  1. This is like a tax debate but.. if you lower your cost of yearly admission you will explode you contributing members.

    Why not try and see.

Ten bucks membership will eventually explode the numbers and partisanship,

    It just the facts,,

More members, more bandwidth, more cost for Groundspeak. Anyone that can't afford 8.2 cents a day for membership can't afford a GPS

  2. What software or program is recommended to show my stats and the counties of a state I've found caches in? I want all the other stuff too but one I stumbled upon says I have to have 200(almost there). And I want to do the South Florida challenge, but I've been trying to manually keep up with the counties and it's difficult at best. I've seen some high # of found cachers with some neat stats in their profile. If anyone could share, that would be awesome. thanks!

CacheStats is a good one, it's the one I use.

  3. The way I do it is to bookmark the caches I want to do for each location, then when you look at your bookmarks over towards the right you will see some choices you can click on, one of then being "create a pocket query". Once you click on the pocket query make sure you pick a day for it to run and I also give each one a name. The last I knew as long as there is less then 500 caches in the PQ it will be emailed to you, otherwise you will be notified that it is ready and you will have to go the website and download it. You will get the PQ as a GPX file and I use EasyGPS to load them into my GPS. I'm not familiar with your GPS so I hope this works for you.

  4. Hi I have a location that list the following as it's location:

    GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):

39.55139, -88.62222 How do I convert this to the format my Garmin GPS uses Nxx°xx.xxx Wxx°xx.xxx.

Is this 39.55139 degrees and seconds?

If you want to do it on a calculator everything is based on 60 so with 39.555139 you would multiply the .555139 by 60, giving you 33.308 rounded off to three places. Then add that to the 39 giving you 39° 33.308. To change it the other way divide the 33.308 by 60.

  5. Recently a series came out near me where there were 10 caches in a row along

    a rural road.

The first person on the scene got 8 of the FTFs and missed the last two only because someone

had started at the other end.

I love a good competition for FTFs, but (I don't know, Jerry!) sometimes I think

they are FTF hogs and should let someone else find at least a FEW of the 10.

I see where a person is SO happy to get their first FTF - it's heartwarming

to see the joy they experience. So, when someone takes all 10 of a new series,

I think it's unsportsmanlike and inconsiderate. Am I wrong here?

I'll take a FTF if I get it but don't think it's that big of deal. We have people around here that will go out in their PJs at 10:30 at night in a rain storm to get a FTF. Personally I think they're nuts, but to each their own.

  6. I'm sorry to post that my Garmin etrex died a watery death this week. I really can't complain since it did give me 7 good years of service. In fact I was surprised at my failure to rescue my dear companion since I have been able to do so in the past. Perhaps that was the problem: one too many dives. But life goes on and now I must find a new trail partner. Am getting by with cellphone app but seriously, how do folks live without a dedicated GPSr? I do a lot of trail caching and quite a bit of 5 terrains from my kayak and other types of boats. I'm looking for suggestions here from other water addicted cachers. Are there any units out there that are holding up well to the ocassional tip over and sudden rains? Looking to spend 300-400.

I have a older 76CSx that is waterproof and will also float if dropped in the water. The newer version of mine would be the 78 series but I'm not sure if they kept the same specs or not, I've never took a close look at them.

  7. I received my email on new caches last week and with GC3WNTX: Beer Cave, when I go to look at it, it comes up as unpublished. On rare occasions I've had this happen before and I don't think it's a problem on my end but I'm wondering what someone else gets when they search for the GC number.

  8. Hi all,

I'm still relatively new to the scene, and have found that when I loaded my last caches from GSAK to my 60Cx, it shows the cache name, not the GC code. I'm unable to find, or change these to the GC code, so cannot log my visit.

Any pointers on what I've done wrong, and how to change these? I am unable to go directly to the cache on here by clicking the link in GSAK, as it shows file not found.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Use EasyGPS, it's easier to setup to show the name instead of the GC number.

  9. In my opinion (and apparently the opinion of some others), Garmin's 60x series were the zenith of performance, simplicity, and durability. I've owned various Garmin models since 1995, including some of the contemporary models, and have not found any that can outperform the 60x series where it counts for me: accuracy.

This is something that has puzzled me for quite sometime. Everyone raves about the 60CSx but you never hear much about the 76CSx which I have. According to Garmin it uses the same engine as the 60, is as accurate and as sensitive, has marine features, doesn't have the clunky antenna sticking up, and floats if dropped in the water.

  10. Hello:

    A cacher suggested parking at N 41º 14.65 W 111º 55.95 It seems like I'm missing the last digit. How would these coordinates be different from N 41º 14.650 W 111º 55.950?

    Thank you for your help.

    TheRhythmClan

No difference, .65 is the same as .650 you don't need the last zero. The only difference between the two is .65 would be pronounced 65 hundredths of a degree and .650 would be pronounced 650 thousands of a degree. Mathematically they would be the same.

  11. So I have been out of the Geocaching thing for awhile, and just started to get back in. Been using my Galaxy Epic Touch 4g recently, and am amazed at how easy it is now to cache with smartphones. But, I miss the battery life of a dedicated unit. I have a Lowrance iFinder that still works great, but would like to upgrade. Are the new units more accurate than my Lowrance? What about the battery life with the color screens? Thanks for any help!

    Jive

I won't be much help as far as the new paperless units go, but I do have an iFinder Hunt and a Garmin 76CSx which has the color screen. I would say the 76 is a little more accurate then the Hunt, especially with repeatability. As far as battery life I have yet to go through a pair of rechargeables in a day of caching. The battery life within reason is a none issue anyway because I always carry six spare batteries in my caching bag.

  12. I wonder which chipset you will get, Sirf or MK? Did you do the recommended leave the unit on with a view of the sky for several minutes? I think it resets the almanac.

I don't know how to tell what chipset this one is. If somebody explains how to find out before I send the thing back I will post the info here. I left it on outside in clear view of the sky for over an hour and that didn't help.

    Menu-Menu-Setup-System-Menu-Software Version says:

    Software Version 4.20

    GPS SW Version 2.90s

When it loses its firmware, it will say:

    Software Version 4.20

    GPS SW Version 0.00

Garmin's webupdater will fix it, but the problem returns. I never had this problem with my old unit. That one failed in a different manner.

Garmin used the SiRF set until 2009, after that they went to the MK chipset. I don't know what they did when they refurbished them.
