  1. To me, classic + nano would mean magnetic.
  2. Yes - I have seen codes that contain lots of ones and zeros and spaces between the groupings of ones and zeros. I'm not kidding. I really have. Hope that helps.
  3. You should have received it already. You might want to send an email to contact@geocaching.com - they should (eventually) be able to assign the souvenir to your account. Out of curiosity, when you logged your Leap Day find did do the logging directly on the web site, or through an app? And did you do the actual logging on the 29th itself, or on the day after?
  4. What did the cache owner do that was illegal? I'm sorry, I meant the cache searcher (finder). Thanks. I thought I was missing something. Solar flares and a full moon can do that to a person.
  5. Unless there is a web site out there somewhere that allows people to publish coordinates of places where they have wrapped a "spiritual message of goodwill" in a PVC pipe and placed it in a tree, I don't think so. If someone finds such a web site, can you post a link? I'd like to see how that works.
  6. No. It wouldn't be right to pass my sickness on to other geocachers by leaving icky germs all over the log book and the inside of the ammo can.
  7. One day I realized that I was better off ignoring everything in the cache except the log book and visiting trackables. Since that day, I have found geocaching to be much more enjoyable.
  8. The first LPC I found was in Nevada, in July of 2003, but I remember hearing about them earlier than that. I'm sure there are older LPCs, but the cache I found had been placed in January (2003).
  9. Welcome to Geocaching! It's pretty standard practice for people who return to find a cache after previously logging a DNF to add a new "Found it" log and leave the original DNF log alone. With regard to your question about stats: the standard Geocaching.com statistics do not account for DNFs, so you won't see "75% found" when you log a DNF on one of four caches whether you change a prior DNF to a Found it later or not.
  10. In order: The Earth cools People show up, or evolve from other creatures, depending on your particular set of beliefs The concept of hiding stuff, then locating and retrieving it later, is invented The ammunition box is created Then Tupperware Rockets and satellites happen The Internet is developed Personal computers arrive British engineer and computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee writes a proposal for what would eventually become the World Wide Web Jeremy has a Eureka moment Ten already! Dang it - I've got, like, seventeen more to go.
  11. He could have. But he didn't. Not having seen your note, I can't speak to the appropriateness of the cache owners response. Cache owners are allowed to (or are supposed to) delete any logs that "appear to be bogus, counterfeit, off-topic or otherwise inappropriate". There are different ways to pass along information in cache logs. Sometimes a more subtle wording can make a big difference. In any case, as a cache owner, I don't think I'd be very receptive to a suggestion to move my cache to a new location. After all, I picked the current location for my own reasons. The fact that you didn't actually find the cache may be playing a role here as well - sometimes people end up searching in the wrong location, and so their logs don't necessarily offer a true reflection of the cache.
  12. There is definitely a place in this game for the higher D/T caches, and there are those in your area (or from outside your area) who will seek them out. Having said that, the "worth it" value of such caches will depend entirely on the caches themselves, not the D/T rating. Creating a needle-in-a-haystack D5 is easy, but people may not find the effort worth it if the cache offers nothing beyond a high difficulty rating. With respect to your question regarding searches by D/T: PQs allow you to filter based on difficulty and terrain.
  13. You are deliberately hiding the fact that an on-site egg hunt will be required to find the log once the cache itself is located. I assume your motivation for the lack of disclosure is to treat finders to a kind of surprise when they find the cache and realize there is a bit more work to be done after they have the cache in their hands. I don't have a problem with that. In fact, it sounds kind of fun to me. But if I was to place such a cache, and if I was going for the surprise element you seem to be, I would have left very specific and obvious instructions on, or in, the cache itself regarding the need to hunt through the eggs to find the one that contains the log. I would never have left a subtle reference for the post-find log hunt in the hint. With the exception of puzzle caches, I don't care for hints whose purpose is anything other than helping a cache seeker locate the cache container itself once in the vicinity of the cache.
  14. Did you try asking the cache owner for an additional hint?
  15. True, if it were a photograph with nuances of color and tone AND if the jpeg compression were turned on, but it is highly unlikely that the photo format would make any difference on something like these documents. Resolution would be the main contributing factor here, even if the jpeg compression were full-blown. That's wrong. JPEG compression is designed to be used with photos-- images with nuances of color and tone . It is able to reduce such photos down to a few megabytes with little visible compression artifacts. JPEG doesn't work so well with screenshots or logos, which is why PNG is preferred for them. You are so wrong. Go read up on lossy compression and come back to me when you understand it. And the gloves are off!
  16. Geocaching in the snow is a way of life in my area. In the winter, anyway.
  17. A better approach might be to gather suggestions as to how certain changes to the listing guidelines could possibly improve the urban geocaching experience. Nobody likes to be the recipient of "a lot of complaints". Personally, I think the guidelines are fine.
  18. New to geocaching and the forums, STUNNED by something you found on the Internet, emotional opening post about a well known (to these forums) high-octane issue, quick stop-by-later-post to say you won't say more about it. Got it! Drew you out of OT for 2 posts, didn't it? Did not! This one makes 3.

  20. One time I checked into a hotel, and when I was settling into my room, I noticed an unusual box. The box was tucked neatly away, kind of hidden, under a counter. I looked at the box as I unpacked my suitcase. "Why would there be such a box in a hotel room?" I wondered. But I didn't touch it. At first, I distracted myself by trying to figure out which switches ran which lights. Then I poked through the dresser drawers, and removed the pen and tiny pad from the desk (I put these in my luggage). I flipped through the desk binder, looking at the listings for local dining establishments and dry cleaners and churches. But soon my curiosity got the best of me, and I approached the box. It looked like it had a handle! So I grasped the handle, and pulled. To my surprise, a light came on inside, and I could see that the box was filled with treasure! Cans of refreshing beverages! Little tiny cans of soda, bubbly water, beer, wine and even Champagne! And cheese! And meat! And candy! And other things I didn't recognize. Such a wonderful gift! I threw myself into this magical and mysterious surprise like there was no tomorrow. Many days later, a charge for these items showed up on my credit card bill. Turns out I had been the victim of some sort of hotel "mini-bar" scam. The bottom line: don't touch anything in a hotel room that you didn't bring yourself.
