  1. I log in to geocaching.com then want to access the community forums I am required to log into Groundspeak.

Or, I log in to Groundspeak and decide to go to geocaching.com, I am required to log in.

I have to be missing something...

    Thanks for your reply

  2. I have no plans to get rid of my mine. It'll get you down the trail.

One trick under heavy tree cover. Walk about 100 feet away. get a good lock, then walk steady towards ground zero. Note the line where the arrow is pointing. Then walk 100 feet way again and approach at a different angle. Again note where the arrow is pointing. The place where those lines intersect is where you should start looking.

Thank you for the tip. I sure have a lot to learn

  3. Hello All,

I've been lurking here off and on since 2007. Back then, I obtained an eTrex Legend and was wondering if it would be worth the effort for locating caches?

    Thanks for your replies,

    Ol' .Man

I still use my Legend with no problems. It's a great little GPS as long as you don't care about paperless caching. I've since combined my Legend and my smart phone so I can have the best of both worlds.

My phone isn't all that bright, so I'll just have to wing it till I gain more experience.

  5. Update: I thank all you gentlemen for your patience in trying to get me up and running, but, alas, nothing worked. So, I gave in and called Garmin once more and connected with a support person that is going to repair it under warranty since it has been an ongoing problem.

  6. I've noticed a fair number of threads in the Units and Software forum lately that are asking primarily about car nav units, GPS phones and PDAs. My guess (and its only that) is that folks get these devices, get online to learn more, stumble upon geocaching in general, or this forum in particular, and jump in. Caching has nothing to do with their presence here (not that there's anything wrong with that). It made me curious, though.

How many of you were cachers first, who came to the forum to get some help using your unit to cache? How many of you were hardware owners looking for help who just happened to find this site through the net? And of the latter group, how many have since said, "Hey, this geocaching thing is pretty cool. I may give it a try"?

Guilty as charged... all except the caching part...

  7. I know, I know... I'm a day late and dollar short, but I've come to my wits end... (or half of it). 2005, I received an etrex legend. Whenever I turn it on, it comes up with my name, address, etc, along with "No Base Map". I have scoured the net, tried to contact the company, asked owners, all to no avail. I get frustrated and put it away only to get it out again to start over. I was told I could d/l maps but when I try they tell me my model does not support transfers... please help... I only have so many hairs left

    Is it a blue Legend?

If so, I'd guess there is a failed detailed map upload somewhere in there. I'd snag a free Garmin compatible map and try again to upload it.

Or reflash the firmware. Or do a reset on it.

Yes, it is a blue legend. How go about doing any or all the above. I am a complete Garmin greenhorn...

  8. I have the Legend (ole blue). So, in case I missed a point, yes, it does come with a basemap. Just to make double-sure, does your unit look like this:

    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=173#

And, yes, you can load maps into it. It does have only 8mb internal memory, so you can't load a lot, but you can load. If you click the Maps link on garmin.com and select the various Mapsource products, they all list the Legend as compatible. I have loaded Topo USA maps onto my Legend.

I believe you can't wipe out the basemap by loading Mapsource maps. However, you can wipe out the marine POI database by loading maps. They provide a download to reload the marine POI database if you decide to erase the mapsource maps later.

You might try running this marine POI download to see if it restores your functionality.

Also, the latest firmware version 3.70. Be sure to install this, too.

That's the one. It came with 3 CD's. I must be doing something wrong. I have the latest firmware. I'd like to see a map, any map... all I get is an arrow on a blank screen. I'll try that marine POI, thanks.
