the fridge), Huckleberry flavored gourmet bar, huckleberry taffy (I tasted all of that and all of it was delicious), got a Eiffel Tower photo clip holder, a Eiffel Tower statue, an Idaho post card, butterfly 2012-2013 pocket planner, little know facts about Paris book, explore the world journal book, 3 butterfly magnets, a butterfly 2010 geocoin, a manikin TB to travel and something else I'm really not sure what it is? It looks like a cup holder or some kind of container. Thank you so much Eseurat (Erin) for everything. Everything was perfect!! The beautiful box... The goods...
  18. That's basically what I say too. Drawing a line for who "participated" in a find s 100% arbitrary. If someone who carried a bag, or even just supported people with their presence as a friend, affected the group, who knows if it wouldn't have been found otherwise. It's the butterfly flapping its wings causing a hurricane thing... Scenario: If a group caching and signing under one name agrees and decides whose name is associated with the log signature for a trail series, that's different than a CO deciding for them. For instance, maybe 10 people go down the trail, but 1 person leaves the group after 2 finds. The group might decide that say the first couple of caches included them, and the rest didn't. If that person logs the next 8 but wasn't there, the group could let the CO know or support the CO's choice to delete that individual's find logs, because everyone is claiming they were not with the group ('caching under the group name') for those last 8, only the first 2. This is another reason some people on "important" cache finds will request their individual name be signed on the logsheet (or do it themselves) just as insurance against any potential confusion or debate about naming. This situation is so unbelievably rare though that it's not really worth being concerned about. Point being, claims caching under a name have to be supported by others caching under the name, if disputed by the CO. If there's such a dispute and say even the CO's choice is potentially argumentative, then it'll go to appeals. And when it comes to who "participated" with the find, well I suppose it's majority rule... but personally I don't draw that arbitrary line as a rule; if anything, a case by case basis. A more common scenario: What if the driver waits in the car while 2 others hike 100m to the cache and sign everyone in? As a driver, some might not claim the find, but some will citing their participation (it wouldn't have been found if no one was taken there); either way the CO can't delete the find if the name is signed. In a case like that, it's not worth getting worked up over. Let someone claim how they do with their ethics. They're only letting themselves miss out on the experience to the cache (whatever that may be).
  19. Box #19 arrived. It was packed by Butterfly Lady and was full with stuff from New Zealand . We visited NZ a couple of years ago and it is one of our favorite countries so we had to smile about all the things. Here is what we got out of the box first: Then there was a kind of a kiwi invasion and very nice coins (Vote Democratic-Republican/ Canterbury Earthquakeand an activated Red_eyed_tree-Frog), leaf pin and charm and a wooden nickel - have a look at all the nice things: To tell the truth I had to say goodby to the kiwis very fast because they were taken by someone else Thank you very much Butterfly Lady for this great mission, we love everything!!!! And thank you very much WSR for this great, great, great mission which was so much fun!!!! Edited to add: There was a Caching on the Moon coin also in the package - wow, now I own a square meter of the moon ! Thank you so much, Butterfly Lady!
  20. Cache - A Night of Terror..................... Somewhere in New Zealand. Cachers - myself (a butterfly that likes to be able to see where she is going) and RadioNut50 (who really is the addicted cacher, though does not log them) The time of day - dark! The cache Notes: Reece was out pig hunting with two friends deep in the bush out the back of Ngaruawahia. Although they found heaps of sign that the pigs were about they hadn't managed to find one. Late in the day they agreed to separate for a while so Reece could place his very first Geocache. Not long afterwards Reece's mates heard a blood curdling scream. They headed towards where they thought the noise had come from and tried to find Reece, presuming it was him that had made the noise. The two searched until nightfall, but couldn't find any sign of him in the dense undergrowth. Reece was a seasoned hunter and bushman, and had his GPS with him, and despite it being a Magellan they were hopeful he might still make his own way out … but the scream played on their minds. Well Butterfly & her nut creep along the narrow path that climbs up above the watery stream, sometimes muddy etc... till the glints show the way. Working out where to go each time was tough as no one had found this cache prior and the glints were far apart..... Eventually realised we had to go up vertically - in the dark of the NZ thick bush! The bank was at least five times the height of Butterfly and she was certainly challenged - took at least 15 minutes to get that part done.... finding a stable footing before moving on each time. To the top and no more glints to be seen. So the Nut went out one direction and returned, then another etc.... repeating until a glint could be found. The butterfly trying not to panic alone in the thick bush..... Cold, dark, owls hooting, the bray of a distant donkey etc.... The close flutter of night birds, the scampering of rodents and knowing there were wild pigs in the area (well imagining, rather than knowing, but having read the cache notes - who knows?) Luck would have it, that within 90 minutes of starting the search we eventually reached what looked like the cache site.... We pulled back the dead fern covers to find a small black tarpulin. Under that we found a coffin.... Open the lid and..... A wild scream could be heard! Red eyes flashing! Spiders, a vampire! and a FTF! Getting back down that vertical bit again and back along the track.... What a buzz for days to come. The cache had been published for 10 days before we got it.... others seem too afraid to venture....
  21. Here are two more auctions, courtesy of RCSAENSD! Check it out: Inuksuk Geocoin If you're interested, you can read more about the Inuksuk Geocoin project, then head on over and take a look at the auction. Crake Malachite Butterfly Geocoin One Christopher Rake's clean & classic butterfly design from 2008. It would be an excellent addition to any collection and it's a must-have for butterfly aficionados. As ever, thanks for looking and thanks for your support!
  22. Okay, now that I have mailed my box, I wanted to post a couple pictures of what I received. I got a KISS mission from Penny+Kona, with a nice card and letter, as well as a beautiful Morpho Butterfly for me to keep, and a traveling Tree Frog to get moving in the world. Here are the two coins: Here is another shot of the butterfly: Thanks again, the butterfly is very nice, I love the hinged effect. I noticed that butterflies were pretty common in this mission too, but like in real life, there are many different varieties.
  23. That may explain some of the false positives we're seeing with the CHS. As a cache owner I can only express my opinions and hope it makes enough sense for someone to consider changing the way they do things. Butterfly effect.
  24. Just going through my collection and weeding it out. Each coin is $10. Shipping is $2.95 for the first coin plus $1 for each additional coin. Payment through Paypal only.
