  1. Talk to the land manager, what they don't want is people tromping through certain areas. There are areas that are the home to sensitive or endangered plants or wildlife almost everywhere. I can gaurantee that that this new park has several. Also there will be areas that will be archeologically significant, they definitely don't want anyone going there. Have them recommend areas to place the cache, they should not tell you or show were any of these special places are. They do this to protect these areas. These are some of the primary concerns of these folks.

    lost

My wife got me a GPS unit the Garmin etrex Venture. I have been trying to figure out how to be able to look at the reading it has and find it on the map. Am use to military way of doing it and have talk to some shops but they were no help. I just want that when my GPS says N38d 47.093 w 104d 53.656 that I can look at my map and say oh there it is. When we go four wheeling I can tell where we are just by the trails and such but this thing is making me more confused the more I try to figure it out. HELP PLEASE. Robert

    Plain Ol' Minnesota

On the main forum menu, I click MIDWEST *every* time to Talk Geocaching in Minnesota (when I should be clicking Great Plains). Having been born here, and lived here my whole 29-year-old life, it's what I'm used to hearing our area referred to. To me, the midwest is at least Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, plus the other states already listed under midwest. And the "Great Plains" is more those flat states: The Dakotas, Nebraska, etc. That, and the fact that I live right on the border of MN/WI... it would be great if at least these two states were in the same group. We are great here, but I don't know about plain. Brenna Bump On A Log And "those flat states" was a joke

    Geocaching?

Funny you should mention "The Dirty Dozen"... I was one of the founders of the Dirty Dozen...for off roaders (Jeeps mostly). One of my intentions is to use the GPS to find offroad trails. I know the Street Pilot is not best suited for offroad...but is was a gift....so I'll make do. Right now...I can't get the thing to recognize the card...so I'll talk to y'all later! Your response made me feel as though I already knew you from that group...it seemed almost eery....are you a jeeper? ------------------ - TJ

    No new posts!?!

Well I'm working on a rather large multicache with a difficulty of 5. I hoped to place it on the 19th of December but I'm behind schedule. I've got all the points picked out, its just a matter of setting it up and printing out the necessary info. That's about it. Hopefully the WEATHER (there's the weather talk for ya) will hold out. So someone will actually come to it. ------------------ "...Not all those who wander are lost..."

    No new posts!?!

Come on guys! There have been no posts to this thread since Dec 8! Surely (Don't call me Shirley...) we have something to talk about with this spring weather we've been having! (Oh no, not another "How's the weather discussion"). But seriously... Anyone out there doing anything interesting? I'm working on a Huge cache right now, trying to find someplace to hide it. Might make it a two parter. Find the first cache (mini) clues to the second one, etc. I would also like to put together a meet & great over this winter. Hope I get some interest!

    helping everyone

sbukosky, selling computers was an example because i couldn't think of anything else at the time. (besides pepl from my area read these forums too.) but it doesn't have to be limited to business. it can be anything in need. just like the fellow that wanted a fake etrex for his son for christmas. that was taken care of over the forums. that type of thing is what i am talking about. lets say you have looked far and wide for hmm . . .purple playdough, and i have some. i could list on the forums that i make purple playdough, or you could post that you need some. the idea is not to limit it to business, but set up a forum (talk to jeremy and have him set up a heading like general) where people can find things that they need.

    Taunting

Sorry if I seemed a little over the top. I do appreciate all the opinions. Negative feedback is probably more important than affirmations. I think we all agree that we need to be very careful and responsible with our actions, public opinion could squish us were the tide to turn. I don't believe that a few, small, well concealed objects are cause for alarm. I do believe that everyone here has the right to remove items outside the cache if they think it's inappropriate. I also believe that those who would rather not find extra-cache objects, have the interest of the hobby at heart. [fauna talk] Either I was confused with flora, or Sigmund Freud is telling me to explore a new fetish.

    High Altitude Cache

quote:Originally posted by navdog:Yeah! I think the highest point in Louisiana is 100 feet? Hmmm..all this mountain climbing talk makes me wonder what is the LOWEST cache . On land, that is, don't want to buy scuba gear. Maybe I'll put one in Death Valley. Gus Morrow Oceanside, CA
  13. Yeah, I had to talk my wife into an exemption from "The December Rule." (anything you buy for yourself in December has to get a ribbon and wind up under the tree She's a gem. Buying flowers didn't hurt my case any either. I used it to locate and check up on one of my caches this morning and it was a real dream. The user interface has some little quirks that could be made better, but I'm really nit-picking there. It's very responsive and easy to use. I got good sat locks crawling around under heavy, tight tree cover (mangrove swamp and brazillian pepper trees).

  15. I-Sponge, Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it. I'm waiting for my gold in the mail. I ordered it Friday... That was six days ago, from cyber-marine. Hopefully, it will be here today. I struggled between the base Meridian and the Gold. Ultimately, I think I was swayed by ClayJar, when he said that he felt better having the larger basemap in case he goes somewhere other than the area in which he has topo's loaded. Has anyone printed out the Meridian users manual? It seems to me it could be printed two to a page, and then two-sided like a book. Is there some way to get my printer to do that? Sponge, did you get any accessories with your Meridian--software, memory, power cords or anything? I haven't seen any talk about Meridian accessories (other than the software.) Jamie

  17. Ttepee: You never talk to your friends about geocaching anymore I did a barrel roll of a chuckle when I read that. I can see it on people's faces, sort of like having a brother-in-law who sells Amway and won't for the love of God shut up about it. I have a mental checklist of who I've introduced to the hobby, and who will soon be developing facial ticks* were I to utter anything even remotely related. People have joked about needing a 12 step program, maybe we could trim it down to three or four steps, print it out, and hide it somewhere in an ammo box out in the woods.... never mind. *at least the facial variety don't carry lyme disease. ClayJar: you have a separate account for geocaching-related e-mail How about registering a domain for this purpose? I still can't believe I was able to nab cachestash.com. Choberiba

  19. *You run a zip code search once a week because your pretty confident that nothing has slipped by you. *All your friend's, family's homes have been zip code searched and plotted and have definite holding patterns for visitation. *You store cache items in your car, home, office, person....hell.. your idea of cache items takes on a whole new light. What started off with junk draw, became dollar store, flea market.. right up to what I don't need or want but someone must. *At Christmas time your stocking stuffers are confused for cache items....and you start looking in your caching bag to stuff the stocking. *You look forward to seeing what kinds of Stuff you get for Christmas that you might not want so that you can offer some cool cache items. Returning??.. what's that? back to the stores?? Forget AbouT IT! *You have more information then the Welcome Wagon when new cachers move to the area *my favorite... Rereading logs...I love reading everyones reaction to the placement and once someone visits I reread the whole page... sheesh.. at least 3 times I'd say.. kinda makes me feel like I was out there again with them but getting a different perspective. **You never talk to your friends about geocaching anymore... yeah I'm there too... for the most part... but when I come up with something cool I tell em about it and update along the way... I'm thinking about hang'n a map at work and flag'n the path of Old Bet's travels....my first travel bug I sent along that's done well in her travels and brought up enough area history that people seem to have somewhat of an interest as to what happens to her. Otherwise I think they think I'm just nuts with my caching obsession

  21. *You run a zip code search every day at geocaching.com to see if there are any new caches in your area. *You mark/capture the coordinates of all your favorite hangouts, just so you can know their coordinates (not like you'll ever use them or anything). *You look up zip codes of places you go on vacation because you've already found the ones close to home. *You store cache items in your car "just in case." *you no longer talk to your friends about geocaching -- none of them will allow it. *You plan your entire vacation around Geocaching. *Your dog is no longer excited to jump into the car with you. *...or when your caching paraphernalia pile gets bigger than your computer paraphernalia pile. *you spend hours thinking up things for this thread *And of course, when your 5 year old knows how to read your GPS, "Mom, we're 154 feet!" *Your husband catches you in front of the computer at 5am and says "Geez, now you need a morning fix?" and you reply, "No, it's not like that! Really!" ...but it is. *You go to geocaching.com and position your mouse pointer on the link you want - before the page is drawn. *And friends who cant read a GPS display just arent as good of friends anymore... *If you have to bribe your 4 year old with McDonalds in order to get her to go treasure hunting with you! *You plan your vacation around how many caches are in an area. *You check for new caches in your area before you check your e-mail. If you see one, what e-mail? *Your kids wonder where all their stuff went. LMAO...I own every one of these!
  22. AAGH! And I just place my order for some last week...! Talk about bad timing. BG
  23. Magellan 315:no map, good antenna(have one and works under trees no problem) etrex:no map, not as good antenna but will work still under trees (meant for hiking) lowrance:has map (very basic, but there), good antenna I was looking at these three for potential purchase. You will find that lowrance is a marine gps which will work for everything. ie: it has marine points of interest on basemap. highways and major roads too! Magellan and Garmin are much more widely used by people. But whenever I talk to someone about the lowrance they say it is "easy to use, and works great". I think they reatil about 200 USD. Adam
  24. Gizmo dave..Kinda speaks for itself..If you can think it up...We can build it. www.gizmodave.com talk to Ideology, EMBI, Team Chaos, Moun10bike, gnbrotz, or Jeremy
  25. Hey folks, I remember some discussion about this before but I don't remember if there was a resolution. When clicking on the "Topozone" maps (which are in NAD27) it seems to me that the link on the GeoCaching site is transmitting the decimal format coordinates, but in WGS84 format. I clicked on the "convert to NAD27" link, and saw on one of the new caches that this was the case. I then punched in the NAD27 coordinates on the topozone URL, and sure enough the little pointer doohickey moved. I remember there was some talk that the site code may be changed so that on those URLS the reference datum would be converted... whats the status? Am I misunderstanding? If its not already been done, I could write a .dll ASP class could be used by Jeremy to do the conversion.
