Hey Anton.....I went to a couple of your caches on Thursday! Thanks for such great outings!! I am a speech pathologist...teacher of the speech and hearing handicapped. Right now I work with pre-k exclusively but advertise geocaching every chance I get. I use the yellow messenger bag that is sold on geocaching.com as a briefcase for my papers....... I am also in the process of setting up some geocaching with teachers at school...Would like to have Eversure son and Butterfly girl talk to their classes about it as well...... But they are both on the shy side. Anyways, I standing up!! Have a great new year's eve..... DxChallenged

im thinking about trying some night time caching. reading over the post from ppl who have tried it, they seemed to really enjoy it, and it appelled to me. the thing is im not sure how well i could watch the trails with my flashlight or NVG if i get a pair and watch my gps for directions. i thought it would be cool if there were a gps that gave you directions to the cache so you dont need to turn on the light or bother to look at the thing for any reason. just set it to "go" for the coors and listen to the thing. i guess having different tones for the direction you need to go/ the direction. or even better have the thing actually talk, you it tells you got left, you turn and it tells you to go forward XXXFt./ miles whatever. and of course you would also need to able to turn off the voice so it wouldnt get annoying. another benifit is blind people could use this gps for geocaching or even to go to? the store maybe or something... how would a blind person get to the park, i dont know but its an idea....

I wish I had some time off so I could head your way for some skiing.

As has been discussed in numerous other threads, the online logging is half the lifeblood of geocaching.com. Even if you just put a "I found it", "I didn't find it", or "I got stopped on the way and didn't end up getting to the right spot", you'll be helping out *TREMENDOUSLY*. The online logs are what people use to decide whether to go for a cache. They let the hider know that the cache is being found (or not found). They let people who have already found the cache know that people are going to the cache. I've even seen several people go out to check on someone else's cache because they were in the area and some people had logged non-finds. While there's no law forcing you to log online, I would ask you, no implore you, to please take the few moments it takes to log your find online. (It's especially important to me, as it's a 230+ mile trip to check on one of mine, and I'd have to talk J^2's MOM into letting me hijack her husband and their boat to check on another of them... I *KNOW* how valuable online logs are.)

Talk to the land manager, what they don't want is people tromping through certain areas. There are areas that are the home to sensitive or endangered plants or wildlife almost everywhere. I can gaurantee that that this new park has several. Also there will be areas that will be archeologically significant, they definitely don't want anyone going there. Have them recommend areas to place the cache, they should not tell you or show were any of these special places are. They do this to protect these areas. These are some of the primary concerns of these folks.

Funny you should mention "The Dirty Dozen"... I was one of the founders of the Dirty Dozen...for off roaders (Jeeps mostly). One of my intentions is to use the GPS to find offroad trails. I know the Street Pilot is not best suited for offroad...but is was a gift....so I'll make do. Right now...I can't get the thing to recognize the card...so I'll talk to y'all later! Well I'm working on a rather large multicache with a difficulty of 5. I hoped to place it on the 19th of December but I'm behind schedule. I've got all the points picked out, its just a matter of setting it up and printing out the necessary info. That's about it. Hopefully the WEATHER (there's the weather talk for ya) will hold out. sbukosky, selling computers was an example because i couldn't think of anything else at the time. (besides pepl from my area read these forums too.) but it doesn't have to be limited to business. it can be anything in need. just like the fellow that wanted a fake etrex for his son for christmas. that was taken care of over the forums. that type of thing is what i am talking about. lets say you have looked far and wide for hmm . . .purple playdough, and i have some. i could list on the forums that i make purple playdough, or you could post that you need some. the idea is not to limit it to business, but set up a forum (talk to jeremy and have him set up a heading like general) where people can find things that they need.

Sorry if I seemed a little over the top. I do appreciate all the opinions. Negative feedback is probably more important than affirmations. I think we all agree that we need to be very careful and responsible with our actions, public opinion could squish us were the tide to turn. I don't believe that a few, small, well concealed objects are cause for alarm. I do believe that everyone here has the right to remove items outside the cache if they think it's inappropriate. I also believe that those who would rather not find extra-cache objects, have the interest of the hobby at heart. Yeah, I had to talk my wife into an exemption from "The December Rule." (anything you buy for yourself in December has to get a ribbon and wind up under the tree She's a gem. Buying flowers didn't hurt my case any either. I used it to locate and check up on one of my caches this morning and it was a real dream. The user interface has some little quirks that could be made better, but I'm really nit-picking there. It's very responsive and easy to use. I got good sat locks crawling around under heavy, tight tree cover (mangrove swamp and brazillian pepper trees).

Ultimately, I think I was swayed by ClayJar, when he said that he felt better having the larger basemap in case he goes somewhere other than the area in which he has topo's loaded. Has anyone printed out the Meridian users manual? It seems to me it could be printed two to a page, and then two-sided like a book. Is there some way to get my printer to do that? Sponge, did you get any accessories with your Meridian--software, memory, power cords or anything? I haven't seen any talk about Meridian accessories (other than the software.) Jamie
