  1. Would, and actually did. Twice. Long story. I'd be interested in hearing it. I'd love to share, but I'm right in the middle of negotiating a pretty substantial deal with a well known publisher, and my lawyers are advising to stay quiet.
  2. Would be nice, but no. Geocaching.com is no longer accepting new listings for caches.
  3. I like an occasional . I haven't given up on Challenges, and I've been a fan (and a frequent critic) of Waymarking since the beginning, and I'm still an active participant. Over the years I've followed these "Bring back virtuals!" threads closely. But after all this time (and really, I've given this some thought), I can't think of a single practical, rational reason why Groundspeak would even consider making any more attempts to reintroduce the concept of virtual caches into its listing service. Face it: geocaching.com functions quite successfully without allowing new listings. I get that some people want to experience the Return of the Virtual Cache - I really do. But after everything that has transpired over the last 7 years or so, what possible motivation would Groundspeak have for trying this again? Nothing that has been attempted has even come close to dousing the pitchfork fires, despite (at least, in my opinion) some legitimate attempts to in some way reincarnate the original (but unsustainable) concept. For anyone who seriously wants Groundspeak to once again allow the listing of caches of the type I suggest that you present a logical argument based on the value it brings to Groundspeak, Inc. That might get some attention. "Because people want this and Groundspeak should listen to it's paying customers!" has merit. "Because people don't want this and Groundspeak should listen to it's paying customers!" has equal merit. My eyesight isn't as good as it used to be, but as hard as I stare at the horizon, I'm just not seeing a tipping point that brings new to the geocaching.com web site. I'd love to see my Waymarks on a tab on my GC.com account, though.
  4. According to the linked reddit comments that picture was taken in the Palatinate Forest in Germany. The person who posted the picture said that he/she has notified the authorities and provided them with coordinates.
  5. Did you sign the physical log without getting blown to smithereens? If so, I think you should go ahead and post a Found It log on the cache page. On the other hand, if you were blown to smithereens before you had a chance to sign, I think you should just log a DNF. Or maybe a note, if you think that would be more appropriate.
  6. Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the cache pages, eleven, eleven, eleven and... Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most geocache ratings go up to ten? Nigel Tufnel: Exactly. Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better? Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be rating their geocache as a ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your cache listing. Where can you go from there? Where? Marty DiBergi: I don't know. Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? Marty DiBergi: Put the cache rating up to eleven. Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One better. Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten better and make ten be the top number and make that a little better? Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
  7. As long as I maintain my Platinum Membership, I am guaranteed to never suddenly lose my Premium Membership. I don't know what happens if I suddenly lose my Platinum Membership. But I do know that some people find the Platinum Membership joke to be outdated, annoying, and trite. Fortunately, as long as I maintain my Platinum Membership, I am guaranteed not to care about what those people think.
  8. These are the Geocaching Forums. In here, everything is a problem.
  9. Regardless of what happened, this was clearly not a good PR day for geocaching in general. But I don't think we have enough information to know if this situation is truly the result of the grievous actions of one or more overly aggressive FTF hounds, or simply an unfortunate perfect storm of circumstances. I am familiar with a number of state parks where you can quite legally and legitimately access the park without passing through the main "Pay Here and Pick Up Your Park Brochure" gates. Somebody who received notification of new caches (due to an unintentional early release of the cache publications), who normally and naturally would gain access to the park through such entrances, could easily innocently ruin the special day that the event organizers (who could not have thought through every conceivable scenario) envisioned when they wrote up and submitted the caches. I'm not saying that is what happened - I'm saying that such a situation is completely possible. And without more details, I'm going to withhold judgement until we know more.
  10. Alternatively, you could just move the cache so that it is closer to the published coordinates.
  11. Being stealthy is easy. This is my third post in this topic, and most of you won't be able to find the other two.
  12. I can tell you where you can get 1941 tax maps for Hopewell Township, NJ! Finding maps like these can be a challenge. Some (not all) cities, towns, and counties make property or tax maps available on-line, but there's no standard pattern that I've found for finding them. I just usually Google the city/town name along with "tax maps" (or something similar) and try to find a web site that seems to be somehow officially associated with the the city/town (rather than something that looks like a realtor site or an aggregator site).
  13. I had carefully overlaid tax maps onto the Google satellite view of the area and had myself convinced that the cache was right in the middle of somebody's private property. And then I realized the Hopewell Township tax maps I was using were from 1941. Cool place for a cache - hope you get it all worked out.
  14. Glad to hear that. Care to share? As near as I can tell, an archived cache is locked to editing. You can only edit it if it is unarchived. I would surmise that a reviewer, froglet or lackey could edit it for you. I noticed this on an EarthCache on which I requested NA. Interesting area, but it was a landfill, and the cache had nothing to do with earth sciences. "Why is there a tree growing here?" "Because the bulldozers piled the fill higher here?" It was archived for a fair while, whilst the owner tried to make it more relevant to earth sciences. But to work on the page, the CO had to unarchive it, then archive it again. Not sure that the new cache page is moe relevant to earth science (Something to do with the soil. Yeah. That came from the excavations from the building of the Interstate through the mountain. Wow! But not relevant to the question asked.) You can't edit the page but you can still add logs and new waypoints. Care to share further? Why would you want to add logs and new waypoints to an archived cache listing?
  15. You were soooo close to circling the right answer!
  16. Off Topic forum. Without being a premium member for at least a moment, the Off Topic forum is a fairy tale: a rumor, a story, a whisper, a phantom breeze carried on the wind by others, just out of reach, forever to be sought, but never to be seen. Off Topic forum? What's that? Does anything interesting or fun go on there, or is it just a bunch of political arguments? Who knows?

  18. We'll have to keep an eye on that one! On the other hand, Dingo and Ringo and Wingo all seem to be hanging in there.
  19. You may not make an account for a dog. But if a dog wants to make an account for him/her self, that's ok, as long as the dog is over 18 (in dog years). Speaking of dogs, I miss puppymonster. On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog
  20. That may have sufficed it for you, but for the rest of us ... what are you talking about?
  21. Sorry to hear this, briansnat. I (and many others) know how much you contribute to geocaching and these forums. It sucks that people you help can't find the time to thank you. The fact that you keep contributing anyway speaks volumes about your character.
  22. Assuming the highway crew did this, I believe the problem will go away when they do. I don't know if it's the highway crew that is doing this, but I don't think the highway crew is going to go away until the highway goes away. And I don't see that happening anytime soon. I love the history, I love the story, and I envy those who were able to experience the real Mingo. But Mingo is dead. Long live Mingo.
