I use Nuvi_GPX_V3.gsk to send caches and Lab caches to my driveSmart65.  The only issue is that I can't persuade the DriveSmart to appear as a drive, so I tell POILoader to send the gpi file to disk and then manually copy it to the DriveSmart.  Like others have said, I ise the DriveSmart to navigate to a parking spot near the cache then use my hand-held (E-Trex 32x) to get to the actual cache.

    Hiya Gill & Tony..

Does is show icons for geocaches on screen while driving - or do you have to select it first, then tap "Go" to start navigation to it??

  2. So, I got a couple of macros from Wadcutter ("garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk" written by from Pilotsnipes and I used many, many years ago and another "GarminPOI_gpx.gsk" written by Christian Caron (alias "cron") - thanks!

The first - displayed errors when starting that warned of -slow- running as a result.  That was no lie. It hadn't made it 50% through a 15k cache file in over 20 minutes!  I aborted that run.  Wadcutter also mentioned that there were intermittent issues loading more than only 100 caches (but he did offer a work-around).

The second - ran and transferred but I didn't see caches displayed on the Drivesmart 65.  I'm not even sure they all transferred.  Without an icon on screen - this doesn't really work for me.  Ugh.

Which bring me back to a -variation- of my original question.. does anyone have a way to load a large list of PQs (GPX files downloaded from PQs and using GSAK to load and then run a macro; or generating a "List" and then the "Send to Garmin") on a Drive Assist 65 - or even an old-school Nuvi 765, 50LM, etc.?

Garmin (and Geocaching.com?) has done the community a disservice with their -poor- job of documenting which devices are supported, how each can be used and the method of transfer.  I wont even get into the icon sizes and color depth supported.  Its hard to believe that Garmin now expects people to use a hand held GPS to navigate from "point A" to "point B" (the geocache) while in a car when an automotive GPS sits on the dash basically unusable.  That, is simply a MASSIVE FAIL (it's is a great way to push people to geocache on their cell phones though)!

Anyway - thanks to everyone that has answered.  The ability to show a geocache icon enroute to *anywhere* or while the GPS is just displaying the road I'm on (and surrounding area) is the BARE minimum of what I'm looking for.  An audible proximity notification, cache description, 5 recent-most logs, hints (etc. a la paperless geocaching) would be welcomed additions.

  3. Thanks for these options.  I used to use a Nuvi 760 in my car and 60CSx to get to the last legs of the cache.  With the use of GSAK, a macro etc., I got great icons, descriptions and audible notifications on my Nuvi (and all but audible alerts on the CSX).  I received none of these on my Drivesmart - though I could see them listed when I scrolled down the screen to "custom"  screen and could go to them.  I never knew if I was driving by one  during normal driving.

Can these macros display display ~10k caches (plus child points, parking, trail heads, etc.)?  Still need 24x24 / 256 color RGB icons?  Use PQs?   Use POILoader or Garmin Express for transfer?

I cant wait to try these out to work with my Drivesmart65  :-)

    Thanks!

  4. I know that the Proximity Icon was not visible on mine until I started loading custom POIs. I never had the issues you are describing with my device. I suggest that you verify that you're using the recommended version of Garmin's POI Loader software and make sure that you've got the latest firmware for your 265T. Other than that, maybe it is an issue with the POIs you are loading. Perhaps loading just one PQ instead of a large number of them, may allow the unit to perform as expected. If it works, add additional PQs to the mix one at a time to see which one is "breaking" it. Then, it may be possible to analyze the troublesome PQ to further isolate the issue.

    Good luck!

On the 265T, the Proximity icon isn't there permanently. It only shows up when there are Custom POI's loaded. For some reason, if I select Tourguide (Radius) in the macro, the Proximity icon isn't created. If I select Proximity (On Route) in the macro, the icon IS created but it seems to alert randomly (maybe I'm missing something) and unticking the checkbox doesn't shut off the alerts anyway.

I guess another question would be why doesn't the Tourguide selection create a working Proximity alerts icon in the settings screen.

    Thanks for your help.

  5. Randy -

I have the '760. Like you, sometimes I don't want to hear the alerts. On my GPS (probably yours, too) there is a "Settings" screen or "Wrench" icon. After selecting it, I can choose a "Proximity" icon. This is the area to choose how alerts are delivered. The selections presented on this screen are "Auto Play" for playing alerts normally, "Off" for no alert, and finally "Prompted" I haven't tried this choice as the other two fit my needs.

I'm using a Nuvi 265T with the simplest set up. All I need is found and unfound folders. It's working nicely by loading everything on a memory card.

My question is this. There are times when I need to disable the alerts. Since I have to use the Tourguide setting, I don't get the Proximity icon to turn them off. I tried using the proximity (on route) setting but that was confusing and setting it not to alert didn't even work.

Is loading everything on the card and pulling the card the only way to do disable the alerts?

    Thanks

    Randy

Am I the only one that is concerned only with the VALID caches in the vicinity of my route? If it is archived or unavailable, a single, readily identifiable icon is what is important to me as I'm driving. This one icon will convey what I need to know so that I don't have to stop / slow to get off a road, etc. because there is nothing to be found there.

    <snip>

Deselect the archived/unavailable flag to prevent display of invalid caches in the vicinity of your route.

    j

Yes, that is doable. I can make all of this go away by tinkering around in the poi loader directory - when I remember to it. Many times, my route is at night so caching then is a problem - but I see the cache on my GPS each time I go by. Having an unavailable / archived cache icon is nice for the times when driving a familiar route and thinking to myself "wasn't there a cache around here somewhere?" So, when the opportunity arises during the day to check out a cache, I'll try to do that. The same thing happens when we're with friends and we're using pocket queries of the same area that were compiled at different times.

No biggie though. Apparently I'm the only one that sees any value in this, and I can tweak it with a few added steps when I remember. If you'll consider adding the ability of "making all the icons user selectable" to the end of any "feature request" list, that would be great. If it never happens, well, that's ok too. I am most grateful for the work that has brought this macro to life, never-mind the dozens of updates you've provided since then.

Would it be possible to remove the few remaining seemingly hard-coded 16x16 icons from the script? It looks like nearly all the other icons are user selectable - except for a few unavailable / archived types. I have tried everything to keep them from appearing in the directory, but they keep overwriting my 24x24 styles.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Deleting or renaming the TourGuide_Tools folder should be the only thing that causes an unzip of the built-in symbols.

Let's figure out what is happening and fix it as new users are expecting to see the symbols based on the intro to this thread, I don't see their removal as a good option.....

    j

Ok - "removal" was a poor term to use. I my mind, I wondered if it would it be possible to to make the icon(s) user defined - like the others in the custom page?

Is there a need for unique icons to represent "traditional unavailable", "mystery unavailable", "xyz unavailable", and so on? I would think a single icon graphic could be assigned to all of these - I mean, if a cache is unavailable or even archived for that matter, do we really need to know what type it was?? Am I the only one that is concerned only with the VALID caches in the vicinity of my route? If it is archived or unavailable, a single, readily identifiable icon is what is important to me as I'm driving. This one icon will convey what I need to know so that I don't have to stop / slow to get off a road, etc. because there is nothing to be found there. It has happened to me more than once.

Maybe I'm just doing something different than everyone else - I don't know. I have used a large red "X" to represent any cache that is no longer "findable" and the traditional "open treasure chest" for any cache I have found. How do others do this?

    Thanks,

    Steve

  9. Been using this for a couple weeks now and I love it. I have a question that I tried to solve but haven't figured it out on my own. On my nuvi, the geocache names all end with "name". Is there something I can do to fix this?

    You can try these ideas:

Check the first page of the macro - "Garmin GPX POI Export" page - change the third box on the left to display your particular model GPS. If all ready set correctly, look on the "Advanced Options" page - at the top, the first option "Geocache Name Format" should read:

%ShortName=14/%typ=3/%found/%code%bug=* (which is the default for my nuvi 760 anyway)

If all else fails, stop GSAK, delete the macro and the TourGuide_Tools directory inside GSAK and reinstall. Make sure to set the option mentioned above.

    Good luck!

  10. Bear with me as I'm learning the ropes of MediaFire. I have already uploaded the 24x24 icon set to MediaFire, and have since created an easier URL from which to get them:

    http://www.mediafire.com/24xGeocachingIcons

Since MediaFire will not display .BMP files, I have created .jpg format versions of the icons to help you decide if want to download the set. Unfortunately, MediaFire flags identical sized files as duplicates. Since these icons are are pretty close in size, some will not be stored on their server for viewing. I am working with the MediaFire tech support folks to resolve this, but as of yet, it still remains a problem. Consequently, not all icons are available for display. The icon collection in the zip file however, is complete and is under 50kb in size, making it a quick download over even dial up connections. There are no .exe, .bat, .com or any other file type that could host a virus - only a few dozen 2kb .bmp icon files.

  11. The link below are the 24x24 icons I use on my nuvi 760 and 60Csx. I have collected and / or edited icons found on the internet for my use. All have transparent backgrounds. To the best of my knowledge, none are protected by copyright. Please feel free to use / edit as you see fit. The nuvi icons are named for use with jjreds macro (look at them before replacing those supplied) and the 60C icons are named for use with javapgmgr's macro (again, look at them before replacing those supplied) "Nuvi60CsxGarminCsvPoiExport.gsk". Of course, you can use icons from either set - just rename as needed.

  12. Firstly - thanks for your efforts constantly tweaking this macro.

    You're welcome

I've replaced all the icons with 24x24 pixel types - they're great for nearly instant identification while driving (and for my 50 year old eyes). I'd be happy to send my 24x24 pixel icons (on transparent backgrounds) to anyone that asks - just provide an email address that will accept a zipped attachment about 50kb in size. If you (or someone you know) has a Garmin 60C, ask for those icons too.

You could create an account @ MediaFire or similar and then post a link......

    http://www.mediafire.com/

It would be wonderful if the archived / unavailable cache types were assigned a simple icon (user selectable would be perfect). The current method indicates the cache type icon regardless if the status is available or not. I doubt anyone really cares if an unavailable cache is a Multi, Mystery, CITO, etc. I know that seeing an "X" (or other user selected) icon instead of a "valid" cache icon would save quite a bit on my car's brake pads ;-)

That used to be the case and got missed during an upgrade. Now fixed in v7.3.4

What is the difference between the "Other" cache and the slice and dice "Other" cache?

There is an "Other" cache type and "Other" container size. Slice and Dice only works for the "Traditional" type.

Can you please add an entry in the macro for the "Not Chosen" cache type ?

For now "Not Chosen" will use the same symbol as "Other" starting w/ v7.3.4

Thank you, thank you and thank you!
