  1. I agree that the chances of being attacked by a bear are fairly remote, but that's no reason to not take precautions. Interesting statistics on the bears in B.C. http://www.mala.bc.ca/www/discover/rmot/project.htm quote:In the sixteen-year period from 1978 to 1994, eleven people were killed and almost 100 people injured by bears in B.C. While the risk of being killed or injured is very low, public safety is a critical issue in B.C. (Anon., 1996). These statistics are current to the end of 1994. However, in 1995 and in 1996 to date, the incidence of bear attacks on humans in B.C. has taken a marked increase. Many people outdoors carry items "just in case": Water - in case they get thirsty food - in case they need to eat Matches - in case they need a fire First aid kit - in case they need to administer ermegency medical attention Rope - a zillion handy uses Knife - in case they need to cut something cell phone - to call for help Radio - to call for help A GPS - in case they get lost A _________ (you fill in the blanks) in case you get attacked by _________ ... ------- -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  2. I just came up with a new signature item that I have placed in the last few caches I've found/hid. It's a combination compass, magnifying glass, and map reader ... all encased in a leather sheath. Here is a pic of the compass at a cache I found last week. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  3. quote:Originally posted by Johnnyvegas:Wholesale, What about buying them on a Pro-form, there even cheaper. You may be right ... But ... the Pro Forms I'm familiar with usually link you to a retailer that is selling at an advertised "wholesaler" or discount price. True Wholesale is the dealer price. If the dealers are selling them cheaper than they can buy them, more power to them. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  4. I higly recommend Flitz Polish or Metal Glo. Both work well and won't damage the surface. I use it often, and buy it by the case! One tube will probably last most folks years. For an extra bright shine that leaves a protective coating, try some Jeweler's Rouge. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  5. Great Pics y'all! I've got new wallpaper again! -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  6. I use WAAS. I usually get 12-14 hours of use from 2 AA batteries -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  7. I don't suppose I'm "loyal" to either one. I use a Magellan SporTrak Pro. The reason I use Magellan is that I can buy Magellan products wholesale. So the $$ figure was what made the decision for me. So far, I love the little Maggie Pro. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  8. Sounds good to me! -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  9. How many of you use the pictures you take while geocaching as wallpaper for your computer desktop? It seems like I change my 'puter wallpaper every week. It's a good way to remind me of where I'd like to be ... even when I can't. Here's a pic I took last weekend while tracking down American Eagle & Lady Liberty's cache "Rock On". Got a nice geocaching pic to share? Post a link to it here! I can always use new decorations for my 'puter. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  10. I think I fixed 'em ... try again -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  11. UMC, I don't have a pic of that cache stone. I do have a couple of another one like it. The one in the picture is hidden in the woods. Top view of "Rock" Back side of rock and cache container Hope the pics work. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  12. Friday, I was driving by a cache that I have placed in a local park. I noticed that they were mowing the grass, so I figured I better go check on the cache and see if it had been damaged. The cache is one of my homemade "rocks". It's about the same size as a football. (just a little flatter) Well ... as I approached the area of the cache, I saw a man with a weedeater buzzing around right where the "rock" should be! UH-OH ... as I got closer I noticed he was VERY close to the cache. REAL CLOSE !!He was trimming around it with the weedeater! Just like it was a real rock! I just waved and walked on by. I've had a few compliments on the "rock", but this was unbelievable! I'd say it passed the Camo Test! I went back later and looked the cache over. The weedeater had chipped some paint off, and knocked a small chunk of the "rock" off. I'll give it a quick paint "touch-up" tomorrow and it should be good as new! -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  13. Next time lay your GPS down beside the rattler, that way we'll have something to compare it's size too! He did look kinda skinny, (although no less dangerous than a big 'un) the timber rattlers around here sometimes get as thick as a man's forearm. One 'bout nailed my wife last year while picking huckleberries. Never rattled either, she just happened to look down and saw it coiled to strike. She politely stepped back! I think she covered about 10 feet in that step. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  14. I don't have a huge number of caches out ....yet. Only 8 so far. But "Honeychile" has approved them with no problems. Usually in less than 24 hours. Considering the amount of prospective new caches each week, I think that's outstanding! -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  15. Kinda gives new meaning to the NJ State motto ... "Liberty and Prosperity" You would think that the localities would encourage visitors and tourism, rather than exclude them. All of our local parks are open to everyone, and tourists are welcome. We've got a sign at our town limits that encourages folks to come back to visit again.... "Y'all come back!" Of course we're just ignorant Hillbillies, what do we know. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  16. I'll second Opey One's vote for scalded lettuce and onions! Especially when served with a big fried catfish fillet! Other local favorites are Biscuits & Gravy (of course), Fried chicken, Ramps, October beans & cornbread, Crawdads (that's crayfish to some of y'all), Tomato Preserves, Peanut Butter Pie, Apple Butter, Sweet Ice Tea, and last but not least ... the food that Virginia is world famous for .... Virginia Smoked Ham, nobody does it better! oops ... almost forgot, We're kinda famous for our corn too. In liquid distilled form. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  17. By the way ... Team 360 ... Those Glocks are available in camo too! Camo Glock -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  18. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:OK, who buys these and why? ... unless you are a member of a Special Ops, or Ranger unit, why would you buy a camo unit? I would imagine that they were made to appeal to folks that hunt. I know ... deer are colorblind. However; Turkeys have exceptional color vision. *Side note* If you want to make your GPSr easy to find, place a small piece of reflectorized tape on each side. Shows up well in the day, and even better at night. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Matt1344:I, for one, support the current trend away from virtuals. I think they're lame. With a virtual you generally have to do little more than arrive at the destination. You usually don't have to really look hard to find the proof of visit clue. Many you don't even need a GPS to do. I look at it this way: If all you had to do to log a traditional cache was show up in the general vincinity then caching wouldn't be very much fun. How often have you been right on top of a cache according to your GPS but still struggled to find the hide? That's a big part of the fun of geocaching. Virtuals, generally, don't offer that thrill. I've actually done one virtual that was so lame I didn't even have to get out of the car. Besides, with virtuals you don't get all the cool broken McToys . . . I believe that all caches have their own specific merits. I enjoy traditional caches the most, but I can also see and understand the value of Virtual Caches. It's true, many virtual caches can be found without leaving your car. While that may be lame to some, I'm sure it's appreciated by our Handicapped Geocachers. They may be a minority in the Geocaching Community, but are just as important to the sport as the person that hunts the 4/4's. Virtuals do have their place in geocaching. If you don't like 'em ... don't hunt 'em. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.

  22. Thanks for the link! I've seen these from time to time, but just by accident. Now I have a database to check 'em out. Cool site, and thanks again for the info! -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  23. I also grew up hunting, and always seemed to be able to return to camp by an almost direct route, even though my route in, may have been winding around. I don't really know how to explain it but it works. Maybe it's the minerals in our local water ... or ... Maybe it's just some kind of DNA make-up, linking me with Homo Erectus. When I was younger I did a lot of 'coon huntin' at night. We would run the ridges chasing the dawgs for several miles sometimes. Often in unfamiliar places. We always made it back without a GPS. Of course now that I have a GPS, I use it to mark my hunting stand sites, and the boundries of our property so that I can transfer the waypoints to a topo map. This way my "out of state" hunting buddy, will have an easy way to navigate our property when he comes to hunt. -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
  24. Opey, we're from the same neck o' the woods and apparently have almost identical taste in music. This list could be long! Classic Rock is my favorite. Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top has to be at the top of my list. Other favorites (in no particular order).... Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, The Eagles, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Marshall Tucker, Jethro Tull, Van Halen, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Foreigner, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Foghat, Doobie Brothers, Ozzy, Sabbath, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Bob Seger, Doors, Kansas, Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dire Straights, Boston, and Styx... etc. Some songs that come to mind to get me in "Cache mode"? ... "Ramblin' Man" , "Carry on my Wayward Son", "Walk this Way", "Flirtin' with Disaster", "Fire on the Mountain", "Call me the Breeze", "Run Through the Jungle", "Spirit of the Wild", and of course ... "Free Bird"! Of course, like you, my roots are in the Bluegrass Music of our beloved Appalachians. Some of my favorite bluegrass ...Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys, Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, Seldom Scene, Flatt & Scruggs, Big Country, The Osborne Brothers, and some local artists ... Fescue, Konnarock Critters, The McKinnons, and Wayne Henderson. Funny you should mention Ralph Stanley. About 15 years ago, (when I was in Law Enforcement) I stopped his bus for speeding near Wytheville VA. It was about 2 or 3am and they were heading home from a performance. I let them go with a warning. I also like classical music. "Flight of the Valkeries" by Wagner comes to mind as an excellent tune to get pumped up on, for a day of caching. Basically, I enjoy most kinds of music. I just never have aquired the taste for "Rap". -------------- Changing some folks mind, is like trying to herd cats.
